Black Square Dukes or Starship

Featured Replies

Seeing that Just Flight is having a sale I am debating between the BS Dukes bundle or the Starship.

What are your opinions on these addons?

Both must haves; there seems more community support for the dukes. ALL BlackSquare products are top-notch.

If you have to pick one or the other, I honestly think you would fly the Dukes more.

Starship!
Dukes are just ... planes

Both the Dukes and the Starship are really well executed, both in terms of modelling, systems, flight dynamics, and sound. So if you're trying to decide what to get, it depends more on what you're looking for.

Looking for a classic pressurized twin, with familiar systems and avionics that you'll quickly feel comfortable with and a choice of piston or turbine power? Get the Dukes.

Looking for a unique experience, an airplane designed by an aviation genius that almost became the future, that makes you feel like you're Michael Knight getting into KITT, with one-of-a-kind avionics and systems that you'll spend hours and hours studying? Get the Starship!

Can't decide? Toss a coin. Whichever way it comes up, you won't regret it.

Great. Thank you for all the input. I’m leaning towards the Starship.
I owned the Dukes in P3D and they were a lot of fun.

Time to try something different and challenging.

Definitely The Starship...

Such a unique aircraft and there is something about the handflying incredible...

@Samaritano

I have the Turbine Duke. GREAT addon.

I haven’t yet pulled the trigger on the Starship due simply to its rather uncommon systems and TBH, very long takeoff roll.

I agree entirely with @martinboehme’s assessment: the Starship is definitely different, and if Different is what you’re looking for, it’s the right choice of the two.

Good as the Realair Dukes were in P3D (I put a lot of hours on them there too), the Black Square versions are even better, just so you know.  Just finished a flight with the Turbine Duke into a small airport in the middle of nowhere Kentucky and as usual, thoroughly enjoyed my flight.  I'm always impressed with how little runway the Turbine Duke requires.

Can't argue with much of the advice already given, however.  Guess it depends on whether you want a pair of tried and true workhorses that fill a lot of roles or want to take a bit of a walk on the wild side and experience a one of a kind piece of history.

No wrong answers here, that's for sure!

I have both but the Starship gets criminally neglected compared to the Dukes.  The Starship is amazing but with it's unique systems (especially entering and managing the flight plan!), a flight in it is more of an occasion.  Thus, I fly it occassionally!    The text on the 14 screens is very '80s' and I have to be in a certain mood to choose that, over the beautiful mostly analogue panel on the Dukes.

The Dukes are more versatile and I prefer their mission overall.

Go for either (or preferably both, when funds allow).   All Black Square aircraft are top tier / amazing.

Love the Dukes. Mostly the turbine version. Starship is cool but must watch YT and the manual because its a head scratcher. Fun planes.

An impossible choice haha!

Turbine duke climbs the fastest to FL250.  But it's generally capped there if you're trying to fly realistically. (Oxygen stuff). VNE is 198 kias so the higher the better in the turbine.

The Piston duke (grand duke) is slightly faster than the turbine below maybe 8000 or so.  It's got a lot of character too.  It's turbocharged and is happy in the 15k-FL210 range irl.

The Starship is super niche and as you may know very few real flying ones are left.  The Starship is the fastest of the three, cruise speed around 320 ktas or so.  But it can go to FL410 where you might find a stronger tailwind than in the high 20s.  (Mid 30s probably more typical cruise altitude).  It has some older navigation stuff (many like that).

But the dukes support the major 3 avionics (PMS/TDS/WT GNS all with crossfill) along with (I think) the KLN90B or even a old clunker only radio setup.

I'd buy all of them!  Oh sounds are superb on all as well.

I ended up picking the Dukes. Thanks for all the feedback.

I just got MSFS2024 yesterday and I’m still setting it up. I have to watch a few videos on how to setup controllers.
