PMDG 777 Sounds

Do we know for sure if any third party devs will be making 777 sound set?

Yes. Boris from Boris Audio Works said another top tier sound person was making a soundset. Unknown who or when.

  • The sound is absolutely unacceptable.

I'm personally a fan of the PMDG 777, but I can't say I like the sounds.  I'm hopeful we will get a 3rd party option to replace them.

Sound of the GE-90's are too weak. I was hoping they sounded fierce like in real life. When I start up the PMDG 777 and head out to external view, i was extremely dissappointed in how weak they sounded. It was lacking the low frequency bass, and upon take off also. Where is that loud and distinct rumble that makes the GE-90's amazing? That's one of the main reasons I like the 777, and PMDG did a poor job with them.

If you want to know what the slat extension is SUPPOSED to sound like, see below video. PMDG sound is not even in the ballpark.  Flap sound is much more subdued in comparison if you are positioned in that area to hear it. The slat sound is very noticeable when sitting near them. I am back and forth to Europe monthly on UA almost always in 9A (first row of 2nd biz cabin) and the slat sound is completely audible, even when on approach where things can be a bit noisier as compared to sitting on the ground before taxi.

Hello Gang!

As someone who has travelled 7 Million+ miles on American Airlines, at least 2 million of those on the 777-300W, I can say that there are elements of this PMDG sound pack that sound realistic and others that don't.  Engine sounds definitely need to be worked on.  The initial compressor spool up sounds realistic but needs to be louder - the rest of the engine sounds (interior and exterior), I don't know from what aircraft they were borrowed from but definitely not a 777-300W.  Some of the perception also comes from where you have been seated on this plane.  Sounds in first/business class sound totally different than if you're seating in coach.  Another element is the type of engine.  In the case of American Airlines, they use the GE90's on the 77W and these have a particular sound versus the RR and the low noise PW's that United uses.   For example, the sound of the slats and flaps and hydraulics (as in the avia8ir video above), sound very loud in coach while they are hardly noticeable in business class and first.  The sound of reverse should be louder.  The clackity clack sound of the gear touching down is missing.  The sound pack is not horrendous - does the job, but it needs to be improved.  My 2 cents.

Bought it yesterday and overall a nice experience.

The sounds however....

There are just something missing. Its hard to my finger on it, but it feels like there is no depth to them.

Go fly the Fenix, and then go back to the 777 and its like day and night.

Lets hope they update them, or a 3d party developer makes a proper soundpack.

I don't feel remotely qualified to say whether the sounds of this or any other aircraft are "realistic" and neither am I a huge fan of what PMDG has become / not become since its heyday in FS9.

But I do wonder how fair some of these criticisms about sound are? People hearing the same sounds, hear different things: this has been human experience forever! Plus surely there will be variations between different airframes? And, within each airframe, differences from seat to seat / metre to metre? And, even in comparable locations, differences caused by different recording devices and environments / air pressure etc? And that's quite apart from the fact that end users are playing the thing on widely different machines with different sound fidelity / dedicated sub-woofers etc.

So, personally, sound is one of the things I am willing to be forgiving about: for me, it's more about immersion than precision. My priorities are to do with systems / performance fidelity and also the sheer visual quality of the cockpit.

By that metric, I think the 777's sounds are basically fine: not "hair on the back of the neck" good, but good enough to know what's going on and without detracting from the immersion.

The flap sounds have been wrong since the P3D days. They still sound nothing like the real plane.

For me the immersion is lost when I cannot faithfully hear those GE90's. Those engines are extremely powerful. So I am very much looking forward to see if PMDG will do something about them or see a proper soundpack that will bring this plane to life. One of the reasons I love the 777 so much is because of those GE90's, and if it doesn't sound anything close to it, then it'll be just sitting in the hangar unused for me.

It's funny, I definitely hear the roar of the GE90's on takeoff but's weird is I use an optical cable to a full 5.1 setup.  The engine sounds come through my center channel...  I would have expected them from the sides.  They do roar like the real things just out of the wrong channel;.  I am wondering if people who aren't hearing them at all aren't running 5.1 or 7.1 surround...  If I were to unplug my center channel the whole roar of the spool up on takeoff would go away.

I have two small speakers by the display and a larger speaker under the desk. How do I know which kind of system I have?

That would be considered 2.1

2 speakers and a subwoofer

I run 5 speakers with a dedicated center channel and the subwoofer under the desk.  Engine noises are through my center when they should really be from my sides and ideally my rears.

For example in a racing sim with a rear engine car the engine noise comes from behind you just as it would in real life....

I'm running surround 7.1 with optical cable to bose speakerrs with a subwoofer.

Do your engine sounds come predominantly (almost fully) from your center?

So where is this big roar on the real 77 flight deck?

I’m not necessarily doubting you, but do you have a link for where this was said?
