July 26, 20223 yr https://www.space.com/china-long-march-rocket-uncontrolled-reentry-wentian Quote No one yet knows where the massive booster will come down after launching a new space station module Sunday (July 24). China has once again opted to let a huge rocket stage fall back to Earth on its own. The decision, the third time the country has opted not to control the disposal of the first stage of the Long March 5B rocket, once again puts China under scrutiny from space debris trackers after similar uncontrolled falls in 2020 and 2021. Jonathan McDowell, an experienced tracker of these events at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, said U.S. Space Command orbital data is showing the 21-ton stage floating on its own. Unbelievable! Some are saying that it looks like the rocket was never designed for controlled re-entry. Just let it fall back to Earth and hope it lands in the ocean seems to be the philosophy. There could be sections as big as 20 -30 metres long surviving and hitting land or ocean. 11:18 in video

July 26, 20223 yr Author The stage is 21 tons. Nobody is saying the risk to life is large, just that its irresponsible. Bear in mind there will be 10 of these launches. In 2020, the re-entry damaged buildings. Quote Many scientists agree with China that the odds of debris causing serious damage are tiny. An article published in the journal Nature Astronomy this month put the chance that, under current launch practices, someone would die or be injured from parts of a rocket making an uncontrolled reentry at 1 in 10 over the next decade. But many believe launch designs like the Long March 5B’s are an unnecessary risk. “Launch providers have access to technologies and mission designs today that could eliminate the need for most uncontrolled re-entries,” the authors wrote. They proposed global safety standards mandating controlled reentry. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/07/25/china-launches-rocket-space-station-tiangong/ Edited July 26, 20223 yr by martin-w

July 26, 20223 yr Looks like China is refusing to update its rockets to 21st century standards, probably arguing that they're safe enough as it is and it would cost too much or require retraining of its technicians. Now, what does that remind me of? 😊

July 27, 20223 yr Well, except the very OP SpaceX, literally all rockets like Delta, Atlas etc did this, NASA and USAF frequently waive ODMSPs for that juicy extra performance. And even the 2nd stage of Falcon 9 would have fail to do so and ended burning up just above US continental last year.
July 27, 20223 yr Global irresponsibility to earth and humankind...it sadly seems to be a sign of the times.

Oh yes, It used to be done routinely at one time. The point is that the space industry is now more responsible in this respect. Quote Ever since large chunks of the NASA space station Skylab fell from orbit in July 1979 and landed in Australia, most countries have sought to avoid such uncontrolled re-entries through their spacecraft design, McDowell said. https://thenewdaily.com.au/news/2021/05/10/nasa-china-rocket/ Quote And even the 2nd stage of Falcon 9 would have fail to do so and ended burning up just above US continental last year. That was a malfunction though, not deliberate. Predicted that 20 to 40% will survive and hit the ground or ocean. Will land somewhere here... Edited July 27, 20223 yr by martin-w
