MSFS 2024 Sim Update 5.1 released now...

Great, this completely trashed my performance. Before the update I was pegged at 60 fps, now I can hardly get high 40s. Cleared caches etc., emptied community folders, updated dlss etc. and it's not going well for me :-(

I think you should go back and check your graphic settings. With this last update 1.7.3.5, It changed all my graphic settings that I tweaked over the years back to Asobo default settings. Not sure why they make these updates screw up your settings but all my settings changed. Lucky I keep a copy of my user.cfg on a separate drive, but there were some changes to the graphics UI, probably why everything was set back to default.

  • I love it. It is like I just went to the optometrists! I can see palm trees as they should look, little or no melted buildings either. A huge improvement for me.

For me, the object culling when changing views which was introduced with SU4 then largely fixed with SU5 is now back again with 5.1 ☹️

It has always been the same for me since SU4. It never got any better with SU5 as I don't think they changed anything to do that.
It can just appear better sometimes depending on the various aircraft and scenery in use.
I have found steam gauge aircraft perform the worst for me. I love to fly the Piper Dakota but not really touched it since SU4 other than to test at each update - in hope!

I don't fly much these days anyway, mainly due to this issue, but I keep holding out hope they can reverse / fix the issue.
Apparently it is by design rather than a bug, but I don't understand why MS / Asobo don't see it. It is all over YouTube with the various content creators every time they chance view from inside to outside and back again. Some actually video edit a fade in/out or edit it out completely now in the videos.

I've stopped trying to understand this bunch, their lacklustre attention to issues is something I just cannot fathom at all. Yet again they made a massive regression in SU5 with a bug for VR users, they failed to fix it when it was reported & logged then they had another opportunity to fix it during this beta but.....nothing 🤷 Guess we'll have to wait until SU6 to see if they've bothered to notice their own mistake as it's completely pointless reporting bugs any more.

I accepted long ago that they're just "different" from other regular gaming/simulation software developers, but I still get completely bemused at their approach each & every update. We just need to accept they're simply not very good at some things, but they'll never admit to their own failings which after 6 years suggests they'll never properly improve in the areas they need too.

Anyway, aside the obvious much needed Stability & Performance fixes for console users there's nothing in this small update for me personally in the patch notes - I just cross my fingers they've not broken something else, just like every other SU release - rinse & repeat.

Performance for me is still good, been in the beta the whole time, I'd say this release is a touch better on performance. But man they need to do something about the clouds and weather. One view looks great, look another direction and its a total mess.

Yes, I know what you mean. I have not had good experiences myself either, and I have had a few questions batted away by Martial in the Twitch sessions. The one where we were all getting tile bleed through at airports was pushed away with 'well, the world is a big place'. Ultimately some who had joined the twitch session convinced Jorg to push Martial to take another look at the issue, otherwise it would have just been left.

And then you get the usual guardians shouting you down, or belittling the issues anyway. It makes you want to give up.

On the regressions, it seems they have slightly different teams doing different SU's at different times from what I can gather.
So one team might be on say SU5 using SU4 as a base, and another working further ahead on SU6, using SU4 as a base as well (as it is all they have at that stage). so then, sometimes better code from SU5 gets missed for inclusion in SU6. That is the only way I can figure out the regressions, but ultimately it is down to poor quality control, as we have known for quite some time now.

This is the main issue, yes. Some areas are much worse than others. I flew over Los Angeles early this morning and it was very noticeable but then over London after that in the same aircraft where it was actually pretty good. But it is certainly worse with 5.1 for me, I never really noticed it any more after SU5 so it was a shock to see it back again.

It is also very bad with any steam gauge Carenado aircraft for some reason so I would not choose the Dakota (or any of them) any more.

I see no reason to expect it to change with SU6 as the focus has so obviously shifted away from PC users so, I think you have to learn to live with it or do something else.

One aspect of weather that annoys me the most is the flat cloud base. Surely not all clouds are as flat as a pancake at the base? The clouds can look really nice (despite the textures being fuzzy, which is probably a limitation of the voxel method with which they are generated), but I really hate seeing that uniform flat underside whenever I am ascending into them (or descending below them). It just feels unrealistic.

Can anyone tell me why it's so difficult for Asobo not to have proper windscreen effects ie. raindrops not being cleared with the wiper blades in PMDG 737? (don't know about other AC) Is it something to do with the SDK? Is it a PMDG issue? It has been reported for years now, back in 2020 too, still nothing is resolved. I seem to remember them saying, unless I'm mistaken, many SUs back that they were going to sort it out, but here we are and still don't have it. sad Now, call me an old cynic, but I have come to fathom out a tactic, not necessarily with Asobo or MS, but.... I believe certain things are left untouched so that they can mend it in a new product version, that way it's a great incentive for customers to buy into the new platform. I've seen it in mobile phones, cameras and in particular, DJI drones. You can call me an old cynic if you like. wink

True about the steam gauge Carenado's that's for sure.

It is disheartening, but MSFS is still the best sim we have I think.
I just wish they could knock some of the sharp edges off and I would want to fly a lot more.

You're an old cynic! 😄

You should have an 'Old Cynic' T-shirt made for our upcoming UK flight sim meet, if it happens - I hope so.
Although, if that picture of you is accurate, I will need one made out as 'The Older Cynic' for me. 🙃

Yes, because the Fenix has great wiper effects.

No, the focus is equal across all platforms.

They've dumbed it down on all platforms? I didn't know that.

Mh, i flew the PMDG 737-600 yesterday and the wipers cleared the windsheeld, the raindrops were gone...although the area is perhaps a little bit too small and more to the bottom-center of the windsheeld. Will check this again, but i am pretty sure, it was not just imagination :)

I feel like cloud bases are fairly uniform. I've spent many of my working days staring at the skies from the control tower. Obviously there are times they aren't like during thunderstorms where you have a huge overhang perhaps with mammatus underneath

Here's a timelapse from NM showing cloud growth (scroll down the page a little). They all seem to have a semi flat base. Maybe not 100% perfectly flat, but still pretty flat imo

That's why we have pireps with clouds tops and bases in aviation. Cloud bases are almost always fixed, whereas tops will be ragged or variable tops as expected. I actually don't like when bases are more rounded in the sim... it's almost like the design of the cloud is inverted - I've seen that a few times. IMO that's a bug and no realistic. Most clouds do have a general flat-ish base to them.
