What MSFS 2024 got right

Look at the landing and replays from V1-Simulations.

For those who don't think 2024 has improved flight model and ground handling, this real world pilot disagrees with you.

I believe you and the pilot but sometimes I wonder if these pilots are great in RL but not so much in a simulator.  🙂

  • You missed the improved flight model, sky colours, clouds, cloud colours, ground tesselation, turbulence, ground physics, water physics, walk arounds, EFB / free charts etc. etc.?

As a GA flyer, I uninstalled 2020 and haven't gone back.  Why? -Better graphics and scenery.  2020 absolutely blew me away with being able to actually fly VFR instead of having some vague landcla

V1 in addition to being an IRL experienced A320/etc pilot is also a veteran simmer who has used all platforms for a long time and reviewed various aircraft on various sims. He along with 320 Sim Pilot and Into The Blue Simulations are a few of the IRL pilots whose viewpoints (on sims and aircraft add-ons) I especially take note of.

I guess that watching RL flights on the tube, say for the HJET, give me a better Idea of what a plane can and can't do.

I'm really looking forward to what they have to say in today's dev update. At the very least I hope we get a start date for the SU1 beta.

Here's an update on my experience with MSFS2024:

TL;DR:

MSFS2024 works very well for me. I don't have any bandwidth issues, it's compatible with a lot of payware and freeware addons, it performs really well, and it looks very good (increased ground resolution, ray traced shadows, new lightning model, clouds).

I don't miss 2020 (although I still have a stripped-down version installed for testing addons). For people on the fence, I'd suggest getting a §1 Xbox game pass 14 day subscription. Installation should be quick (11.2 GB on my system). If you have any issues, feel free to PM me on Avsim or discord (username Cpt_Piett).

I'm currently on a flight from Hong Kong to Shanghai, using the following addons:

  • Fenix A321 with a freeware Hong Kong Express livery
  • BATC with AIG models
  • Self-loading cargo
  • Active Sky in passive mode, sim live weather and real time
  • RealTurb v2
  • AutoFPS by @Reset XPDR using the new FPS Cap mode
  • FSUIPC
  • GSX Pro
  • FsHub and LRM for flight statistics
  • MobiFlight Connector for my miniFCU unit
  • Seasons Enhanced by Bijan
  • VHHH Hong Kong Intl (2024 version) by WF Scenery Studio
  • ZSPD Shanghai Pudong (2024 compatible) by WF Scenery Studio
  • Navigraph Charts and navdata for the sim and several addons
  • MSFS Map Enhancement
  • Addons linker
  • Airport Override Checker

I'm about 1.5 hours into the flight with no issues so far. Well, performance on the ground at Hong Kong Intl was a bit marginal, but it'd be a bit weird if it wasn't with all my addons.

I've currently got 156 addons (460 GB) in the community folder (using addons linker) with little or no glitches. I'm quite meticulous in choosing addons (avoiding payware and freeware addons that aren't officially compatible). However, I've tested a lot of "non-compatible" addons, and most of them work (sometimes with a few glitches).

I'm using the following aircraft:

  • Bonanza G36 improvement project
  • Black Square piston and turbine Dukes
  • Black Square TBM 850
  • Cows DA42
  • Flysimware 414 Chancellor
  • Fenix A319, A320 and A321
  • IniBuilds A300-600R premium
  • IniBuilds A320 Neo v2
  • IniBuilds A321LR
  • IniBuilds A330
  • JustFlight RJ
  • FSReborn Sting S4
  • WBSim C152

TDS GTNXi is working very well with my GA aircraft.

To make this post a bit nuanced, I'll mention this:

  • Getting rid of the chocks and covers on default aircraft can be a nuisance (very specific assignments are necessary)
  • iniBuilds aircraft causes a sim CTD when exiting the flight
  • The ground textures can sometimes look a bit bland / washed-out
  • Cockpit panels can sometimes look very "bloomy" at night (in lack of a better word)
  • Saving a new default view (VFR pilot view save) in a sim session causes an incorrect default view for all aircraft (to solve this, restart the sim)
  • Windshield reflections in some aircraft (e.g. the A300) can be very distracting
  • I don't like the sun lens flare at all - I wish it was possible to disable it like in 2020 in usercfg.opt
  • I suspect that going to the sim menu does not pause the flight completely (e.g. fuel burn) - although I'm not 100% sure
  • Walkaround mode "toggle EFB" blocking view

Hopefully, most of these issues will be resolved in SU1 and further updates (as well as payware and freeware addon improvements). Still, I don't regret getting MSFS2024 on launch day.

IniBuilds A300-600R premium

I just purchased this, what a fantastic aircraft!

CPU Ryzen 7800X 3D  RAM 32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 6000MHz GPU GEFORCE RTX 4090
Monitor AOC AGON AG352UCG UltraWide G-Sync @ 3440x1440
Internal Storage 1TB NVMe PCIe SSD
External Storage Three 4Tb HDs

I installed the Wbsim freeware 152 and didn't really have time for a flight, but I wanted to start up and make sure it loaded into the sim ok.  My plan was to just fire it up and make sure it loaded.  I just pick a quick flight out of Van Nuys California before sunset.  The sim just looks so good that I have to start the engine and do a pattern.

I'm a GA flyer, but even a 152 is a little dull for me, but with this sim I'm just fully engaged.  No 3rd party scenery (my Orbx KVNY hasn't been on the marketplace yet).

Oh I believe you..and I am very much looking forward to trying it again.....but I am still not going back to 2024 until the following things are fixed:

1. Control settings not disappearing (or a way to transfer over your 2020 settings without setting them individually for 3 hours to have it not save).

2. JF RJ (and others) working with no WASM issues, black gauges, engine 3 failing mid flight with no failures.etc

3. Sun glare as you mentioned is terrible

4. Planes/Flight Model: some planes (as you mentioned to me a few days ago) are twitchy as heck and sometimes the flare doesn't flare.

As for the washed out colors or odd coloration glitches in the cockpit? I can live with those. Small things, really. Super annoyed with 2024 but it will be the future for all of us. As long as they can fix the glaring issues. Yes, pun intended. But losing my controls and having to rebind them? No thanks. Is there a way to just transfer your settings on over?

What it gets right (from the last time I used it):

1. Looks vs performance is excellent. World is modeled very, very well with ability to "crank" up the settings with less FPS loss in comparison to how clunky 2020 is in comparison.

2. More planes and most of our previous stuff working from previous sim.

That being said: I use ORBX, Contrails etc. They don't really have a lot of "official" 2024 compatibility from 2020. Is that a big deal, or should i just start migrating stuff over to 2024 and check for myself? Last time I was using it, I installed PADU (Dutch Harbor) that is not officially compatible but it worked just fine. Maybe I should just test for myself.

Darn you, Piett. I will give it another try. You're too convincing.

Anything else you're going to pressure me into again?

KEEP in mind I am already married, Piett.

Beautiful colors and sceneries, nice live weather, you can install it downloading just 10GB, nice airplanes variety, no need of navigraph, charts are there. But the Fenix is still on rails and floating at landing 😅🤣

Accurate placement of objects still is reserved for third party content creators it seems. The bushes on the edge of the taxiway are a showstopper... It has been like this since MSFS where we see taxiways lights splattered all over the place on default airports.

While I am enjoying 2024, I fully support anyone sticking with 2020 for now.  I think it is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

Everyone's mileage will vary.  The addons I'm using aren't really giving me any issues, but obviously we all fly in different ways.

We're not fanatics who say everyone should be doing what we're doing.

What 2024 gets right is it gives simmers another option.  😀

All of our spare time is limited, so people should be doing whatever maximizes their enjoyment.  The last thing anyone should do is bang their heads into a wall trying to get something to work.

I think I ate my own words. Likely I will reinstall again this weekend and try again. Unless my controls aren't there 🙂
