  • I'm convinced many people would even find real life weather unrealistic.....

  • Some supposed non-kids throwing tantrums and coming up with wild takes based on a 2+ minute trailer meant for a non-simming audience, and then yammering on about how MS/Asobo are catering to "Xbox kid

  • I can't imagine going over hundreds of posts like this one from here to November if MSFS2024 is finally released on that month 😄

They are focusing on all of those. But those things don't make good trailers for Xbox.

Stuff like that will be touched on in the upcoming Discovery Series videos, just like with 2020.

Why were we presented video advertising this when it is far from what is actually represented; especially the native support of all cloud types. If that was the case, why do we only ever see cumulous types or some variation of cumulous?

In live weather the clouds variety was definitely there on release and all the way to SU6 when it was based solely on global Meteoblue data. From SU7 with METAR integration and blending of that with the global Meteoblue data the live weather took a downturn.

We can still get the variety with manually configured weather (whether we do that configuring ourselves or via add-ons like AS that do the configuring  on-the-fly for us). The core weather engine can't currently do cirrus cloud types still however, even in manual weather, so that'd definitely be a new cloud type they could add in MSFS 2024.

I agree that metar integration messed things up badly which is why I mainly use presets.

Because they didn't appreciate the performance impacts especially for Xbox and low end PCs?  Then learned as everything else expanded, accommodating high end aircraft, other addons that attract users etc they had to backpedal to meet performance issues.

While y'all are questioning their ability to mirror the Earth's atmosphere, I'm just here wondering if they figured out how to turn off the airport lights in the daytime....

Sadly I saw little to no improvements in clouds in the new trailer. The humidity/haze also looked the same. It's pretty crazy to think we might end up with a SIM that can't depict limited visibility due to high humidity and haze.

You can probably thank METAR integration for that.  I get tons of haze using presets.

I'm hoping 2024 has a toggle to turn OFF METAR data.

What would it take to translate actual weather data into this in the live weather domain? Sounds really difficult to try to connect.

I think AS is already doing this.  The way presets are implemented in MSFS I don't know if I'm using live weather or not.

When I say that I'm thinking that weather data is sufficient to allow the engine to create matching cloud types, just like local atmospheric physics creates cloud types and visibility.  Maybe it's already doing some of this if so perhaps nowhere near as well as it needs to be such that Live Weather is indistinguishable from Weather Presets which people say is much better to the degree it can be w/ our low resolution voxel density.   I think we'll see some improvements in this domain in the next version though won't guess how much improvement.  I'm certain MS/A knows full well this is always a hot topic.  After all it was initially the ortho scenery and lighting that made the sim so compelling and now cloud depiction is a glaring deficiency by comparison to the rest of the sim.  But yes, performance demands are real.

MSFS 2024 target audience is not primarily meteorologists or us real pilots, but as I pointed out before, the huge home entertainment market. otherwise they would indeed have put much more focus on weather, atc and etc 🤣.

Joerg has to decide: what sells more: these preview videos or a sticker

"Now with WAAS/RNP GPS certified for even the most challenging IFR CAT III weather"

Wrong again I'm afraid.. MSFS 2024 target audience is *everyone* as they've always said (serious simmers, pilots, the "home entertainment market" that prefer casual or entry-level simming, airliner flying, GA flying, those wanting weather realism, those wanting aviation activities & careers, etc etc)

Jorg doesn't need to decide anything as focusing on everyone sells the most 🙂.. MS can show these preview videos for the kind of audience like the XBox showcase event, *and* then also make Asobo go talk about and show the serious stuff for the kind of audience at FS Expo and elsewhere (oh, just like they did in 2023 funnily enough, after trailer #1).

Lack of focus on default ATC (so far) doesn't mean anything, as default ATC in every sim is cr*p and lower priority to other stuff that's been addressed so far .. They have already put lots of focus on weather and will continue to, similar to how they've put focus on avionics, systems, flight dynamics, and other areas of core simulation in MSFS 2020. Most of these were increased to unprecedented fidelity in the default sim compared to previous/other sims. And this will continue in v2024, as they've said and shown explicitly.

If it's still hard for you and some others to grasp that a 250+ person team can indeed focus on many things and multiple types of audiences without compromising on core simulation.. then perhaps you can re-read everything that's been said to this effect here, and pointers to what MS/Asobo have said/shown, and also reflect on how MSFS 2020 itself has evolved... more slowly this time, and perhaps it might clear the fog (pun intended). What might also help is to take that not-so-insurmountable leap in logical thinking and realize that this one trailer does not define MSFS 2024 or their strategy, especially when considering all else they've shown. It doesn't take much racking of the brain I assure you 🙂
