I've been using the G2 Reverb for a couple years now and have things pretty well dialed in for my current system ( 9800X3D/64GB  RTX4070S/12GB, all drives are NVMe ) and fly with a pretty consistent 40 FPS.  I use OpenXR tool kit to implement most of the recommendations.

I am not happy with the sharpness or clarity of the G2.  It just always seems like there is a light haze or not quite visible fog  in the air.  Looking around, even in External view, the scenery is not crisp.

When I set the systems up for maximum clarity, with no regard to FPS, I still see a lack of clarity.

Is it possible to see better quality images with my current CPU/GPU if I upgrade from the G2 goggles?

What would be the upgrade VR hardware be to give me significantly better clarity with my current CPU/GPU?

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D  / MSI X870 Tomahawk Mobo / 64 GB DDR5 memory / RTX 4070 Super with 12 GB VRAM / AORUS FO48U 4k display
NVMe for Drive C, an NVMe device dedicated to Flight Sim 2024 and a separate NVMe device for Flight Sim 2020 and an NVMe dedicated to 500GB of addons managed by AddonsLinker   / 1 GB Comcast Xfinity Internet connection / HP Reverb G2 / Tobii 5 Head & Eye Tracking

Not really sure how significant of an improvement your looking for but if it helps any i went

from a G2 to a Quest 3 and overall I'm OK with it.

Not overly taxing on my system.

But there are other options available out there, from what i hear that are significantly better.

This has nothing to do with the G2. I have 9800x3d as well and an RTX 4090 and I switched to 2D as I was fed up with VR and I see the same haze and fog on a 4K screen. In fact, I find it worse in MSFS2024 than in 2020.

You may get better overall clarity with a Quest3 or PIMAX, but the haze will still be there. Btw, I did try a Quest 3 and a Pimax Crystal and I returned both of them for various  reasons. The Quest 3 had a much bigger sweet spot, but I found the sharpness better in the G2 as long as you looked in the sweet spot. The Pimax was way too bulky and uncomfortable for me. So currently, I gave up VR and I am enjoying the freedom of flying without wearing anything.

I am certainly not trying to discourage anyone from using VR, as VR does make flying more real and immersive. But for me, I am off VR for a while unless something new comes up which works better than the existing VR crop and which does not break the bank 😂. There are alternatives now, buy they require base stations as well and that’s a definite deal breaker for me.

I'll tell you something which has just blown my mind in the last hour or so. I wear reading glasses of various strengths for the different bits of reading I do, 3.00 for my phone and 1.50 for reading a computer screen for example, but it never occured to me that I might be better off wearing them in VR.

I was comparing my Pimax CL and my Reverb G2 in FS'20 and I was beginning to think that the G2 actually looked a bit sharper, when a little voice inside me said "Ha. Put your glasses on!"

I had a pair of 1.50s handy for seeing the computer screen, so I put them on and wow! Suddenly everything was in focus.

This particular pair were a bit bulky, but I found a pair of tiny 2.00s which fit nicely inside the headset and were even sharper.

If you need glasses to read a book or TV then give them a go in VR, you might surprise yourself.

Tht only thing better than the G2 is the pimax crystal or the varjo aero.

I have heard of some people buying lenses per their eye glasses Rx that might improve it slightly.

Imo the clarity isn't really there yet.  It's closer for sure and I've had some really immersive flights in 2020 and 24.  But you gotta fly in TAA and that hurts fps.

I wonder if anyone is using a RTX 5090 with a CL and TAA?

I have recently upgraded from an HP Reverb G2 to the Pimax Crystal Light and it's a day & night difference. not only the much higher resolution, but real lenses, not fresnel plastic discs with chromatic aberration.

there is also a separate head strap for enhanced comfort.

https://pimax.com/products/crystal-comfort-topstrap

fps are slightly lower, as expected, but 45-50 fps average feels very smooth. I fly usually GA aircraft mostly with analog round instruments, with DLSS quality setting, works fantastic.

I would highly recommend to get lens inserts: more comfort, better edge to edge clarity, and they will protect the VR lenses and avoid scratches. cost per pair $ 60. I got them for all my 3 VR headsets from:

https://vroptician.com/

hint: make sure to send them your far sight prescription lens values for your custom made lens inserts. although the VR screen is very close to your eyes, the image itself is optically equivalent to far sight reading. you can even specify separate lens values for your left and right eye.

they use the best lens quality made by Zeiss, the company that normally builds space telescopes. that quality will suffice for my VR headsets. 😄

I'm not going to spend $ 3.000-4.000 on a RTX 5090: considering only some 15% fps increase based on only minimal hardware progress vs. the RTX 4090 and no multi-frame gen in VR, I will wait for the next generation based on TSMC's future 3 nanometer technology.

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

The Reverb G2 is the only VR headset I’ve ever used. Never once used any other VR headset.  It's all I know, and I've been using it for 4 years or so now.

The other day I ordered a Big Screen Beyond 2e…It was between that and a PCL for me.  However, given the QC issues currently with Pimax, I couldn't bring myself to buy one.

It's going to be tough waiting until July for it to arrive.  I’m so interested to see just how big of an upgrade it will be.  Like I said, I have no idea what to expect.  The G2 is all I know.

I also upgraded to a 5080 (from a 3080) over the weekend so I can at least crank my G2 settings for the time being, and yeah it certainly looks a lot better now than it did with my old 3080.

I was initially hesitating re. everything Pimax, but my PCL turned out to be flawless and I am enjoying it a lot.

the BSB 2e has lower resolution, needs headphones and base stations, but is more comfortable. it will be an interesting comparison.

Since you are using a 4070s GPU,  In my opinion keeping the G2 is the best option (unless  you plan to also upgrade the GPU to a 4090/5090).  The haze that is bothering you in VR is present in 2D or 3D, as it is an MSFS issue, not a VR or G2 issue.  Increasing resolution with a PCL or similar headset will not get rid of that haze.

My current setup is 9800X3D, RTX5080 and 64GB Ram - so not extremely different from yours.  I am getting quite good visuals and performance in MSFS24 with a combination of DLSS4, OpenXR Toolkit and the AutoFPS app.   I have a mix of in-game VR graphics settings that probably averages to "high".

I do plan to eventually upgrade to a Pimax CL or other, but I suspect I'll need to upgrade from my 16GB 5080 to a card with more VRAM at that point.

Note:  Someone above mentioned you have to use TLAA to get clear visuals in VR.  I personally get clearer visuals (less shimmering) and better performance using DLSS4 Quality.

Try REX Atmos to manage the haze, colors & washout of the sim.  Sorry I’m still on 2020 so maybe this is moot for ‘24 but I’m holding out.

Yes, the UI sucks on Atmos, but it’s the only tool I’ve tried that allows lighting, atmosphere & color tweaks in VR with changes appearing on the fly.  Much improved visuals.

G2 was the only headset I used until the PCL. Very happy with the upgrade, no issues here.

Open XR Toolkit companion has a range of colour, contrast and saturation settings, as well as three 'sunglasses' settings for when the scenery is washed out.  I have mine configured so the look of the scenery is very similar to my monitor.
