Will it be possible to observe the total solar eclipse on the 12th of this month from MSFS 2024?

If so, perhaps, we could also see if the size of the Moon and the Sun is accurate (which has generated some controversy in forums).

Why do you have to ask this?

Just look up the path of the Eclipse, spawn into the sim in its path and set time and date accordingly and find out yourself.

I do recall during the 2024 total eclipse people were able to see the effects, though if I recall correctly you don’t get the cool corona effect visually, I think it’s more just the light level dropping and you see a chunk of the sun missing.

It also casts a very visible shadow

It’s not perfect, it doesn’t seem to align with every eclipse

Why does he have to ask this? Because it's a forum. It's Avsim. It's a place for us all to get together and chat about stuff. John shouldn't have to justify a question, no matter what it is.

Hey John, thank you for posting that, I didn't remember such things could also be seen in the sim !

I couldn't resist trying in advance. After checking the eclipse schedule in my local town (LFMN) I found that the eclipse would happen between 19:30 and 21:15, so I have setup a free flight during that time window, and guess what ? Yes it is visible ! :)

The '24 eclipse went right over me, complete totality. People drove here from hundreds of miles away. The air temperature cooled down a couple of degrees.

As seen south of Paris, France. MSFS2024.

If you go high enough you can even see the umbra

It does past eclipses too, here's one in Mexico in 1991 (the sim doesn't go back further than 1990)

For the record, that total solar eclipse of 11th July 1991 is part of the same Saros series as the 30th June 1973 and 2nd August 2027 eclipses 🙂
