I noticed in the comments section iniBuilds saying they chose to go exclusively with the marketplace because of piracy.

We won't know until it releases, but their lead has said it will be cheaper than the A350.

They released a free scenery for that runway last week.

That and so Xbox users could get it same day as PC.

I really doubt ini is going to outright say what it is, same reason Rockstar isn't going to outright say why GTA V was on consoles exclusively until 2 years later.

We do know that this exclusivity greatly benefits Asobo and encourages growth in FS24 and more usage of the marketplace.

This move doesn't suddenly improve margins because pirates aren't going to suddenly buy it on the marketplace, they pirate the product because they didn't intend on buying it in the first place.

Which is a weird reason, because they have full control over when to release something on their own store. They could have aligned releases in the past, if they wanted.

Of course they won‘t tell the real reason, but I guess it‘s some deal with Microsoft.

Absolutely agree. Somebody who don't want to pay for something won't suddenly do it, this is wishful thinking. Piracy will always exist, IIRC the marketplace stuff was already decrytped at some time. Maybe it's safe for some time, not forever. And these things (marketplace only to avoid it) may even motivate certain individuals to see if it's doable.

They did say that. https://discord.com/channels/535246634448191499/535249224254619648/1423790827704156170

Marketplace is mainly for a few reasons:

  • Allow our Xbox users to enjoy Day 1 as with PC,
  • We want to trial the 2024 Marketplace protection against piracy,
  • We have suffered immensely with the A350 and piracy.

I didn't deny that they said something, I said I doubt ini will outright say what it is. The actual reason companies do exclusivity deals for.

Being marketplace exclusive isn't a precursor to allowing this. They can just as easily release on marketplace day 1 for Xbox and still be on the iniManager.

I could've sworn the marketplace was already decrypted, I know 2020 was but I'm happy to be corrected.

You can't use piracy as a metric for lost sales because pirates weren't going to buy in the first place. A pirated copy of a product doesn't equate to a potential sale. There's a multitude of reason why someone pirates and none of them can be reliably measured. Just because you see 100 downloads on a link of a pirated product doesn't mean all 100 downloads were potential sales, they could've been downloaded for a multitude of reason.

I agree with this, but INI at least has a means of tracking some of the pirated copies. They said a while back that they have the email address of people who upload the plane. Presumably, as long as people who download it are INI customers they can probably use INI manager to suss them out.

That said, as much as I was anti them putting it on the MP, with the streaming component of the MP in 2020 I am actually thinking of buying more from there.

I often forget that piracy is still an issue, sadly.

I would assume the 2024 marketplace likely has an updated encryption system.

Experimenting with marketplace first will probably allow them to get a better sense of the impact. I don't think we can exactly say someone that uses a pirated copy was not going to buy anyway. Ease of access could play a role.
