A few years ago I wrote an app to handle texture conversion of all sorts of files for Prepar3D AI traffic.  The other day I came across this thread and have updated the app I wrote to support MSFS AI

  • If I can figure out a way to optimise these textures easily with a batch command with free software, I'll share it here for everyone to follow..

  • Hi All, I've just published a new version (1.3) of my Texture Optimizer tool.  This version addresses several issues in 1.2 and adds a bunch of new optional parameters that allow you to fine-tune

I have some black liverys e.g. AUA A320. The Tail looks normal the rest of the AI Plane is black.

Every texture file which is black is transparent .

No problem here with AUA A320. Check your log inside the optimized airplanes folder. Does it say "LOADED VIA COMPRESSONATOR - (542)"? Probably your Compressonator installation wasn't detected.

@MammyJammy You should have 6699 files in your texture folder and 3277 folders, the same as the original installation, see below for optimised folder sizes...

I have 6700 files.

Edit: Sorry, it's 6699 because the other file is the Texture optimizer log.

Well, after a day's journey into the even deeper depths of DXT formats and selectable block compression, I have a new version of the Texture Optimizer that is handling all the textures that received an Unloadable Texture warning.  It requires the installation of another piece of software as many of the new DXT compression formats require GPU texture projection, and I'm not about to dive into that world.

Results are pretty good.  I've checked for the color profile and black image artifacts from a few of the specific textures mentioned here, and so far so good.  There's still a few things to fix up, but overall it's working well and AI traffic looks good.  Here's where my FSLTL base install is now landing:

Please UNINSTALL version 1.1 of the Texture Optimizer from your Control Panel, then hit up the revised installation and user guide for a new 1.2 version.

Enjoy.

Thanks for doing this! Running it now.

I installed FSLTL last week.  File counts are the same (the one additional file is the log generated by the Texture Optimizer).

All good MammyJammy. I see that you are talking about the entire installation size. I was just referring to the SimObjects folder.

@MammyJammy

Many thanks for this super tool - I got now all textures converted to 1024 px and working nicely!

What do you think about the effects folder? I shrunk the textures from 1024 down to 256 and added mipmaps using ordenador. If you could add size options 512 and 256 to your tool, it would be perfect.

It would be good if the authors of FSLTL at the first place could downsample their textures, would save them tons of download traffic too.

No I got this issue before optimizing the textures aswell. Only those airplanes with a transparent in the textute files are black. With AIG I do not have those issues

The black texture issue is caused by a bad conversion using other tools. The default FSLTL textures don't have that issue and if you convert them with the tool posted by MammyJammy you shouldn't have that issue also.

Right, I reinstalled FSLTL and did the texture optimizing again - now it works!

This is exactly what I got. Worked perfectly. You are the man!

Is there a way to download the complete optimized file without going through the manipulations via the software? Example flightsim.to ? I'm not very comfortable with these things

There's some other "undocumented" features embedded in it, such as texture conversion from source (like DXT3 to DXT5) as well as forced creation of mipmaps for DXT1/3 files without them.  If some of you give this tool a try and have feedback, I'll look at some updates that are useful to the community.

https://izn-flightsim.s3.amazonaws.com/textureoptimizer.html

@MammyJammy I just ran the 1.2 beta version of your tool on the default FSLTL textures, following your instructions here.

While the textures have all resized, you have not given instructions on how to add mipmaps.

I now have a folder of correctly optimised and resized textures but I also have 602 textures without mipmaps.

I can apply these myself, using Ordenador for example, but it would be important to mention this to everyone who thinks they have 'fully optimised' textures by following your current set of instructions.

The textures need to be mipmapped to be fully optimised.

Would you be happy to share the CMD line 'undocumented' features you mentioned so that everyone can take full advantage of your conversion tool and have resized AND mipmapped textures?

Thank you for sharing this tool with the community, it is much needed.
Toby

PS I feel like a mipmap evangelist. Michael would be proud. 👼
