MSFS 2020 SU16 (released 5 Aug 25)

Featured Replies

When this update was first released everything ran great for a couple of days, then on the 3rd day, it crashed (CTD) continuously on the "Fly" command.  As reported, I ran a Dism series and an sfc scan and for a couple of days all was well again.

A few days ago she began to crash again (12 times in a row on one day) before I was able to fly.  This time the sfc scan showed no issues.

Out of desperation I swapped out the driver I had been using for some time (576.28) and put in the new 580.97.  I normally don't change drivers until it's obvious there is an issue - I thought it was at least worth trying.  After installing the new driver the sim started up cleanly and has flown well for the last dew days.  Fingers crossed for now.

  • Hi folks, Yes, the issue that was formerly preventing MSFS (2020) from shutting down properly after exiting the sim and required manual executable termination from Task Manager is now resolved wi

  • I wish they would leave 2020 alone. It works fine now.

Because it's a server and client architecture.  Windows is not really a server and client architecture. You can use Windows without an internet connection. A lot of MSFS 2020 heavily depends on the se

I have found it only runs in dx12, if not it crashes, i updated to latest driver and it worked for a day or two, then last night it crashed again. I am just glad i had 900 odd hours in 2020 prior to this mess and that i never went near 2024.

I may just uninstall 2020 and be done with it.

What do you have against DX12?

I use DX12 in 2020 since years. At the beginning it had texture and stuttering issues, now it works well.

Increased VRAM usage?

Indeed, that's why I'm running DX11 with my older (8G) card.  If I had more VRAM, I'd be happy to run DX12.  That said...

I'm really curious as to why those with older cards keep playing the video driver update game.  As I understand things, newer drivers are almost entirely focused on the latest series and/or new game optimizations.  If you're running MSFS 2020 and a card that's a couple of generations old, well...

Haven't updated a video driver in quite some time, have no intentions of doing so until a new card enters my future and have an unbelievably stable, glitch free (and even more so by comparison to my last two sims) 2020.  When I see the "your latest game ready driver is available" message I smile and move on.

If you have a newer card, then yeah - I totally get it of course, though even with a newer card I'd be carefully reviewing the change logs to see if I'd get any real benefit.

I have been forced to run MSFS 2020 in DX12 mode since the PC reboot issues in DX11 mode started over a week ago. To be fair, it is running pretty well so far at the airports that I have tested (including Aerosoft EDDF Frankfurt), and I only have 6GB VRAM. I have been using the Nvidia 566.36 graphics drivers since the start of the year.

On a side note, that recent optimisation patch for Aerosoft EDDF Frankfurt has considerably improved the performance. Framerates were a real struggle near Terminal 1 prior to the update, but now I can taxi my plane relatively comfortably

I had a similar issue - it turned out that I had an issue with the RAM. The memory had been overclocked and after it was rest to be the normal timing, it was fine.

I would suggest that you  run the OCCT RAM + CPU test and see if there are any hardware problems.

I did the tests all is well.

I reverted back to driver 577

All is well.

I have a 5080 is this happening only on these newer cards?

Sorry didn't realise it was your Mum.

Look mate it would be nice to have the option and not having dx11 crash my game....too much to ask?

How defensive you are over dx12(beta) in MSFS...... like its your mum and not some non human thing in a computer game implemented as a beta, still, and badly IMO... forced to use it by total incompetence from ASOBO.

I purchased a phenomenal game all those years ago, got 900 hours out of it, mostly of pure wonderment and joy.... and progressively its got worse, to the point now where I'm going to uninstall it.... I've had a blast...

And maybe, i might grad 2024 in a sale.... maybe...

Just a quick note to say that SU16 has not resolved the "land bars" issue. Those two across the top end of Southampton Water (annoyingly right in front of my eyes on final approach to runway 02 at EGHI Southampton) are still causing havoc to shipping

Best Wishes,

Well after a couple of days of OK flying on the 580.97 driver all went to Hades.  I haven't been able to fly since the 20th (continuous crashing when clicking Fly).  All scans come back negative for any issues.  I even upgraded my BIOS - same issue.

Looks like I'll need to shut down the sim.  I'm preparing it for Windows 11 and want it running smoothly before installing 2024.

I'm not going to do the MS/ASOBO blame thing at this time - too many persons are running well on SU16, so it makes me think that it's something to do with my system.  I'm also concerned about my i9-14900KF Processor - I had to replace the original (under warranty) when the default settings in the BIOS improperly over-clocked it and eventually fried it (Intel's fault).  Even though they made corrections in the BIOS for this, this behavior makes me think that some damage may also have occurred with the new processor and it's chosen now to manifest.

Update... this one's a doozy.

Well, I'm not crashing anymore.  It turns out that the issue appears to have been the Longitude... not my system and not the majority of FS2020.

All of these crashes began a couple of days following the last updates.  I was in a series of flights with the Longitude (one of my favorites) when the crashes began.  No matter what changes/adjustments I made the sim would crash when I clicked "Fly".

I stopped flying for a few days out of frustration.  Yesterday I loaded up the Kodiak to see if I could fly and lo.. the aircraft spawned perfectly and everything went well.  I did another flight with the Kodiak and all was well.  On a hunch I loaded up the Longitude and CRASH.  Loaded up the CJ4 and it flew beautifully.  Tried the Longitude again and... CRASH.

So... I don't know if MS/ASOBO broke the Longitude with SU16 or if it's something specific to my installation, but all aircraft I've tried except the Longitude allow me to fly!

Do you have some mods for the Longitude installed ?

If so delete it or save it somewhere and try..

Do you tried without the whole community Folder to fly the Longitude ?

cheers 😉
