Another performance topic. Need advice. 2024

Featured Replies

Guys, I am facing some "performance" issue since SU5. Before the update everything was great. I fly exclusively in VR. After the update I started getting warning that GPU exceeds its limits and must lower the settings. I also saw info that the sim reinstallation could fix the problem. I reinstalled the sim. But the issue still presents.... GPU exceeds its limits and much more staggers than it was before the SU5.

Meanwhile I see many posts that the performance is much better than it was before.... I waited for the SU5.1 assuming that it will improve the things. But what's interesting that when the SU5.1 came out I did not have any update info and there was nothing to download. I saw posts that there should have been 2GB+ download. But in the release notes in the sim I see 5.1 version....

Maybe you can tell me what could go wrong that the sim lacks GPU resources? Maybe there are some settings I must pay attention at?

Just use AutoFPS. In my opinion it's needed for a problemfree VR experience.

theres a video about this - https://youtu.be/if6BNhtwIH0?si=S3jIwsUcA90W3uka

A few of us have had this issue since the recent update, numerous posts on here, youtube, reddit and the forumns.

The kids want high frames not stability, so there you go, asobo have given what us the customer base wants.

Long frames (or what ever its called) popping autogen and framegen tomfoolery and some hype and pizaz. Alas with it comes stutters and bad proformance unless you have a 4080 or 5080.

So the new gammers can take lots of "cool hd screenshots" using there 8K stutter fest repaints and then post them all over discord and reddit before jumping back onto fortnite for a couple more rounds of deathmatch..

The markets changed, Its not a niche older mans simmers market anymore

Its a gamers market and they looooooove high frames, hype, and twitch and couldnt care less about stutters.

Heaven forbid you question, critise or complain anything about ms24 the normal gate holders will pop along and tell you how great it is.

As ive often said. In my opinion - its a modern day "Getty Kouros"

I think another good example is the upcoming release of a new game called "hell let loose vietnam" Something I was really interested in getting. In short was meant to release in June, they put it out to the market as a beta which exposed some issues, so they delayed it until August. A good honest sensible decesion. Now had that of been in this community and a flightsim product from NUMEROUS Devs, that wouldnt of never of happened, They would of just released it and patched it afterwards. aka KATL, INI 350, MS24, Aersoft A330, EDDF.. the list goes on,

That there is the difference in my opinion of a good dev verses a bad dev.

https://www.hellletloose.com/blog/hell-let-loose-vietnam-release-date-update

"The additional development time will allow the team to focus on improving performance, stability and overall gameplay quality ahead of launch."

Thanks for the feedback. I just don;t understand why some have no problems in performance at all, even praise the sim, but others, like me, suffer... Of course, different systems, but what exactly could cause the downgrade in performance in my case - this is a big question....

I assume you already done all the required clean ups before or after the update, if you already did it wouldn't hurt of doing it again, also I strongly suggest that you open NCP and reset your MSFS2024 settings to default then reconfigure it back to your liking again, things should look and act better (I hope).

Good luck.

FWIW I was having massive stuttering issues and watched a bunch of youtube videos with little success. In frustration, I went to Google AI and detailed what type of flying with examples of what aircraft, scenery and addons and then provided my current configuration of CPU, GPU, Windows, Monitor, Nvidia App, Auto_FPS and MS2024. AI came back with a digest of where I had conflicting settings and suggested action plan. AI's references were to Redditt, YouTube and the like. To be clear, this was not a one and done consultation because AI is certainly capable of providing conflicting advice (e.g. where/if to cap frame rates) but I stayed with it and kept adjusting and testing to where I finally have a performance that is decent.

Google AI for help? Give me a break. Like one poster said earlier, delete your old user.cfg and restart 2024 and let it reset and build a new one. Then tweak your graphic settings to your liking. Don't try to run everything at Ultra settings

I'll have a peep at my settings and make a note of the ones that, especially for VR, may be adversely affecting the performance. I say that because MS have a habit of reverting certain settings back to 'Default' during their major updates...and 'Default' always means the default for 2D.

One I can think of straightaway is 'Photogrammetry' - which they seem to always turn back on but which, certainly on my system, creates a stutterfest in VR. I know there are others - I'll have a look when I get a moment and see if there are some obvious ones you might want to check.

Photogrammetry has never been automatically enabled on my PC after an update in either MSFS 2024 or MSFS 2020. I am also getting very good performance with a 12GB RTX 4070 Super GPU, even in super dense scenery areas like London. In fact, the number of stutters anywhere seems to have reduced significantly since the SU5.1 update.

@zorro747 I think to avoid confusion, you would be better reposting your question in the "Virtual Reality (VR) for Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020/2024)" subsection of this forum. Recommended graphics settings are so, so different between 2D and VR that I think you will get a quicker and more focussed answer there.

AutoFPS

  • FPS Target set to Auto

  • Enable Expert Settings

    • TLOD Min 100, TLOD Max 200

    • Leave everything else alone

MSFS

  • Dynamic Settings Target 35Fps (Assuming your VR Headset is set to 72hz otherwise half your refresh rate, rounded)

  • Terrain Level of Detail - 100

  • Object Level of Detail - 100

I have a stutter free experience with a Quest 3, 5800X3D and 7800XT.

There are two things which I believe are usually more sensible then reinstalling msfs, if you have the store edition.

1) xbox | msfs2024 | 3 dots | manage | files | verify and repair. That should take under 1/2 a minute to complete.

OR

2) If you are not in the beta, then join the SU6 Beta. This will install all new files and keep your settings. But instead, if you are in the SU6 Beta, then unjoin the Beta. This will also install all new game files and keep your settings. And then you can just rejoin the beta if you want to fly in the beta.

In my experience, 1 and 2 are about equally effective. But 1 is infinately faster. So 1 is what I do if I have such issues as in this thread.

(Sometimes doing 2 will change your options settings in msfs2024. Not usually but sometimes. Which is another reason that 1 is the best first move if you have the store edition).

First off go to flightsim.to and download the app that hides that nonsense message (forget the name, Hide something, not at my PC). That message is largely redundant and ill programmed so better off ignored.

Secondly as per AutoFPS advice above (highly recommended) although it will help, there has been a reduction in performance for me since SU5 was released, I'm also using VR so am particularly alerted to performance fluctuations, SU4 was better overall.

Pico Neo3 Link VR - Windows 11 64bit, Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Elite Mobo, i7-10700KF CPU, Gigabyte RX 9070 XT OC 16gb (AMD GPU), 32gig Corsair 3600mhz RAM, SSD x2 + M.2 SSD 1tb x1

Saitek X45 HOTAS - Saitek Pro Rudder Pedals - Logitech Flight Yoke - Homemade 3 Button & 8-directional Joystick Box, SNES Controller (used as a Button Box - Additional USB Numpad (used as a Button Box)

One thing that has helped me (but a lesson I have to keep re-learning) is to 1) not get too aggressive on settings including screen resolution and 2) At least on my modest rig, NOT fill up the base sim with a bunch of airport add ons or boats or whatever.

I’d love to come screaming into KBFI in Seattle with all of the Drzweicki sceneries loaded and very high resolution and a bunch of AI ships motoring around - but I HATE stutters.

I’d rather glide in smoothly and stutter free than anything else, and on my PC that means “Keep it Simple” community folder-wise AND I found both AI and YouTube settings videos very helpful - then test a tough scenario (LA area, Seattle, etc) for smoothness.

now just to throw another spanner into works.

Sim was working completely fine until the little hotpatch after su5. Then no matter what i did it caused stutters, unplayable.

I normally run at 120 hertz, I used to do the recommended 45fps and FG X2 to get it to 90fps and on my 5070ti with quite medium settings. rebar off - like I said worked fine , I also use aerotune (not autofps) and one could say it was working perfectly more or less........until that 5.1 patch,

I spend the best part of the weekend trying EVERYTHING to get it to play with no joy. So at the point of reinstalling i took one last punt and but su6 beta on and tried that. Again no dice, it kind of worked vsync on to match the 120 hertz but I had to use FG X3 with a target 40 - hence being 40x 3=120.

the FGx 3 on my 5070ti was causing terrible latency issues, so i spend hours and hours trouble shooting to no joy.

Finally a link popped up for a recommended video on youtube for "smooth motion" which I never heard of - so a then a search of "smooth motion" lead me here - and this answer here - https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/smooth-motion-for-rtx-40xx-50xx-worth-it-for-msfs-testing-and-impressions/734426/28

So i now do the following

1.run the monitor at 120 hertz

2.(Adaptive half refresh rate),which means it will sync at 60Hz.

3.lock frames using riva tuner to 60 fps

  1. Turn off FG gen in the sim, and use DLSS QUALITY ON PRESET M

Put on smooth motion in Nvidia Inspector it happily syncs at 60 fps - with some head room to spare and its smooth as can be (so far)

alas Ive not heard of smooth motion, but after hours and hours of fiddlling around its seems to of worked. fingers crossed.
