  • Especially with DDR5 and AMD, there’s an advantage with 2 sticks vs 4. Basically with 4 sticks it might be hard to run at the same speed and timings. In extreme cases there could be instability issues

  • No one is actually claiming huge improvements.  Most of us are suggesting incremental improvements we weren't expecting adding to overall RAM consumption and MSFS RAM consumption and noticed less micr

You're not crazy, I think, otherwise there are 2 of us this weekend. I was thinking, I'll see with 32GB and I just ordered 64GB, it's arriving on Thursday 😂

I've been looking around and it looks like stocks of decent DDR4 RAM are drying up.

Now I'm anxious, and likely to contradict my earlier decision to 'wait and see'...

I'm AM4 so DDR5 is not an option.

My will power has collapsed 🙄

I've just ordered a Kingston Renegade kit that's verified on my mobo. It is better to have something you don't need, not need something you don't have...

You could. Just keep in mind that you might not be able to run at 6000mhz cl30.

What we need is a separate list of specs for running MSFS 2024 at the three most popular resolutions. I would think this would be a major factor,

Would we really benefit from more than 32GB RAM if we're on a HD monitor?  How much would the specs change for running at 2K? What hardware is needed to run at 4K?

Does increasing from 32 to 64 GB actually makes any difference if your VRAM is less than 12GB, or if your Bandwidth is less than 100 MPS?

GPU and VRAM is highly linked to resolution. I’m not sure if resolution is linked to RAM. Not saying that 64GB will not be beneficial at max settings and lots of background apps running though.

Just as an example of resources used at 4K (ultra settings) in the current sim: I have a 4090 and currently flying the SWS Kodiak in very heavy clouds. GPU usage has been up to 99%, VRAM 17GB and RAM 18GB.

Thanks.

No. The x3d do better with 2 sticks. Get 2x32 of the same type you have from G.skill, just get the 64GB version. Replace like for like and you should not have to do anything in your bios.

dont think filling 4 slots is a good idea on AM5 at the moment better with 2 sticks for optimal performance

Thanks for explaining that!

I just ordered 2 more 16GB RAM sticks. Since I had 2 slots open, it was not too expensive and I figured that RAM was my bottleneck.  My monitor is 2K (2560x1440 w/G-Sync).
My Nvidia RTX 3080 only has 10GB VRAM, but I have really great bandwidth (800+ MPS).
So I should be able to run MSFS 2024 at high settings without too much problem.

Understand that your comment wasn't aimed at me, but I did some research on 4 vs 2 sticks on my AM4 platform and the subject is as clear as mud. My conclusion was that it only mattered if you wanted to achieve maximum overclocking by adjusting voltages and timings seperately rather than go with one of the RAM profiles which is what I do.

The kit I ordered is 4 x 16 GB and Kingston has verified that it runs on my ROG Strix mobo at 3600 CL16-20-20 1.35v. The site says "If a K4 "Kit of 4" part is not listed for a particular speed/capacity, it is not recommended to install two K2 "Kit of 2" parts together. K4 kits are only listed if the configuration has been tested as stable."

Hi. Did anything else change, or solely going from 32 to 64 stopped the odd landing stutter etc?

Well the problem is so many things change everyweek on a computer.  Without a sandbox or a control I couldn't tell you whether it was updates to the game, updates to Nvidia drivers, windows updates etc that might have all increased performance in addition to the RAM.  But I have noticed that if I have multiple programs (FSLTL, GSX, Chrome for SimBrief and weather) open now I don't have CTDs where I would run out of memory in complex scenarios.  This would manifest as a long stutter (30 secs or so) a few miles out from the airport that would sometimes result in a CTD.  I don't get that anymore either.  I also noticed that when doing multi tasking with multimedia, it's faster, smoother, and less chance of a hangup during rendering or compiling large video files or photoshop tasks. Especially with multiple programs running.

So if you aren't getting CTDs with high settings and FSLTL and BATC/SIAI or GSX running, you may not need it.  It will not make a difference on FPS.    My system is a i7 13700K, 4080 Super and 7000/MB/s Samsung 980 NVME. 64 GB of 4X 16MB XPG 6000MHzRAM in all 4 slots.
