RTX 4080 - Frame Generation with G-Sync - some advice

Featured Replies

Glad to hear the positive results 🙂. The wait to get mine is killing me though, ordered it Nov 19 and BestBuy is still gradually getting around to shipping it to me 😞. That’s probably a rant for a different thread though!

Yes, you should see a benefit regardless of main thread or gpu limited. If gpu limited, the extra rendering performance of the 4080 will give you more frames. If main thread limited, the 4080 frame generation will give you more on screen frames than what the cpu is offering to the gpu so you will benefit either way.

That sounds hopeful, my wish is to be able to run MFSF in Ultra 60 fps, my computer can handle 30 fps Ultra in the toughest conditions today.

You'll see a great benefit, I'm sure of that.
My CPU isn't the fastest in the world either, but I'm seeing literally twice the performance with the 4080 compared to the 3090 with FG on. That's quite shocking.
I set the Max Frame Rate in Nvidia Control Panel to 80 because my old G-Sync monitor, and even though I'm still Main Thread limited, the experience is really smooth. And my video card is just going at 50-60C and 32% fan speed. That's impressive.

It might take a little bit of tweaking and changing settings and experimenting a little. But that's part of the fun too, especially when you get such good results in the end. 🙂

My new system is up and running, the result were better than anticipated, not just in terms of frame rate, but in terms of fluidity as others have remarked. I went from an 10900/rtx3090 system to my new 13900/rtx4090.  My settings are all ultra (or highest allowed) with DLSS quality and  Directx 12beta.

The previous benchmark test for me was simple. Leave my home airport of KEKM in the Steam gauge 172 and fly west over KSBN around 2500 feet.  I would use a preset weather of clear at 2:00 pm.  My frame rates would generally be around 53 frames per second.  Not bad really, and it certainly would go lower with clouds and weather in non benchmarked flights.

Today I simply used live weather and local time around 9:00 am.  I knew I was in for an unbelievable treat when I was laying at 160 frames on the runway, and absolutely no regression from that in the air either using the same flight plan as before, in fact I managed anywhere from 160 to 165 frames in flight with very little deviation.  The panning was completely fluid as well as every other aspect of the flight.

With the new hardware setup and frame rates now tripled from before, I am completely amazed.

If anyone is on the fence over migrating to the newer 40xx series cards, my advice would be to just do it if you can.  The 13900 has a role in this as well as the newer ddr5 memory, so I think this isn’t just the card, but still incredible nevertheless.

That's awesome! Congrats on the new rig.

Yeah I think the 13900K and DDR5 provides a much higher "baseline" performance, in addition to the extremely powerful RTX 4090 is why your performance is tripled, and not "only" doubled.
I also believe the 4090 helps in getting a completely stutter free and fluid experience without having to tweak the system a little and sometimes cap performance like I did with the 4080.
It's an insane leap from one generation to another, at least in the case of Microsoft Flight Simulator.

I'm hoping the 4070 and 4070 ti will provide a big leap with Frame Generation as well. I think a lot of simmers would appreciate that. Even if it provides 50-75% performance increase, that would be substantial enough to warrant an upgrade for many people.

Oh, and RTX 4000 users, remember to push the 16-pin connector all the way in until you hear a soft "click". Then it's going to be fine. 😄

Finally got my 4080 last night, though not from BestBuy…they finally admitted they suck (well not exactly what they said 🙂 ) and gave me a refund for the card they couldn’t ship over a 17 day period so i went to a brick and motor Canada Computers store and bought one.  Only had a bit of time to play last night but happy with initial observations…flying at a smooth 60-70fps over Manhattan is just awesome.

It looks like the Steam FPS counter can pick up frame generation BTW as that number was roughly twice what I was seeing with the dev mode FPS counter and was the same as the nVidia overlay number.

The card size coming from a 2080ti actually wasn’t too much bigger so it all fit in my case.

Overall I’m happy and it will only get better when I do a CPU upgrade in the new year.

The AMD RX 7900 XT and XTX are now launched, and so far they don't seem to do that well in Microsoft Flight Simulator.
The tests from Paul's Hardware shows that in 4K 7900 XT performs around 3080 Ti, and the XTX performs around the 3090 Ti level.
That is in itself good performance, but not compared to the RTX 4000 series.
With DLSS and Frame Generator turned on, the gap becomes even larger.

At lower resolutions the results between the cards become narrower.

(As a side note, the new AMD cards are doing really well in other titles)

From Paul's Hardware, at 13:42 into the video:

I hope the AMD cards do well, so that will hopefully drop the price on the 4xxx's.

Last night I casually looked around and saw 4090's and Virpil bases on backorder.  Ugh.  Everything I want is not available.  Pays to be an early adopter of the 4090 perhaps?  Some of you got 4090's out of that first batch of 120,000 units or so?  I see 4090's on backorder selling for $2,000+ USD.    I think I'll put my money towards a cpu+mb for now.

Yep I hope they do well too, we need competition so badly in the GPU market. The good news is they're performing really well in other titles.
I'm hearing rumors the 4080 will get a price cut in January as well, which would be very welcome.
Now we just need to get the 4070 available, I have a suspicion they will perform great in Flight Simulator with Frame Generation on.

I almost bought a 4090 at the launch as well, I found some that were at the introductory price, but it was so much money so I couldn't afford it. Now they're sold out and prices are up.
But I'm very happy with my 4080.

If I had the PSU and I could have grabbed a 4090 FE I would have.  Technically the FE would work with my psu but it's a bare minimum

Ditto here but at the same time I don’t regret my 4080 purchase.

I just got a 4090 myself for my new build with a 5800x3d. I struggle to maintain 30fps at the heavy addon airports in planes like the pmdg. FSLTL kills me even with limiting the amount of aircraft. Without it I could probably hold it. Very smooth if I vsync it to half my monitors rate which is 30fps but around the airport I just can’t maintain it. Seeing some of these results makes me think something just isn’t right. I’m still main thread limited and even during cruise I’m only getting mid 60s when I disable vsync. This is with Lod set to 200 and object lod 100. Benchmarks are good and I’m not being throttled. Frame generation on but it makes a difference of a few fps at most for me according to the counter in dev mode.

Dev mode doesn't show the correct fps when frame generation is turned on. It will still only show the default fps. You need to use an external fps counter like the Nvidia or MSI one to actually see the correct fps once this mode is turned on.

In any case, it seems like there may also be some other problem if you are seeing such low fps with such a powerful build. I assume your PSU is powerful enough?
