Considering XP12

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

P3D v5.4 user here. I don't think I will completely get rid of P3D for now but would like to start my transition to another sim and just do not see myself going the MSFS route. I am hoping to hear thoughts on performance. Seems there is quite a bit of payware aircraft and scenery. I generally fly A320 for narrow body and 787/777 for my wide bodies. As you can imagine by my user name, I generally fly in and around Canada and seems there is a lot to offer for payware there as well.  I guess I should add, how is backwards compatibility for say using something from Xplane 11 for XP12, specifically the Payware CYYZ available on simmarket for xp10/11.

Is there anything kicking around similar to AIG for AI Aircraft?

Looking forward to reading the feedback.

Thank you,

Sean

  • Just to add to this topic, I bought and installed XP12 about 2 weeks ago.  Long time simmer (Sublogic FS days) and only tried XP a couple times as I mostly used MS versions and P3D once that came out.

Start clean. Do some flights. Than when you have it where you want. Backup the xplane folder. Than start adding addons.

Thank you for the response...For the 777 is there an ER and/or LR version? I cannot seem to find anything but the 200ER.

How is backward compatibility for any scenery made for xplane 11? will they work in xp12?

I'm not sure about that 🥴

As far as I know the FF 777 is the 200 ER. I don't own it so I can't say how well modelled it is.

If you're big into scenery fidelity, as with all the other sims, recent or updated software from a respected developer designed natively for the platform you want to use will provide the least number of disappointments.

The free user-supported Scenery Gateway offers a huge number of respectable airports in XP 11 & 12--so much so that I have had little want or need to buy sceneries for the platform.

My experience with mainly Orbx and other good quality v11 payware has been mostly positive in v12, but not 100%.

I haven't directly compared P3D performance to XP performance in quite awhile, but XP's v12's performance has been trending UPwards, and what we're getting in the latest Betas has been better still.

P3D v5.x was blazing vs XP v11, but with V12, I don't think about flying in P3D other than 2-3 favorite add-ons that are only available there.

Also, it's really nice not to need ActiveSky since realt Time weather and great looking clouds are native to XP.👍

some XP11 scenery works in XP12 like Flight beam KPDX , KTPA , Drzewiecki Design Seattle Airports etc

Agree lots of top Quality Airports but have to be prepared to download lots of different scenery Library's for them to work. I Recommend Xorganizer

As for aircraft,

Toliss buses is way ahead of FSL and runs much smoother (at least on my system).

however the FF777v2(Beta) still way to go compare to PMDG777 for P3D (it have more fancy function like maintenance and cabin, but basic flight function still not as good as PMDG).

forget about 787, I bought Magknight 787 thinking it can't be worse than QW, but it is.... much worse....

Actually my translation to XP11/12 is driven by trying different aircraft, A350, then 747-200, 727...... and now most of my fleet. so maybe you can start by try something else, free Zibo 737 would be a good start. And widebody airbus (Toliss339/346) would also be a nice starting point as it won't steep your learning curve by much if you already familiar with A320.

Hi Sean,

by reading your initial post I get the impression that you are an "add-on collector" and enjoy boosting and expanding your simulator with third party things. There is nothing wrong with that, just like with toy trains, some people like to collect dozens and dozens of locomotives, others enjoy driving the trains around their set. Just the way people work.

To be totally honest, you will probably cater to this need much better if you go with MSFS. It has a vastly larger add-on environment (the larger user base draws more devs to it) and X-Plane is more of a platform for the one that drives his trains, not the one that collects them.

As a first step I would suggest to download the free demo to get a feel for what you are looking at - the demo will also work with most add-ons, so you can get a few free sceneries and test if they suit you.

My personal advice is to not saddle the horse from the back, as we say in German. Start with the vanilla, unpimped simulator and then add stuff slowly and deliberately on a "need" basis, not on a "can have" basis. I run X-Plane without any addons except for a few aircraft, and I miss nothing. This comes with the added benefit of not screwing up your setup with incompatible or outdated add-ons before you even fire it up for the first time, as countless people do.

Incase you want to explore other areas.

Satisfy Boeing 737-800 curiosity with study level freeware Zibo 737!  There are also other variant available from LevelUP -600 -700 -800 -900.

For occasional GA itch freeware "X-Plane King Air C90B EVO, G1000 Blackhawk"

Most if not all scenery made for XP 11 works fine in XP12. You will loose some XP12 features such as wind and tree dynamics, possibly autogates (especially if they were configured for SAM) some other dynamics. The Gateway concept in this sim is a winner - I have always liked XP's capacity to have some keen simmers and developers the capacity to do this scenery airport building and publishing. As a result I have only paid for two major scenery addons since moving to XP from P3D. The rest are more than catered for as downloads or the sim itself - the default stuff is pretty word not allowed good none of that neglected empty look from FSX or P3D. Overall world wide textures or Landclass is pretty good but still hit and miss for some areas of the globe. Lot of folk go the Ortho route which is fine for those with the time and data capacity. Airports are excellent everywhere is what it is, slopes or other stuff like that properly catered for. If your going to addin stuff look at the default first - I do 90% of the time it is more than good enough and in some places (a lot) payware quality that is great realistically created environments and airports. The big pain for new XP users is getting used to making sure you have the relevant libraries a developer or scenery creator has used which they always list anyway. Over time you will get the important ones and the ones you need. A little payware program at the Org is X-Organiser worth the money (it is cheap) for managing and making the scenery in or out process pain free - otherwise you may struggle with layering and order location.

They have nailed cloud, weather sky and lighting so changes are in the offing for scenery. We shall see, above 2000 ft it all looks fine as you would want in a sim!

As for what and where - spoilt for choice really - very high fidelity sim models you wont find in other sims and lots of shall we say very high quality freeware or shareware developers doing all sorts of interesting aeroplanes for the sim.

Sim models for XP11 into XP12 - mostly you have to say NO too many coding changes to cause grief. Some older or more simple aircraft you may get away with it that is they will work but if it is complex or a jet no only get XP12 stuff. Lots of recommendations here already about that area - as they it is what floats your boat!
