MSFS INTEL vs AMD

Featured Replies

I ran Intel stuff for many years until my son turned me on to the 5900x which I am currently running.

Seems my previous Intel builds always required overclocking and generated too much heat and fan noise.

Not so with the 5900x which runs MSFS straight out of the box cool and quiet - no muss no fuss.

Note, I''m not talking about AMD GPUs which have suffered due to bad drivers in the past but things may be changing there also.

Is there an AMD system coming for Intel users?

Beyond that the XBOX is AMD so won't that suggest going AMD?

Finally, FSX always prefered INTEL but that may no longer be the case with MSFS.

The 5800X3d is actually faster than the 5900x and is a drop-in replacement on your motherboard.

Otherwise, you have to wait for the 7800X3d which will probably release in Q1 2023. That will require buying a new motherboard and RAM as well.

I think flight sim people use what gives us the best results in flight sim.   I don't think there is an "Intel vs. AMD" here.

Definitely take a look at the X3D chips coming soon from AMD. I was running a 5950X and switched it out for a 5800X3D. There was a significant improvement in MSFS performance. The 7800X3D chips should be coming soon.

Hence the questions in my post.

I was Intel for two decades and just switched to AMD 7950X…

What are your impressions? Is it cost competitive?  Perfomance?

I was also intel for a couple decades.  Which makes me sound more loyal than I am.  To me a CPU is silicon in a silver box.  Not one of those products I get too loyal about.

Good point but what about results?

Yeah I totally like the results.  I'm happy with my switch to AMD.  But next build I could be right back to intel.  We shall see.

Great that's what my post is about.

I switched to AMD before MSFS came out. The hope was that the socket would last much longer since AMD doesn't change the build from generation. So you can just stick a new generation of CPU into your old motherboards. whereas you would always need to change it when upgrading to the next Intel generation.

Unfortunately the new generation of AMD went away from that concept and the motherboard that I bought in good faith to last me another 6 years until I upgrade to a newer CPU will be incompatible.

But fortunately I can still get quite a boost by upgrading to the 5800X3D at some point, considering it dropped quite a bit in price since the 7xxx CPU's are out.

MB changes always require a system change decision.  What prompts that change and at what cost?

Like many I reserve comment with an AMD preference.

Same, but I'm on 5800X3D and this thing rocks.

I would have probably gone with AMD last time I upgraded, if I knew then what I know now about the 5800X3D.
