GPU 7800XT should I get a 4K monitor for MSFS 2024?

Featured Replies

Leaving aside the philosophical discussions and getting back to the OP's question, my graphics equipment is listed in the signature. I can get 60 fps out of the sim routinely flying the PMDG 777 with the graphics set to HDR and 4K. The image is simply outstanding even with this relatively modest system. Graphics settings are close to HIGH and I do use AutoFPS or the internal adaptive graphics settings. DLSS is set to AUTO.

What I don't use is third party airports or heavy AI traffic. I'm perfectly happy with the compromises.

Hope this helps.

This is ridiculous, self-congratulatory MISinformation. Buying a 4K screen is the LEAST important part of building a good gaming system. And your BAD advice will lead to lower satisfaction b

  • 7800XT is firmly a 1440/2k card.

  • Agreed.

FWIW when I decided to upgrade from 2K to 4K, I went from 32" to 42" (MiniLED, didn't want to deal with burn-in).

It definitely made my cockpit look bigger.

Yeah but there's a budget restraint...

In a short time you will want to have better. In the end it will cost you more. It's Mathematics.

4k is honestly probably too much for a 32 inch.  Things will be so small to fit on screen the tradeoffs are probably just not worth it.

This can be avoided by increasing the scaling factor to 150% or more in the Windows 11 display settings until the icons have the desired size, but fonts are still sharper than on 2K. Whether or not it's worth it is highly subjective, and then there's the added cost of more GPU power needed to render all the pixels, but DLSS / FSR upscaling can help with it.

My feeling is that the 7800XT is at the lower end for 4K, but it might still be ok, especially when making use of FSR.

What..? This isn’t like clothing.

Upgrading to 4k makes any subsequent upgrades to your pc components cost more, permanently to maintain the same level of performance. The same goes going from 1080p to 2k/1440p. Budget is very much a constraint here regardless if you want better.

Cant decide if the performance will be good because if I have to dial down settings what point is there in going 4k?  Currently my 2K 32 inch monitor runs well with high game settings.

I agree with the advice to stick with 2K. IMHO, I'd way rather have higher graphics settings than more pixels. As you said, what's the point of increased screen resolution just so you can better see the lowered graphics effects! 😁

Also, don't forget that CPU is always the primary driver of your FPS. Adding a new graphics card always helps, but it's really easy to choke your CPU on supporting 4K.

I have the 7800XTX card 24gb. Great card for 4K.

Well heck, now I cant decide with the conflicting advice...par for the tech course I suppose...

Go with the 7900x I'd say.  Best price performance ratio IMO.

Negative, budget forces me to stay with my current 7800XT.

The question is will it run 4k on a 32 inch well.

No. This is the most agreed on answer. I only observed one person on the thread pushing you to get oled+4k.

Apart from the card being inadequate grunt force (GPU processing power) wise there is the pesky new issue of more VRAM required in MSFS2024 and going 4k would only exacerbate the issue as higher resolution has a higher VRAM requirement.

Speaking for myself who used to have a 6800XT (The 7800XT was not even an improvement to my card in any sense which is why i skipped it altogether) i stayed well clear of going for 4k because my card and the 7800XT were optimally designed for 1440p and if you want to push the issue 3440x1440 Ultrawide.  If you really want to do 4k on these cards it will do so.... Sub optimally .. you will have to go with the expectation that you will be turning down a few settings and more than likely adjusting the resolution down. For you.. that may be an ok compromise. For me i prefer to buy the stuff that works optimally with room to push if  desired.

The other factor at hand here is us not knowing the rest of your system specs to even get an understanding as to whether your proposed purchase will fit into your system balanced appropriately to the rest of your system or is this purchase going to make the entire system unbalanced one way or the other.

Considering you mentioning sticking to budget and already writing off the 7900XTX which has the grunt and 24GB of VRAM to properly do 4k i think the advise of most on here regarding to the capabilities of the 7800XT is correct. Good for 1440p .. not optimal for 4k.

Here is a link to a decent review if in doubt. Right there in the intro it gives you the target resolution for the card.

Also here is a more specific MSFS2020 charting of the card's performance vs its contemporaries at all resolutions at stock ultra settings.

Hope this makes things clearer for you.

Cheers

I run 1080p on my 32" and it is great.  On a 43" use 1440.

Hmm, sounds like 4K is not for the plebes...thanx, I will abandon the 4K concept.

For flightsim it literally doubles what is visible on screen.  More visible cockpit, greater peripheral view and more scenery visible on the same real estate.   The issue is in order to do that on a 32 inch monitor things need to become very small.  As others have said there are things you can do for scaling however if you are using the monitor for anything other than gaming it's actually going to annoy you more than please you LOL.  Then there are the performance considerations as well.

So there are definite tradeoffs but I ran 4K on a 34 inch for years just for flightsim.

Have a Wonderful Day
