August 16, 200718 yr Well it's installed. I will say that my first impression is, hey, at least it isn't crawling. I fiddled a bit with the graphics and even running at currently low settings, it looks better than FS2004. I was afraid it was going to stutter. I've got some tweaking to do of course, and I guess I better download the patch. Some graphic anomalies to figure out such as, why is my mouse pointer black? and how do I get rid of the menu bar?... but I'm sure I'll figure all that stuff out. My biggest gripe is that it loads so slow but I'm running vista and I'm use to that, haha. I agree I think I will get into the VA community and do some online flying now that I got high speed wireless. Now, where's that darn logitech joystick of mine? Am I sounding enthused yet?Tim
August 16, 200718 yr Hi Tim, I have these sorta moments often too. Maybe it's just because my system doesn't exactly run FSX how I want it to, or I spend too much time tweaking ;). But I think the real reason why I get bored with flight sim is because I really really honestly yearn to be in the air, flying real planes... Flying is too dang $$$ arghhh... now I'm training to be an air traffic controller, so at least I'll get to be near the planes hehe.... Everytime I fly FS, it's usually just some pattern work with the RealAir SF260 or the default C208/Extra while screwing around. I rarely get out the heavies A) because once I get going faster than 200kts my scenery is a blurry mess and :( they aren't very realistic systems-wise...I do like flying the missions, but I already did all of them, and I like the helicopter missions the most, but did them too. I've done a VA, VATSIM as a pilot and controller, LAN multiplayer with friends doing aerobatics, fully planned out a route and used navaids etc with LevelD 767 in FS9, and all the stuff in between. sometimes it just gets old...I suggest you take a months break from it and if you miss it, just go back and fly near your hometown....that's what I do | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |

August 16, 200718 yr Perhaps we're being a little short-sighted. Think about this. FSX has a pretty substantial SDK with a mission development set. You can add any aircraft of your choice and scenery to boot, plus voices, etc. How about a full-blown combat simulation withing FSX. Shoot down aircraft, put bombs on target, do helicopters, and the like - all within the fantastic FSX scenery. You could use the FSX damage function. Hey, I smell an opportunity (money too). This would give a tremenous boost to FSX and give all you thrill seekers out there some amunition (no pun intended). It's a thought.fb

August 17, 200718 yr For my two cents (or whatever its worth), I think the eventual saving grace of flight sim will be to move in the direction of very much higher aircraft realism and interaction as in the example of Digital Aviations awesome Dornier do-27. Flying without any negative consequences for poor piloting technique etc. eventually gets a bit boring.
August 17, 200718 yr TIM...As a "RW" pilot I have to ask. As a "simmer" since 1984 I have to ask...Are you an aviator? Have you flown? Do you really know just how real MSFS, X-Plane, IL-2, Condor, Falcon and all the rest are?You say you are tired. If you are so tired, my suggestion would be to fly a REAL PLANE.Once you have done that...You'll never be bored with the likes of FS, X-Plane, IL-2, etc.You just don't know what you don't know.My Humble Opinion,bt
August 17, 200718 yr Wow, thats a deal.FSX needs recent hardware, if you have that it's very nice IMO.All of us have peaks and valleys of interest, but a new FS version can keep me going for some time, this time it really disappointed me until I finally upgraded my last PC.I sense that FS interest general is fading of late, there has been very little FSX library uploads or even payware releases of late.Maybe the 14.95 low price will spark some more FSX interest. August 17, 200718 yr "1) If you've lost your enthusiasm and you're looking for a miracle to restore it, I don't believe you are going to find it."If I may be so bold, Brian, I beg to differ. When FSX was first announced back in January '06 it wasn't long before I wiped my copy of FS9 off my hard drive ready for what seemed then to be a technical revolution. When FSX was finally released I found that my PC was not up to the level which FSX was pitched at, so I had to make do with what I had until I could afford better hardware.I'm not saying I was particularly dissapointed with the new sim, but I was motivated to spend a little extra to get a really capable rig. I got an AMD 6000+, and a GeForce 8800 GTX which let me set the sliders a fair way to the right with very smooth frame rates. But the really surprising thing I found was that when I reinstalled FS9 I could push all the slider all the way to the right and still get better than 30 FMS in the worst possible situations. And by golly it looks pretty darn good too. I'm rediscovering a lost world with some of the best looking payware I've ever seen!My point is that the real revolution, and the miracle we are all looking for is being performed by the hardware. The software progresses by virtue of developments in the chips and graphics cards, so what we all really want to do is to save those precious pennies, and get a really nice rig.I spent a little extra, yeah, but just look at what it can do:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/176777.jpgThis is FS9, so I hope I'm not out of line posting here in the FSX forum.Mike. August 17, 200718 yr HiWhat sort of set up have you got?Just to say I was disillusioned with FSX for 9 months (bought it on day one-couldn't run it).Whatever the box says about minimum requirements doesn't apply if you are a serious simmer with an older machine.FSX will only run the way it was meant to be on newer systems.Got myself a new PC 2 weeks back and am loving it.Didn't break the bank either! If you can afford it-do the same.Prices have dropped so get a quad core if you can.FSX is great on my new PC.Most problems are fixable.I won't fly FS9 anymore!I think most of the posts in the forums are negative because the happy ones are too busy flying to post their positive experiences.Good luckJay
August 17, 200718 yr > and how do I get rid of the>menu bar?... It's an FSX peculiarity. Just hold down the Alt key for a second or so and the menu bar will disappear.Best regards, Chris
August 17, 200718 yr Hey, it happens.I got my first PC in '87. I have always had a huge interest in aviation and always wanted to be a pilot. I was always on the lookout for a good sim. I was big into FS4/FS95/FS98. I'd started making airports and panels for both and gotten into the community at the new Flightsim.com and Avsim.com. I even bought some aircraft design package to try my hand at aircraft design. I got my pilot's license in '96. With each version, I had to make changes to the stuff I had written. Then FS2000 came out. Plus I was spending a good amount of time flying for real. I just lost interest in going through the whole rigamarole of installing and redoing all the addons all over again. It wasn't till soon after FS9 came out that I got back into using FS again. I don't remember what it was that got me into it, perhaps because I had built a "latest and greatest" PC (not really, but better than I had had before) that I had the horsepower to run it.I think it was the release of Ultimate Terrain and the Dreamfleet Archer that pushed me over the edge and I haven't looked back since. It probably also has to do with the financial constraints that have kept me from flying for real. FS is a little cheaper and I get to fly whatever I want.Sometimes rest is good. Now I'm addicted lol.Thomas[a href=http://www.flyingscool.com] http://www.flyingscool.com/images/Signature.jpg [/a]I like using VC's :-)N15802 KASH '73 Piper Cherokee Challenger 180 Tom Perry
