Randazzo from PMDG on demand for P3D products

I’m happy with P3D v5 and would buy more airports if being able to find highly rated ones or v5 only was made easier.

For example, let’s look at SimMarket. I select P3D from the top line and then select v5 Scenery. I’m presented with 673 products. How many? 673??? All compatible with v5? Hmmm. 🤔

But then you start scrolling through the products and find many are compatible with FSX. But that’s a 32-bit sim with a 4Gb VAS limit so the scenery was designed for FSX and all the developer has done is adapt the installer. It won’t include advanced features made possible by the move to 64-bit.

That’s not what I want. I want airports designed for v5 only and preferably with decent customer reviews. But SimMarket doesn’t give me that filter so trying to find what I’m looking for is nigh impossible.

They really need to look at their website and include a sort option by price, rating or v5 only. It can’t be difficult and would help many I’m sure.

This is what most developers have been doing over the last 10 years. All they are doing is just making their products "compatible" with the newest versions of P3D. They don't want to spend a "couple of days" by making use of the new features of the platform and are just dragging the horse around on a bullock cart. Of course I can understand people have a life as well and this might not be their main source of income and there might be several factors behind this, but if you are going to start ignoring your creations, then people will also start ignoring you.

I totally know that there is a new product in the market but how stable is that platform? Multiple issues are coming up after every update. I even know that it is in early stages and it will take another year or maybe 2 to call it a "stable platform". Not to forget the horrendous install process which is a nightmare in case you want to re-install your sim.

I am not bashing on MSFS, I love flying in it and I use it for mostly VR GA flying, which is what its best for! But there's multiple issues with the sim and I am sure those won't be fixed overnight.

In the end what matters is what product you make regardless of what sim it is. If the product is good, it will sell no doubt.

Of course, what really drives the market is price, and the bigger volume of potential sales of MSFS over P3D is driving the price downwards too. Having said that. I still use X-Plane more than I do P3D or MSFS2020. It might change when the NG is released. Only time will tell.

I have no issue with those developers who just wish to keep their FSX airports compatible with P3Dv5. All I require from Simmarket is a way to filter them out.

That’s not relevant to my point. We’re all aware of MSFS but my point is about how online ‘shops’ can make it easier for me to find what I’m looking for quickly. The SimMarket site really needs an overhaul.

Yes, I think that the number of products available at SimMarket these days has overwhelmed the format of the original site. I agree that it could do with an upgrade.

There's a difference, though. FSX was a direct sequel to FS9 and had everything that FS9 had and more. P3D was a direct(ish) sequel to FSX and had everything(ish) that FSX had and more. MSFS is not a direct sequel to either, though of course it has FSX bones, but it does not have everything that FSX had and more, or that P3D has and more. It has a lot of new, revolutionary stuff, but it is severely lacking in many other areas that every other major sim platform has. Die-hard P3D users are not yet resisting the inevitable obsolescence of their platform for a shiny new one waiting in the wings that can completely replace it, as FSX could for FS9, because it cannot. I have no tribal loyalty to P3D - if MSFS completely suited my use-case then I would drop P3D tomorrow. But it doesn't, and I have no guarantee - none at all - that it ever will. So people like me are getting gradually squeezed out, and I'm annoyed enough about it to have an occasional moan on the forums. I might even be annoyed enough to move to X-Plane 12, at this rate!

I suspect in case of PMDG, price is a big factor. I had to buy the 777 for P3D ( even if I already bought it for FSX, but zero upgrade price ), and I used it for exactly 20 minutes, which is the time I need to create a GSX profile for it, so I had to remember how expensive it is, for a product that has been released years ago.

Its crazy to me that developers cannot get a copy from another developer, PMDG in this case, to work on their addons.

I always got free copies of airplanes whenever I asked, and I always give free copies of GSX to any airplane or scenery developer that ever asked to develop some integration with it. It's just that, with PMDG, I prefer to buy, my decision.

This is the answer from SimMarket...

”most products are compatible with several flight simulators. if you browse the P3D5 category only products that will work with this sim will be displayed. it is not possible to filter only P3D5 native product in the shop, we do not know ourselves which are. when using P3D5 as search query in P3D5 scenery there will be less produts shown but it is still not possibe to determine wether they are native or not.

Sample P3Dv5 search

best regards

The solution, it would appear, is to enter P3Dv5 into the top search bar.

There is an advanced search option. Tap the magnifying glass to display it. That helps a lot.

I would have to say it's really difficult to get a good measure whether or not P3D numbers are really down.  When is the last time any new products were made for P3Dv5?  For PMDG to say that sales are this and that is fine, but wouldn't sales decline because everyone has already purchased your stuff?  IT would be interesting to compare a brand new product, say a 757, offer it in both platforms, and see what the sales figures tell you.  I guarantee, P3D sales would be at least 40% of total sales.  To compare sales of a new platform for basically a new product, vs an older platform with product the public has purchased for the last 5 years is not really reliable.  They are free to do what they want, but until Lockheed says they are done developing P3D, there will be a lot of simmers still using the product.

System: P3D v5.3HF2 , Intel i9-9900K o/c to 5.1Ghz, Nvidia ASUSGeForce RTX RTX 3090 24GB,  MPG Z390 Gamng Edge mobo, 64Gb G.Skill DDR4 3600Mhz RAM, Win 11 Pro 64-bit

Completely different.

People stayed on FS9 for performance issues (among other things) but FSX had all the core competencies of FS9.

The reason people are (at least for now) staying on P3D is because of several missing key features in MSFS.
