787-9 Dreamliner for FS24 - Project Griffin Announcement

I think different people have different ideas on what a "dirty" or "factory fresh" cockpit looks like, whether they like the idea of one or not. I'd argue most people have the same preference – they want to be immersed in the environment and feel like there's detail there.

Personally I always prefer a "worn" cockpit, but to me that doesn't mean it looks like a bear got loose in it. What I don't like is poor texturing, or rather one that's not utilised to its potential. PMDG 737 is one example – sure it's brand new, but just doesn't feel like it has a soul to it. Even in their promo shots it looks like an illustration of the environment, one lacking detail, rather than the genuine thing. The newer version is an improvement but overall that's my one bugbear with an otherwise great product. Fenix is the perfect example of what I consider factory-fresh done right. Sure, it's clean, but it also feels authentic. There's so much nuance to every surface that it feels real.

One example I give of my ideal "worn" cockpit is the JF A300. I'd say it's overall clean but represents its age, definitely has soul to it. Again, I think it's about detail and the way each material is treated with nuance.

What I'm trying to say, I think we are all saying the same thing in a way. It's more about authenticity, quality, detail rather than levels of damage. Clean does not mean flat, just like worn does not mean trashed.

"All Paths Lead to FSWeekend, see you there!" We couldn’t resist sharing a small sneak peek. Here’s a glimpse of the systems depth currently taking shape behind the scenes. There’s a lot going on

  • Interesting. I'm always cautious when new dev groups appear and try not to get overly excited. Devs like Aerodynamic's, Bluebird and Synaptic Sim come to mind. Still waiting, but hopeful. Wishing

I’ll say this where I’ve said it other places, the ini A340 EIS1 cockpit is the best in the game IMO.  It’s stunning to look at, especially at night.

Very soft, very inviting.  I can’t wait to see what the L1011 looks like.

The ATRs we fly are grimy and worn out, but they’re not littered with garbage or anything like that.  They’re dusty, with dirt in recesses

I think if someone actually took a swab of an airliner flightdeck  and analysed it for bacteria and germs we’d be in breach of various environmental health laws for sat eating our dinner up there.

Yeah there’s definitely a reason why I’m always sick after two weeks of work haha.

I mean if there are ways to give the user options without turning it into months of extra work to make it look good, I'm all for it.

But realistically longhaulers basically never stand still to remain profitable. So the constant use, by multiple crews will make even the newest aircraft look used pretty fast. Not to mention that the avionic fans blow the dust everywhere.

So a pristine looking flightdeck fresh out the facttory is something you will see for maybe a week after delivery and during initial testing. But as soon as it goes onto the line it's over for shiny.

I absolutely prefer a cockpit and exterior with some realistic wear. If it is possible, a slider in the EFB that can change the amount of wear would be ideal.

Having seen the presentation from FSWeekend as well as a couple of interviews with the developer lead Ellie, I am pretty positive and hopeful with this 787. They are clearly very invested in and enthusiastic about the project, and I hope it will turn out to be an awesome labour of love. If it is anything close to the pretty high expectations set by the presentation when it is released, it will be a day 1 purchase for me. 😀

It's a Boeing, so I should be able to fly it. That's good enough for me

Don't worry, I promise I won't tell you that most dust in enclosed work spaces is mostly human skin...

I'll GLADLY take that instead of vomit or a leaky diaper in the pax cabin... 😁
Once I had to make a bit of a fuss over assigned seats that CLEARLY had damp residue on them. Thankfully, the flight wasn't full and the Purser was able to accommodate.

Yes the cabins get some real abuse alright, however it gets sanitised by an army of cleaners after every landing, they don’t do the flight deck.

Yes they’re generally quite clean, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say “sanitized” (in the medical sense).

and they’re undoubtedly under time constraints, too.

The flip side is that after half a century of riding in the back, that was the only time I personally had an unacceptable problem. 👍

The joke during COVID was “now we clean cabins like people always thought we did!”
