I followed the instructions and after several false starts got it working. Uninstall Xbox app, uninstall GamingService app (I did it via Start/Settings/Apps) restart PC. Reinstall from Microsoft Store

I would think it has to be an add-on as I use Alt-F4 to exit 2020, always have and don't have any shutdown problems...   Exclusively flying the 777 and 737 with FSHud

I've found it's more of an issue to hit esc, go back to the menu and exit than just alt-f4 out from the flightdeck.

Has this been confirmed with a vanilla installation?

Just tried Alt F4, didn''t work. Go into t ask manager, and MSFS is still running and using around 30% CPU

I had never used ALT F4 so just gave it a try.

MSFS2020 shut down but still running.

Same here, Alt F4 does not work.

Sorry Bob, that was all I had.  Used up my idea quota for the day and it's only 10:40am, gonna be a long day 😉

Someone posted this on the FS forum. I am going to try it on my next shutdown to see if it works.

In case this helps anyone, here’s what I did. I made a little batch (*.bat) file with this line

taskkill /F /IM FlightSimulator.exe

I put it on my desktop and click it after MSFS disappears. So far it seems to work pretty well.

That should be the same as going into task manager and doing an end task so it will shut it down but not help with why it isn't shutting down correctly and potentially corrupting files again.

Frustrating.

It's also interesting that it appears to unload a lot from memory and CPU load but then hangs on closing something down.  Going to take someone much smarter than me (not hard to find) to figure out what with the process is hanging though.

Well, maybe I didn't make the batch file right, but I just tried it and it didn't work.

Well I redid the batch file and now it works. Close down MSFS as normal and the run this .

@echo off

taskkill /F /IM FlightSimulator.exe

I saved it in notepad as    MSFSoff.bat

The batch file was discussed in a couple of posts on page 3 of this thread. It does work and I've pinned it to the task bar for easy access.

One thing I have now noticed is when using the batch file the TDS GTN750XI remains running in the background. That does not seem to be the case when using the Task Manager shutdown option.
I use Windows 11 in case that makes any difference.

Are we over this yet? If not, I have made a discovery that is 'just a little bit interesting'.

2020 of course.

1: Shut down in normal fashion.

2: Icon still remains in Task Bar.

3: Instead of heading off to Task Manager, complete shutdown via the .bat file provided previously.

4: Just using the .bat file used to result in a 'Safe mode of Normal dialogue box on the next startup.

But no more. 4 restarts on the bounce resulted in clean launches! 😮

I don't know about you, but I find that riveting. 😀

The issue is related to the 'Gaming services' app.

I can confirm - unistalling Game Services and XBOX App, restarting PC and installing XBOX App again fixes this issue. MSFS2020 MS Store version.

I tried on my system and it did not resolve the issue. Windows 11 Pro 24H2 26100.3915

Apparently there are many reports that once you update the 'Gaming services' from within the MS store the issue presents itself again. But it is definitely the 'Gaming services' as the culprit.

I followed the instructions and after several false starts got it working. Uninstall Xbox app, uninstall GamingService app (I did it via Start/Settings/Apps) restart PC. Reinstall from Microsoft Store (Just the XBox app) restart PC. Run Xbox app and it will/should update itself. Sorted.

That's what worked for me. Just sayin'

EDIT: Like Adrian said. 😛

Oh and kudos to “TenPatrol” who figured it out.
