The change log for the MD11 update is pretty long; it’s quite a substantial update.

$5 USD, the price of an actual cup of coffee at Starbucks in the US. Good on TFDI for a reasonable upgrade fee to MSFS 2024.

  • Hi all, we're happy to announce that the long-awaited Art, FS2024, and Extended Sim update for the MD-11 will release on 12JAN26 at 1600 GMT. We'll be here in Discord to chat and address anything

Well, $5 here is closer to the price of two coffees😝 After that, only three planes left before I can remove MSFS2020, but all of them are default.

Is the TFDI MD-11 worth the price in 2026 or not

Absolutely! - particularly after the last update, the state of MD11 has changed quite a lot. Although not quite your typical PMDG addon - it still has good amount systems simulation to keep you busy. With $5 extra you can add extended simulation option which includes failures/maintenance management which if you are looking for full immersion then highly recommended. A proper true cargo hauler - if you enjoy cargo operations then MD11 will certainly not disappoint you. Most challenging part of MD11 flying is landing - very tricky to handle and if you have crosswinds to deal with then that makes it for some interesting sporty approaches.

Did I say she was the most reliable?

Well the dishonour goes to her of being the first aircraft were I witnessed the new WASM Crash behaviour, with the screens all going orange and showing a warning message.

It happened as I was looking at the Config Page, that showed me which tires were blown as they were being repaired by maintenance. (I had a mishap yesterday after landing when I was taxiing in and accindently activated the autothrust and frantically tried to bring her to a stop. Which ended with me veering off the end of the apron at Cologne and blowing all tires. (And no, there is no visual represantation of that kind of damage).

My experience with the TFDi MD11 has been excellent. This new release puts it almost on par with PMDG. Your mileage may vary.

Is the MD11 very similar to the MD88

Not at all.

I’m so glad to hear about the favorable impressions about the updated version of this MD-11…from the actual user here…always have believed in these more than the external so-called (expert) reviews…🙂

I recall, I had got the TFDi 717 as soon as it had come out, the developer had come out of nowhere and surprised us. Since MSFS2020, I have been hoping for them to bring out a good MD-11….with the past memories of that often repeated and immensely enjoyable  (EGLL-LSZH) PMDG MD-11 Tutorial flight nearly forgotten…🙂

To this non-RW pilot, the similarity between the cockpit avionics of the B-717 and the MD-11 was so strikingly similar…due to the Boeing acquisition of the McDonnell Douglas. The MD-11 was also so different from the other MD series a/c, almost as if it could have survived to this day with continued modernization…

Anyway, it looks like TFDi is finally delivering on this one after their problematic first lease. This product will now only keep getting better.

Such a remarkable Trijet for our new SIM…!

Enjoy…if you own it…

I think the implementation of handling characteristics in the MD11 is similar to Leonardo MD82/83/88, as opposed to the handling like PMDG aircraft or iFly Max. What I mean by that is that taxiing behavior (nosewheel skid, smoothness of turn initiation are smoother and seem realistic); roll and pitch changes are smoother like the MD8x, unlike the abruptness exhibited by the PMDG aircraft.

Hi Ron:

As pointed out, the MD-11 features more advanced avionics, completely different from what you might recall from your MD-80 series SIM experience…

You might say that the MD-11 is similar to the (later) MD-90 series (at least avionics wise), with MD-95 rebranded as B-717, by Boeing. Of course, one was a trijet vs. the other been a twinjet.

The MD-11 was the final modernization effort by MD to break out of its legacy avionics philosophy…to keep up with Boeing and Airbus, and it was a good one indeed. It even flew years before the 777, but we know which one prevailed…🙂

i think the TFDI MD-11 is one of the very best addons available for MSFS at the moment. certainly in the class of "you can't go wrong"-type purchases IMHO.

I just thought about this after flying her again. If she had been designed as a two engine aircraft, I bet she would not only have surivived, she would have seen further refinements.

I'm disappointed by the fact that you have full nose wheel authority with the rudder pedals, although I have a tiller hardware for that. This is not real behavior and it turns me off. The steering on the runway at takeoff and landing is not optimal. I know this isn't a problem to most people, but it is for me.

I like it visually. The flight deck atmosphere is very nice, external model too. Let's see how it matures.

cheers,
NiIs U.

True, Farlis,...my thought too...it would have been so nice...🙂...

However, in such corporate acquisitions and mergers...if there were two twin-jet long-hauls in simultaneous production and competing with each other...the one by the controlling entity...would likely prevail...🙂...just way the (smaller) B-717 vanished from production...

Anyway, the MD-11 was a truly innovative and pioneering airliner of its time, no doubt about it...

Even w/o PMDG in the picture for it (wish it were), as aviation enthusiasts, we're lucky to have this one in MSFS...

I wouldn't be so sure about that. In the end it is not what the manufacturers want but what the customers buy.

If operating costs had been more favourable in a theoretic 2 Engine MD-11, she would have prevailed on those merrits. Because that is what matters to airlines the most. How much does it  does cost to fly these things and how quickly they are available when looking for an aquisition.

Pretty much the fate of all aircraft that had too many engines these days. A340, A380, all on their way out because of the higher fuel and maintenance costs per engine.

It would not have succeeded.

You must realize that the airframe+wing was a thing from the late 60s by the time it entered into service in 1991.

Twin Engine or not, it would still be the least viable option between the B777 and A330 family. It had no growth potential carrying that legacy design into the 90s and 2000s. Zero.

MDC cut every corner possible with the MD11, not because they wanted to, but their fiscal situation did not allow for anything else.
