From what I've gathered it was the least efficient in regards to costs-revenue-per-pax, if that is what you mean by "performance". The "best", most efficient version is usually the original one, because it is being planned with that in mind from the beginning. Stretched or downsized versions are usually less efficient, it's the same in the A320 family (though the A321XLR might upset this formula in an exiciting way!)

I know this formula very well. The 736 sure is probably the least efficient narrowbody. And, actually the most efficient version is always the largest one (see table on page 2 here https://airinsight.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/airwaysnews02052016.pdf). 

But, with performance I mean flight performance. Take off performance, climb performance, thrust/weight related things...

I once discussed about airplanes with a real world ATC specialist. He asked me, whether I knew which aircraft had the best climb performance, I said I only know that the A343 has the worst one (it climbs only due to earth curvature), so he said nothing but just wrote these characters on a paper: ... 737

Yes, I've always heard 757-200's were rocketships.

I wonder if the old Convair 880/990's were fast on climbout.  I know they had high cruise speeds.

The A310 with its tiny wings might not be a great glider but it climbed like a rocket with those overpowered engines.

Not always. A stretch has more seats. So cost is spread over more paying pax. Hence why you see so many orders for stretch aircraft.

I flew short haul British Airways on a 757-200 out of Heathrow many years ago (to Paris of Frankfurt, can't remember).
The plane was about half full.  The climb-out angle was the steepest I have ever experienced, and not by a small margin. 
I was suitably impressed!  other people on the plane were laughing at the angle of the climb-out - some of them a bit nervously!  :laugh:

The 757 was an amazing plane.  It will be an instant buy for me when PMDG release it, especially after experiencing their 737's in the sim now - I am absolutely loving them!
There might be still a few things to fix and features to add, but they have done a good job in general, and the release price of the 600 is amazing for what you get.

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

I suspect that the comment about performance was related to "power to weight" ratio rather than anything to do with costs.

Though 737s and 736s in particular have less demanding runway length requirements (= they require less runway). Thrust to weight is also almost the same.

I spent countless hours in the cockpit of Icelandair 757s and on climbout they were a sight to see. The crews loved them for getting in and out of terrain and above weather quickly. They sometimes referred to themselves as shuttle pilots 🙂

I know a lot of cargo carriers have been using 757-200's in Central & South America because of that...they can get in and out of terrain areas in a hurry.  I think they used to use a lot of 727's with the SP? (Special Performance) kit back in the 80's and 90's, but I'd be willing to be the 752's can out-do them.

They just all need RATO.  🏁 😄
