Going to try short range airliner

Featured Replies

The decision to sell the 737-600 at a bargain basement price was the best decision that PMDG ever made as far as I am concerned. I only really wanted the 600 in P3D, but I had to buy all four to get it. I have zero interest in flying real world types on real world routes, so it was perfect for me.

I am hoping that PMDG make me a similar offer with (presumably) the 777-200LR. Whether I can hold on for that when they release the F remains to be seen

  • If you just want an airliner, and don't mind a lack of real-world routes or fictional liveries, the PMDG 737-600 at $35 is a good deal for a good airplane.

  • The ATR is cheap, works well and fits your bill. It’s not overly complicated, it has a few fun quirks, and has operators all over the world for routes.

It's a great airplane though. I put a few fictitious liveries on it to pretend it's a 734.

Did you mean the 735? The 734 is longer than even the - 700, let alone the -600.

Not flown it in a while now but I used to enjoy the Shorts, it handles really nicely.

I used to fly it between Jersey and Guernsey, and Guernsey to Southampton and back, these were real world routings for the Aurigny Shorts 360.

I hadn't considered the PMDG B737. Fenix just released the Airbus A319 which is equivalent.  Any recommendations which one is 'better'?

I think both are equally great. It depends on personal preference which one you enjoy more.

I have always preferred the Airbus over the B737 and I just used the A319 for a 59 nm flight ENBO-ENSH into a 3114 ft runway and back. It was fun.

The choice for me boils down to Boeing vs Airbus, plus the fact that Fenix requires you to buy the A320 in order to also buy the 319/321. So getting the 319 would end up being a $100 purchase.

At $35, the 736 is, AFAIK, the absolute cheapest "study level" airliner available by a good margin. I just flew it last night and, as always, thoroughly enjoyed it.

And only 25 hours non-stop Berlin to NYC 😁

Is the PMDG 737-600 as complex (in the model) as the PMDG 737-800? I wonder why the difference in price.

Yes - the same fidelity.

Main difference is that 700, 800 and 900 all include multiple variants (BBJ, Freighter, Pax, and 900/ER). 736 "only" gives you the pax version.

Aaaannnnndd...the official Marketing Term for that low price is "loss leader" 😁

They get you hooked on PMDG quality, and before you know it, you end up buying everything they have 😉

I have purchased the PMDG 737 600, FS2Crew Sop 2, animated first officer and GSX.

Time for some airliner flying 👍🙂

ENSH - that’s ambitious! Never thought of taking an airliner there. So I’ll probably need to try it 😅 949m runway… don’t care if it’s realistic or not, it’ll be a fun thing to try.

I agree, it’s great! Which is why I’m not planning on getting the A319 (if that makes sense).

I use Aerosoft's CRJ 500/700 and really like them for short flights w/ pax loads under 60.   They have sophisticated FMC though different than Boeing/Airbus and I think some have been fooled that navigation doesn't work reliably but that I'm afraid is operator error.  They hand fly quite well too.  Plays well with A Pilot's Life, Self-Loading Cargo and GSX Pro.

Sorry, chalking up the navigational issues with this plane to user error is too broad a statement. Some can be attributed to user error but the plane definitely has numerous navigation bugs.

I love the CRJ. I fly it for a living. Even with all of its issues in the sim it’s still a fun plane to use. Very challenging/rewarding. I’m really hoping Aerosoft eventually releases the update they have been promising for 2 years…but I’m not holding my breath

I'm a fan of the FSS EJet series (170/175), even though it gets knocked for not having VNAV.

Quick and easy checklist, good EFB, decent FMC.  Lots of real world short routes to replicate.

Flown 100's of flights and once I understood how to interact w/ the FMC it's been flawless, period.  If that's not the case for you maybe it doesn't match your RW experience but again, operator error.  What I mean to say to be clear is one can still maintain lateral navigation, that is no need to disengage AP when a 'navigation bug' for example unexpectedly didn't follow a course change to the next waypoint, which is generally rare but happens.  JBarrett did a nice job of explaining how CRJ's FMC is not as advanced as what many are used to, that would not be you of course, but may explain why some are unable to recover w/o much ado after a bug occurs.
