DC-3 impressions?

Featured Replies

Hi, what is the difference between the DC-3 and DC-3 enhanced? Yesterday I reinstalled my whole MSFS copy to a larger dedicated SSD drive and saw that the DC-3 with its classic and retrofit panels were installed, however there is an additional 6gb pack DC-3 enhanced not installed in the content manager. Thanks in advance.

Ok found the answer! No need for replies thanks!

A short explanation of the Standard versus Enhanced versions of the DC-3.
Because XBox requires 2k textures (it can't handle 4k very well) we have to employ 3D geometry livery detail and texts and decals overlaying the base texture to get clarity and sharpness. This is most apparent in the cockpit for example.
So, if you don't use the 4k enhanced in PC platform, you may be disappointed with the resolution in the cockpits and in some areas, the exteriors. So we would heartily recommend that you DO NOT uninstall the 4K enhanced version, you will regret it.

After changing this in the flight model.cfg.  I think she's flying purrrity darn good 😉

I gotta regress some of the things I said in this post 😮 .  It does have it's problems spent more time with her (yikes).. Sure some of them sim engineers will get her straightened out though.

The GotFriends 40th Anniversary Expansion Pack changes the flight model on both the Beaver and the DC3. It works on both the enhanced and the non enhanced DC-3.

I am just about ready to consign the DC-3 to the boneyard. In 11 practice landings this afternoon, not once could I keep it on the runway. . I've tried just about everything I can think of in the sensitivity settings for rudder pedals, along with different techniques in flying, and I'm ready to give up.

Rgr on the last ghost rider.  Gonna have to check it out.

This is only the second aircraft to try since the anniversary release. Sounds are pretty cool. Not sure about the engineers decision on the window frame positions! Good bit of elevator trim management to find correct attitude for climb and level flight. Ground rollout on landing was interesting! Can’t imagine flying this beast back in the day. So loud! No noise canceling headphones back in the day! Lots of fun!

I asked for Robert Randazzo's opinion and he kindly offered too try the DC-3 :

Looking forward to read what he has to offer about his RW experience flying is own DC-3, and the model that came with the 40th, by Aeroplane Heaven !

I read into his brief reply that he offered to try the virtual DC3.

Exactly! OFC it'll take it's time because for sure his days are busy, but I look fwd into his analysis.

Robert owns a RW DC-3.

I expect he is one of the few who is qualified to comment on the flightmodel, but it must be a bit awkward for him to comment on a competing company (not that AH is in the same league as PMDG).

It's almost a shame PMDG is not developing a DC-3 themselves. Such a classic deserves a (near) perfect study level version in the sim.

I had a bit of time so I decided to give this AC another final go.  I am not using Mods. Prior to today the Roll out was my problem, a complete disaster with the AC being uncontrollable in any meaningful sense. Ploughed a lot of grass and doughnuts.

With my recent attempt I have modified the payload. Pilot and Co pilot @ 200lbs each. I emptied all other seats except the rear two Rows @ 616lbs each. Plenty of forward trim on take-off. On landing I used full flaps.......and presto, a nice tidy rollout.......well I say tidy, plenty of rudder twitched (must be flicked otherwise it oversteers like crazy) left and right as soon as it deviated, it wandered a bit but I kept it on the centre 3rd of the runway.....that'll do for me.

......still reckon it needs looking at by AH though. My controller will not last long considering the workout the rudder now gets.

Yep, that's been my experience exactly.

I installed the Duckworks mod, along with the developer's flight-model config edit, and they have helped considerably. I also adjusted the load-out to pilot and co-pilot at 80 kg each, with a third crewmember, also 80kg, in the front row of seats, then 120 kg in the rear row of seats ( they each have a 40kg baggage allowance ). The bags at the rear also stop you exceeding the C of G limits when the centre tanks are run down to empty. If you decide to do what I have done, make sure the config edit goes in the Duckworks flight_model.cfg, rather than the default one. You have to do it every time the mod is updated, but it's worth the few minutes needed.
