Enjoy your immersion looking at only Cumulus Clouds, and no lightning and T storms. That sure isn't my idea of immersion.

It isn't just Cumulus clouds, the default weather depiction is varying a lot in an infinite cloud combinations and this is giving the right feeling. Regarding the so called ash clouds, they are more than acceptable for me because the clouds receive the sun light and shadows in perfect 3D logic, and they are lighter o darker depending the weather. In the real world I flew through white, yellow, grey-ash and dirty clouds, FS20 reflect this very well. Regarding AS I'll never buy it because at the moment the cloud management appears to be "flat", but above all I have bad memories about AS + ASCA + P3D, a cartoonish clouds world that I paid a lot of money. Realism here is an opinion, there isn't a flight sim that can give you the real world, but AS at the moment is several feet below the default weather depiction. Also, I don't miss the "imaginary chops" imitating casual and light turbulences, maybe AS cloud turbulences is a good feature, but it's a very expensive one.

Missing the PMDG DC6 in MSFS 2024 (she's here, but...).

Great comparison.

ASFS weather is much better in the video, IMHO.

But hmm the turbulence effects are terribad in both scenarios. Too snappy/jolty. and barely any yawing tendency at all. Looks extremely fabricated and not realistic (more so with MSFS weather, but still).

The Sting weighs what, 600kg? based off my own experience flying the similar sized planes, they get pushed around, in every axis

Interesting observation. I deliberately chose two very light aircraft for these tests, as I wanted to compare turbulence, wind shear and drafts with default weather. I found the Sting much more difficult to control than the 152. Interestingly the Sting has CFD implemented in the flight model. The last flight with MSFS and the Sting was much worse than with AS though, I found it very hard to control the aircraft. Weather was about the same.

EDIT; Btw just remembered there were a few comments about AS clouds after my first video. That was my first flight with AS, and to be honest I thought the clouds looked good. In the subsequent flights, I’ve not found the AS clouds to be worse than default in any way.

Oh, I bow to no man in my disappointment at what they did to the clouds in SU5/7, but the cumulus is at least an accurate choice some, if not much of the time, as opposed to the globally uniform type of the addons which is accurate precisely none of the time.

Not convinced by that comment.

Sure, there's usually variety and/or you can see a front. Yet, when you're over the middle of a particular area of weather, uniform looking clouds can stretch to the horizon in all directions.

Yes, but something happened when I tried to post it, so I just forgot about it.

Wait, I thought the whole point of Activesky, apart from the turbulence was that the weather pattern and type changes from point A to point B using weather stations.

Or am I misunderstanding your text.

Kind of, maybe I was not precise enough: yes, Active Sky changes the weather on the flow when flying from A to B. But this is an dynamic process, means in my example: if you start in Zurich with clear skies, pass the Alps and land in Milano, where you have full overcast, Active Sky will progressively increase cloud coverage the moment a METAR station is passed where no more clear skies is reported.

BUT: Active Sky will display the sky always completely uniform, e.g. complete overcast will reach from one horizon to the other. Or: if you are at 37000ft and the overcast cloud layer is on 30000ft, you will see overcast in front of you, behind you, on your left side, on your right side until the horizon. Even if it might be that behind you, in a distance of only few miles, the sky would be completely clear.

Difficult to describe, simply look at a weather front and you will instantly see what I mean

I hadn't seen this before. Live Weather isn't as trouble-free as just having semi translucent cumulus clouds everywhere:

While this is true, due to the current API limitations, it comes down to a choice between more realistic clouds and cloud layers, and keeping the fronts. Or using AS in passive mode to get the active air effects and keep the fronts.

I still want to do more comparisons with how wind strength and gusts affect the aircraft on approach, but after that I’d like to take a turboprop or an airliner and climb through several cloud layers. I think this is where the default weather will fall short.

So far in my very limited testing, I find AS cloudscapes to be more convincing.

Btw found this in-depth article on wind shear. https://www.faasafety.gov/files/gslac/library/documents/2011/aug/56407/faa p-8740-40 windshear[hi-res] branded.pdf

I’ve just had AS for a few days, but I find that I start reading up on meteorology, which I haven’t done much of since my PPL days 😊

I think I encountered this in my last comparison video.

If someone thinks that Active Sky is too difficult to set up and use, they are in the wrong hobby.

…not difficult, just a couple of “small” hoops (pop ups) to navigate.

Presets ???? Live weather. Does it work in live weather. Also Bob, are you using passive or active mode
