This is how I spent the last hour:

  1. Simbrief: plan a simple IFR flight from LFPG to EGLL with the A320v2
  2. Load the sim and start from gate C&D
  3. Import the flight in the EFB and file it with ATC
  4. Set up the flight on the tablet, INIT, FUEL, PERF, the usual stuff
  5. ATC: IFR clearance option is nowhere to be seen. Sigh, probably I should have imported the FP in the EFB when I was still in the world map, but I swear that at least once it worked from the cockpit
  6. End flight to return to the world map - FREEZE
  7. Close the sim with Task Manager
  8. Repeat steps 2-5 remembering to import the FP into the EFB from the world map
  9. ATC gives clearance, I start the engines and request pushback
  10. Begin taxiing to RWY09R
  11. As I reach a bridge, the aircraft bounces like a soccer ball and crashes despite the low taxiing speed
  12. The novel revolutionary "Back on track" feature puts me above the runway at ~150 knots with all the FMC data lost
  13. I quit for today and am about to start playing another game

This is right Mr Fuzzy. Remember in 2020 when we had aircraft that would turn left and bank right? Uggggh! It took them ages, but it was eventually fixed and now AI is mostly enjoyable to watch in MS2

  • All of these items are "genuine improvements to the Flight Simulator genre". How people rank them in terms of importance is up to personal preference. Nonetheless, these are all worthy advancements

You're far ahead. I just spent my previous weekend for setting up the controller.

I like planning an interesting route in Little Nav Map, firing up the sim, selecting ANY aircraft with the G1000 and finding you can no longer use the key board to enter the plan.

No problem, I’ll spend an extra fifteen minutes twiddling the knobs and then find you can no longer tune Nav frequencies.

Two beginner mistakes:

1) Having crashes enabled in MSFS. Should be the first thing you disable when opening the new sim

2) Using default ATC. Just don't.

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

I think his point is these things are built into the sim and you shouldn’t have to employ workarounds on day 1

Perhaps not but if those things don't work properly you might consider employing workarounds on day 2. Specially when you know those things won't be solved any time soon (if at all). Why keep on frustrating yourself if you know what the only solution is?!

ATC is a feature of the game and it works OK once you have set your flight plan correctly.

I am no beginner, I use flight simulators since 1996 and MSFS since 2004.

About crashes maybe you are right: considering the pathetic status in which the airports and traffic are, it's better to keep them disabled.

Planes flying backwards, taking off in the wrong way and intersecting with each other.

Enjoy:

Also, where are the advertised real traffic liveries? 90% are random generic ones.

Thank you! to the OP @MrFuzzy for bringing this up because it's exactly what has been happening to me since yesterday when I started, for the first time, to use ATC, the EFB and the Inibuilds A321 LR !!! What you describe is facsimile what I experienced, specially the rather IRRITATING lack of proper options when we select Clearence, and the Freeze when returning to the World or Main screens ...

I've given up and I could finally install BATC because I own it, as well as FSHUD (although I didn't yet decide if I'll buy the upgrade for FS 2024...), but I prefer to continue testing all of the default features and aircraft, and now that I finally have "full control" over the Control settings 🙂 I'm rather busy already... not to mention that I still have to make my week XP12 and Condorsoaring flights too 🙂

I agree that 2020 is somewhat more reliable.. But there are still those who advise us not to expect too much from either sim regarding:

the default ATC,

the default traffic,

the default weather

or the default planes.

Why spend so much time and effort creating and developing half-baked elements that need to be replaced at the very beginning?

Apart from that they say it's a great sim.  Just use after-market replacements for all those elements and "eventually"  "they're sure" "it will be" a great sim.

What is it exactly we were supposed to be waiting for during that year-long period of hype?

This was all too tiresome the first time around with 2020, including the vague yet equivocal promises regarding compatibility with other products.  I see no reason to start that process yet again for another product that will never be finished if MS's long history is any indication.

I have returned to MSFS2020. I couldn't allow a company to sell me an unfinished product.
