Re the video.... forum rules don't allow me to comment. But I would say that any reasonable intelligent person would have the same opinion.

A 3 hour documentary from GN is very impressive.

Given the skyrocketing cost of video cards, especially those from Nvidia, computers are going to once again be something for universities, businesses, and the wealthy.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

The death of affordable computing? I think that we reached that point way before the tariffs appeared.

Yes this is a can of worms, however prices are dropping where I live due to a decline in electronics or consumer goods going to America leaves a surplus for other nations to purchase, as well fuel has dropped and our agriculture exports are increasing to Asia as markets adjust.
cause and effect has negatives for some and positives for others as we teeter along, I’m not worried about the price of electronics at this point

I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

Ignoring any politics involved, this is business.  For some of us, business is pretty cool.

I was watching a similar video yesterday from someone making a series of small baby care products that were manufactured in China. The situation for her was similar, and her sales price would have to double. She asked for comments with suggestions, and many people in manufacturing gave her some good ones... well worth reading. She covers the whole problem in a nutshell in an understandable manner.

I decided not to post the video at the time, but if requested I will. It's not three hours long. 🙂

I'm willing to wait and see what happens, as the current situation isn't tenable long term and will certainly change.

If this topic turns into another tariff debacle, don't expect it to be here for discussion much longer!

I'm too old to worry about it.  Just a spectator in the stands.  Puck said it best in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, "What fools these mortals be."

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

I'm not worried about this situation at all.  Some things may be a little more expensive for a while, but I guarantee that by the end of this year almost all will be back to normal.  Even better, the situation will be more fair.

The only people whining about the situation are 1)folks who make stuff for $20 in a sweatshop and then ship it across the ocean to sell at a 500% markup, and 2)some investors who cry like babies every time the market drops a few percent.

As with many other events and situation which have occurred over the years, the media is at it again with the fearmongering, scare tactics, and propaganda.

Consumers just need to be more savvy IMHO and evaluate ROI.

I paid $1400 for a 2080 ti founders editions card 6 years ago.   The founders edition MSRP's at $1,000, but I had to pay a premium as the founders edition was super rare and hard to get (I wanted FE as was easier to water block it at the time).

One day after the release of the 5080 I got one for $1199(pre-tariff pricing).

So I paid LESS for a 5080 6 YEARS later.

So honestly I can't complain.

I'll put thousands of hours into the 5080 like a I did for the 2080 ti.  I mean, that is gonna be less than .50 cents an hour of entertainment time for me.  Cheaper than a movie.

The 5080 is a BEAST btw (and so was the 2080 ti).

Yes when you break it down to what it’s worth to you this is where you see the value.

To be honest my latest AutoCAD machine back around late 80s or early 90s was an 80386DX with math coprocessor and Matrox video card which was around $10,000 in those days, plus the AutoCAD license was another $4000, adjusted for inflation that is $32,000 today. So to be honest we are paying a fraction of what we were paying for computers in the 80s and 90s even with the recent price adjustments.

i also don’t buy new cars my last purchase a few months ago was a 2006 Honda CRV for under $10,000, and i maintain it myself, the money I save I do buy and keep up with the latest gaming desktop and an adequate enough gaming laptop because this is where I spend most of my time not in a car. I’ve never broke down what my current computer spending works out an hour but probably around a dollar an hour including all hardware and software, easily justifiable

You may not be worried Dave, but there are some people I know, including myself, who are.  Retired seniors on fix incomes for whom 'a little more expensive' for you is 'a lot more expensive' for them.  For example, I like to eat half an avocado for lunch every day.  Two months ago they were well affordable.  A month ago they became just affordable.  Today I can't afford them and don't know if I ever will.  Just one more small luxury I will have to give up.

The impact on the car industry and many other products, isn't "a little" more expensive.

Nobody wins in a trade war and it makes no sense to alienate ones allies.
