December 12, 20241 yr OK, I don't know why this has reared it's head again, but it's really affecting the flying for me. I know there will be countless others who say they don't have a problem or don't know what the problem is, but for me, and many, many other simmers, it's a big deal. What the hell is the point of blowing hard earned cash to get a high end monitor, if the image is constantly inaccurate or overexposed! I am really tired of this shifting of the exposure in certain situations. In particular it's very noticeable when in the cockpit and the outside becomes overexposed, sometimes completely 'blown out' sky with over exposed, clouds. Also, in some situations, the terrain can be overexposed too. Then when you move to an external view, there is a massive shift in the exposure to compensate for the difference in brightness. It really is very annoying. The issue was dsicussed many times on Avsim and I'm sure I read lots of posts on the official MS forum too about it. I rememebr it was fixed, or at least improved considerably, a few updates back. However, it's only recently I've noticed the issue again, so I guess one of the recent updates broke what had been previously fixed, as seems to be a familar process with updates to MSFS. There is a line in the cfg file for 'eye adaptation' I have tried changing the value to 0 from 1, but it has made zero difference. Is there anyone here that has an answer, because it really is a PITA! The pics below show the same view but from inside and outside of the cockpit. December 12, 20241 yr I am 100% behind you on this one...it drives me nuts, ruins what should be a good flying experience...it's pretty bad when flying outside the plane is better than in the cockpit. Xp12 also has this issue, but not to the same degree. Why they can't make some in cockpit code to deal with this separate for the dynamic lighting is beyond me. December 12, 20241 yr if recall, this was a problem dating back a long, long time. It's a classic photography problem eg your subject is in the shade of a tree; you expose for that by opening up the aperture for the 'dark' area but this also overexposes the background. In this case substitute subject with flightdeck and background for external world. There is a happy medium somewhere but it would appear to have gone missing because this was pretty much resolved.

December 12, 20241 yr Human eye sees about 15 fstops old video cams only about 6. New cameras sometimes as much as 12. But most screens can only display 8 stops or so. Also in the real world our brain is interpreting data all the time. Problem is how do you apply a profile that does not look really dull low contrast and still make it appealing. This is why color grading is such a science in photography and film (or video). I guess because the sim is trying to show real light levels that can't be displayed we have this problem. As stated before this is a classic video and photography problem. December 12, 20241 yr @Rocky_53 ... I totally agree. I've always hated the eye adaptation "feature" with a vengeance. I accept that it's a complex problem (that our eyes are better at it than any hardware) but other sims don't have this problem (eg. DCS). Are you MSFS 2020 or 2024? I don't see the entry in the default usercfg.opt for 2024. It was there in 2020. Maybe that's why that setting is being ignored (if you're on 2024)? The flag is simply not being processed <?>.
December 12, 20241 yr Try turning off "Color Grading' in User.cfg in addition to the 'Eye Adaptation'. That seemed to solve many of the eye adaptation issues I was having... Eric i9-12900k, RTX 5070ti OC, 32GB ddr5 5600 RAM, 2TB 980 Pro SSD, Titan 240RX AIO, Samsung CRG90 49", Win 11

December 12, 20241 yr The use of HDR has significantly reduced the glare issue for me in 2020. Some of those screenshots look pretty typical for standard dynamic range images, so you might want to give it a try if you haven't already done so. Be sure to turn on the HDR system in Windows. W11 provides an easy calibration process that should yield good results. December 12, 20241 yr Do the HDR images look any different from the standard ones? In my case, I recall that various buttons had to be pressed on the monitor controls, and settings need to be adjusted in the Windows systems pages, before the HDR suddenly appeared. Your photos have the characteristic look of blown out highlights that would seem to be associated with limited dynamic range. Of course, it's virtually impossible to successfully display HDR images on forums, etc. It's a process that breaks if any step in the posting and viewing drop from HDR to SDR. Good luck.
