Some observations on what impacts FPS

Well this post answered my questions. I was super on the fence of going for a 7950X3D and 4090 to upgrade from my 5900X and 3070 Ti but it sounds like I would be pretty disappointed. Frame gen is the only reason I would get a 40 series, but DLSS on Quality with my 3070 Ti looks so bad (esp the gauges) I can't imagine how bad frame gen must be.

I went from I9 10900k + 2080Ti to 7800X3d + 4070Ti and I gained about 25 fps with the same settings, so those fps are not cheep, as said, you can run FG with TAA, but It's like put lipstick on a pig if you already get 40 fps 0,1% low without it, I can't notis any difference between 40 vs 80 fps in the toughest conditions.

A downside I notice with FG is that I cant cap my frames without stuttering problem when panning, so you have to live with that your GPU run at max with high temps and screaming fans, and you need a G-Sync monitor with high refresh rate, at least 144hz since V-Sync does not work (at the moment), not to mention high VRAM usage, so calling it a game changer is an overstatement, I gave it up an run my sim smooth locked at 48 fps Ultra in DX-11 and I'm very happy with that, I'm in no need for FG, but for people with lower performance cpu's I can see the benefit of using it.

I remember that too, I don't think the sim ever looked better, and that tree mod didn't take any performance hit either, I always wondered why Asobo ruined it.

Amen to that. The tree mod was amazing.

Yeah, it was. None of us really understood why it worked the way it did code wise with no apparent fps hit but it was an amazing find. Like others, really curious why it was nerfed. Made no apparent sense when they did it and still doesn't. Are you reading this Asobo? Put it back in as standard code for MSFS 2024!

With what you have there is no way I'd get a 7950X3D.

If you really want to go 7-series then go 7800X3D over 7950X3D and you can thank me later.  However, I think with what you have (5900X) you will only see a small improvement on the order of 10%-15% or so in MSFS.  I can't really quantify the rest of it (smoothness) but I presume with your 5900X you're already set up for smoothness.  A 5900X is a fine cpu in its own right.   If you found a 5800X3D on the cheap, that would be an inexpensive upgrade for you, but only a slight upgrade.  You could keep your motherboard.  Going to 7-series, you'd need a new MB and ram.

As for Frame Generation (FG), I use FG + TAA and it's crisp and good quality.  Frame Gen + TAA is really nice.

In nvidia control panel, I set latency to "Ultra" and capped fps in control panel, and this solved my stuttering problem with panning.

Using vsync either in-game or in the control panel gives me stutter in pan.  So vsync off works for me in my current setup which is as follows:

4090+ Frame Gen + TAA + 4K ultra(mostly) + 60 hz refresh rate (no gysnc/freesync)

Why the 33% refresh rate? Is there any benefit or detriment to using 66%? or 100% ?

That depends on the refresh rate of the monitor in use.

Thanks for the input. I actually ALMOST bought a 5800X3D for $220 on prime day but figured it was probably better spent putting towards a new build in the future.

Well, it depends. If it's for gaming only, yes, but if he does other things with the PC (video editing, heavy multitasking, streaming...) then the 7950X3D is better.

The 5800X3D is now $291 new on Amazon. Don't know if that sounds cheap enough. I bought one tonight, take 2 days to get here. Amazon has nice return policies,  safer to buy from them.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

I'll be interested to see if you have any gains.  I think you should coming from a 5600X but I'm not sure how much.

Yeah it's awesome, did you undervolt as well? Makes such a difference to the temps and improves the performance.
