RTX 4080 - Frame Generation with G-Sync - some advice

Yes I use a EVGA 850w - the 4080 is running cooler than my 1080 to and quieter too.

It's because the cooler is the size of a school bus. As long as you have a case that can fit it, I love having a hugely overkill cooler. Three big fans and my curve never really has them go over like 1600RPM and the card stays in the high 50s low 60s lol.

Same power draw as my old 3080 Ti but look and the difference in cooling real estate.

Yes Stefano. live weather where you are flying at the time, including any changes as you fly.  There is no historic weather yet.

The live weather is not always exactly 100% accurate, but it will be very close - most people don't have a problem with it.
Sometimes the live weather is very bad where you want to fly (High winds or fog) so you have to pick a preset.  Gusts in the mountains and thermals are modelled very well now.

We have to watch not to go too far off-topic, so feel free to make a new thread if you want with any other questions.
I would call it something like 'Going from FSX to MSFS'.
There is also a good 'tips and tricks' section at the top of the forum page.

Thanks Rob you were very kind and extremely helpful, thank you so much!! Yes, you gave me good advice, now I'm considering opening a new post on the transition from fsx to msfs so I don't pollute this topic. Thanks again!! If you happen to be in southern Italy for the holidays, near Polignano, Monopoli that area there, you have beer and pizza paid for by me!!!

Even my 4090 stays cool and quiet, the power draw is much lower than I thought based on the initial discussion of the 40xx cards.

Excellent news! Out of curiosity, which power supply do you use Frank? Since we will practically have the same PC configurato..

However, it seems that the rtx4000 series is very well cooled

Wow, you went heavy on watts, great! Whoever designed my pc said that with 1050 I'll be fine, let's hope he did the calculations right

You will be fine Stefano.  Some people only have 850w power supplies (although good quality ones), and they are doing fine with a new generation processor and a 4000 series card.  Just don't bother with overclocking.  No need to overclock with your setup anyway.

PS.  I have only been to northern Italy (Milan and Merano), but your area on the Adriatic is extremely beautiful.  You are lucky!
If ever I am down that way I will contact you for sure to share a beer and proper Italian pizza!

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Intel 14900K in a Z790 motherboard with water cooling, RTX 4080, 32 GB 6000 CL30 DDR5 RAM, W11 and MSFS on Samsung 980 Pro NVME SSD's.  Core Isolation Off, Game Mode Off.

Just got a 4090. Turned on frame generation in Cyberpunk 2077, out of curiosity more than anything. "Blimey!", I thought. Buttery smooth. Astonishing, really. Tried FS. "This is some kind of voodoo!", I literally said out loud.

Pricey, obviously. But wow. I haven't been this impressed with a graphics card for a long time. Maybe back when I got my first 3dFX card in the 90s.

What kind of monitor are you running?  I seem to be get flickering but I'm wondering if that's because I'm also running a non gsysnc monitor alongside.  I should turn it off and experiment

Not who you asked but I get similar on a 4090 and 5800x3d.  I deleted rolling cache to get rid of most stutters but I do get some screen tearing running a 60hz monitor when I pan to the side.  Debating getting a true gsync monitor but they're so expensive and I just shelled out a ton for this rig.

Yeah they are.  I'm banning myself from spending any more lol!  I've got a 27 in gysnc compatible that can run 144hz.  It's pretty good and the actual flickering in the sim is minor.  I'm going to be honest I'm getting a little confused about all these new terms.  G sync, frame generation, dlss, and what's a good hz setting for my monitor and if I should run vsync in NCP or just set a max rate via NCP (and then what should I set in MSFS if anything).

Yesterday I disabled Gsysnc and it was still extremely smooth in fly Tampa Boston with ai traffic and weather.

When I first got the 4080, before enabling anything, I found the same experience as the OP.  Fps varied wildly and it was pretty much a stutter fest.  Then I enabled Gsysnc/frame gen and TAA in MSFS and it was butter.

But if I tab out of the sim (I run it full screen so I guess I press Windows button and D to show desktop) the screen flashes a lot.  It's annoying.  To make a long post longer I then disabled gsync and that's when I went back into the sim and it was free of flickering but still extremely smooth (and subsequently the desktop and other apps were flicker free).

I assume the flickering is caused by the non true gsysnc monitor but it doesn't always flicker.  So it makes me wonder what is the correct recipe with NCP and in the sim?

Flickering is definitely a thing with G-Sync compatible monitors. Some monitors don't play well with screen overlays so try removing anything like Riva Tuner FPS counters or the Nvidia in-game overlay. The flickering you're likely seeing is LFC (low framerate compensation) kicking in. Basically each monitor has an effective G-Sync range and when your FPS drops below that range it will increase the refresh rate. Different refresh rates have different brightness so if you are hovering right around that cutoff for your monitors G-Synch range it will be bouncing back and forth between say ~50hz and ~144hz and there will be very noticeable flickering.

There are some tweaks you can do using the program Cru to adjust the G-Sync range or refresh rates of your monitor but the only real solution is using a G-Sync specific monitor or G-Sync Ultimate or whatever it is where G-Sync operates at the entire refresh rate range for the monitor.

Personally for my monitor I actually decreased the G-Sync range to 72-144hz so when LFC kicks in it's a less drastic change in refresh rate (smaller fluctuation of brightness) so the flickering is less noticeable, but still there. There are a fair amount of articles on using Cru to tweak for your specific monitor, but it's kind of a pain in the rear to be honest. My next purchase will be a nice G-Sync monitor.

Would a 4080 work with a I7 10700k ot be overkill.

I’m close, i9 10900k, and I’ve seen a great improvement.  Frame generation is worth it alone IMHO on top of the overall performance increases I’ve seen.  I do plan to upgrade my CPU once the dust settles on the AMD CPU releases in the new year, but in the meantime (and even if I wasn’t planning an upgrade) I would have no regrets.

I am running a Samsung Odyssey G9 which has a 5120x1440 resolution. It's only g-sync compatible rather than proper g-sync which means I get a slight flicker under some circumstances in certain games. FS is one of those. I usually notice it against a bright blue sky but generally only momentarily. I didn't notice it being any different with my 4090, for what it's worth.

I love the monitor, particularly the super ultrawide aspect ratio. But I went through years of owning genuine g-sync monitors and I had to get used to g-sync compatibility really not being the same thing at all. I think the G9 Neo has a g-sync module, though, so maybe I'll take a look at that at some point.

Ok fine. Yes, from what I've read too, as you have already kindly told me, several have 850w power supplies and they are fine ... yesterday I was given the new flyer, the trustmaster Boeing pack and I use the old pedal board that I have saitek pro rudder pedal, now the only thing missing is the computer that will arrive between tomorrow and Friday... yes, Rob very gladly!! If you were to come to those areas, more precisely to Puglia, you are welcome!!!

Sounds promising, do you lock fps at 60 or even higher with your new card? I have the same CPU.
