Getting CTD recently more often

I would exclude add-ons and consider only the CTDs that occur with vanilla sim (empty community folder).

Is this a "vanilla" sim, or should the tester also uninstall/delete all the content added by world updates and purchases made at the Marketplace, none of which are to be found in the Community folder?
If so, virtually no one is going to be found using the "vanilla" sim, as released on 18th August 2020 and to test that and find it to be stable would help almost no one as well.
An assumption made that nothing in the Official folder can possibly cause a problem seems to be a flawed one.
Some of the "hand-crafted" airports for example, can stall even the most powerful of systems.

No, only the community folder. This is my personal opinion:

  • Whatever is developed by Asobo (World Updates, default aircraft, default instruments) is considered vanilla MSFS and 100% under their responsibility.
  • For whatever is sold on the marketplace it's Asobo/Microsoft responsibility to ensure compatibility.
  • As for other add-ons (ORBX, PMDG, free stuff on flightsim.to etc.) the responsibility is of the developer.

Absolutely, but the question remains, regardless of who bears responsibility,
how and why are added items from the "Official" sources deemed to be exempt from causing CTDs?
Many of us are not interested in assigning blame.
We are, I think, all very interested in achieving a flight simulator that will run consistently.

Never had a crash in two years, started crashing like crazy since 20th of August without changing anything hardware or software, reported the issue on MSFS forums: apparently it's my fault according to Asobo. Worst customer service ever.

Marketplace add-ons can also cause CTDs. An add-on is and add-on, whether it's an MSFS marketplace add-on, or an add-on in your Community folder.

I had a marketplace airport add-on that caused MSFS to freeze on the loading screen after SU 5.  It took months for it to get fixed.

Indeed. I couldn't care less if the CTDs were caused by Asobo, an addon or my neighbour's microwave. Just want a sim where I can complete a flight on the runway and not on the desktop 🙂

My best chance at present of avoiding a CTD is turn off my trackIR and look forward only avoiding looking around, and turn off live weather.

Hmm, might want to rephrase that as most flights that end on a runway look like this:

To me it's a streaming problem.  The stream stops for an instant, no data comes through, so the sim crashes.  On watching streamed movies on TV, when this happens the screen gets pixelated and after a short period the movie continues.  The sim can't do this so it crashes.

i posted a possible fix that has worked for me but no one has responded to it.  When I get a CTD the first indication of it is the screen freezes, then after a couple of seconds it crashes.  What I have been able to do is when it freezes, immediately hit the ESC key.  It goes back to the main menu.  Then after about a minute i hit RESUME and everything is fine.  I have done this several times and haven't had a CTD.  I believe the ESC out gives the streaming a chance to catch up loading the data.

To me this is a streaming problem, and a new way of using this service, so it hasn't been perfected yet.

On a further note, I lost my internet connection yesterday.  I received a text from Spectrum that the internet was down and they were working on it.  This indicates to me that they have been having problems, so this may be part of the problem we are haviing.

I noticed the same. There's a little freeze moments before MSFS crashes. However in my case it's too quick... I cannot press any keys

I have been getting a lot of audio squawks and squelches lately as well.  Sometimes just before I lose the sim, I get a squelch.

I've had the screen freezing a few times recently, but then the sim locks up completely so no chance to enter the menu. These seems to have disappeared. Normally I get the error message "memory could not be read". Your fix could be relevant for others though, it's worth a try.

Just got another one about 10 minutes after taking off from Anchorage in the 414. The sunset was lovely though, so I guess it was not all in vain 🤷‍♂️
