#1 Reason why I get discouraged using MSFS...

#1. Loooooonnnnggg load times even when I only have 37 GB in my community folder and 226 programs not installed in Premium Deluxe on an NVMe 2 GB drive with 1 TB free space. 😞

When I decide to take a flight, I start the sim and a couple other programs and websites I need for flight planning and let the sim load in the background.
Flightplanning takes me something between 5 to 15 minutes.

Within that time, the sim is fully loaded.

  • Ah yes the old chestnut of loading times, anyone old enough to remember games on tapes? 40 minutes to load then it'd crash within a minute, 3 minutes loading today is nothing compared to that hell 😄

  • Fortunately that changes with MSFS 2024. Seems they are going away from the long consistency check and only loading what is needed. That should cut down loading times significantly, especially when yo

  • I always have to read Avsim every day, so I know what is currently wrong with MSFS.  😉

How loooooooong load times?

From clicking the desktop icon to aircraft cockpit...
---
MSFS:  FSReborn's FSR500 - 4:26
P3Dv4: Xtreme Prototype's Learjet 25D - 2:29
DCS: Eagle Dynamic's A-10C II - 2:13

In MSFS, I take-off from the same two airports. Either from EGLC or KHAF, and simply using one of six GA planes: the TBM 850, the C414, PA-28, KitFox, RV-10 or the FSR500. They all take about the same time to load. My rolling cache is 10 GB and I have 1 GB hardwire connection.

I have no idea why it's taking MSFS 4 minutes and 26 seconds when all I want to do is SIMPLY confirm changes to a plane detailed in a changelog AFTER installing an update or a bug fix and relaunching MSFS. Changing to another plane consumes time too.

EDIT: I don't think I have too many active add-ons in my community folder compared to what others mentioned here. I can't think of anything else to delete or inactivate that might shorten the load times.

Hardware: i7-8700k, GTX 1070-ti, 32GB ram, NVMe/SSD drives with lots of free space.
Software: latest Windows 10 Pro, P3Dv4.5+, FSX Steam, and lots of addons (100+ mostly Orbx stuff).

I suggest exchanging your hard disk ?  for an SSD or NVMe, that would cut your loading time in half or less. but then you wouldn't make it even to the first cup of coffee. priorities.

Already use a nvme drive (4tb so no, that won't help. I've just a lot of addons. I could limit the active addons with addonlinker but that would limit me what and where to fly or force me to restart msfs between flights.

I'm not really bothered by it though, plenty to do while it is loading.

doesn't show in your Flightsim rig, that's why I suggested it.

Talkeetna is PATK. Ketchikan is PAKT. I'm not sure which you have.

Right, sorry for the typo.

It is Talkeetna, the freeware one. I was quite happy about this scenery until that bug happened. Then I was forced to uninstall it and buy the payware OrbX one instead 😞

how do you know this is an inherent "bug in MSFS" and not an inefficient 3rd party implementation issue when only some freeware sceneries have this problem?

Concerning the loading times, please keep in mind that there exist a bug/incompatibility in MSFS with some sceneries which will cause a very long loading time. It doesn't depend on how many addons you have, it just depends on how many addons suffer from that bug.

The only example I have in mind is the freeware scenery for Lake Hood in Anchorage Talkeetna PAKT, which alone made my loading time jump from 1:30 minutes to 6 minutes. The author even explains it in the description of the addon in the .to website. It's the only example I know but I suppose there are other sceneries suffering from the same bug.

Do you think doing a clean/safe launch with nothing in the community folder should drop the load time down to 1:30 minutes or so?  Right now my load time is just under 7 minutes and I have maybe 10 or 12 airports installed on top of 3 planes.

I pretty much just takes a little thoughtfulness so that you turn on your machine then launch MSFS before you go make the coffee, take the dog out, yada yada, then upon your return you're ready to go.  It would of course be best if they could get the load time well down but it is what it is and has work arounds.

Wow that is amazing.  I've got just 52Gb so it must be a bugged one or two.

Is it always scenery-related that has this bug or is it any number of other sectors?

I would suggest you to give it a try. To my knowledge, this is only scenery-related, so you should at least try to move your sceneries out to a temporary folder and see how your sim starts.

On a side note, you should also check that your MSFS folder and MSFS main process (.exe) are declared as "exclusions" in your antivirus software (I use the default MS Defender).

I just added exclusions so after a restart will see if any impact before moving on to the comm folder.
