  1. Wow that's a lot of pixels. That must look amazing in person.
  2. UPDATE: OK so I had an hour of free time the other day ( I just moved and have a 2 yr old = zero free time) so I performed a delid operation on my cpu. I used AS5 as thats what I had sitting here and if I didnt like the results I would just change it. So I'm not using my sandy bridge 2600k anymore as I built a new computer just before I started this moving thing. So now I have a devils canyon 4690k. So on to the results.... NOT GOOD, turns out the shin etsu stuff intel uses isn't that bad after all. I'm seeing a 3 degree C rise in temps during Intel Burn Test. So I will order some Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra and report back once reapplied. Also when I get time I would like to do a head to head comparison from my 2600k to 4690k both at 4.8 with build pictures.
  3. Hi Drew, just go to Western Digital's website and download Acronis, then image the drive over and swap them. You will definitely notice a small boost in performance as I used rapter drives for years before going to an SSD. Then format your 7200 rpm drive and use it as a spare. You can buy an external case for it if you don't have room for both drives. However if you have the cash I would recommend buying an SSD for the OS as well, much faster. As for win10 I will leave that up to you to decide.
  4. Does Pro also have this problem as I would rather not have to replace this stuff on a regular basis. Has anyone used AS5 long term (1 year or more) between the die and heat spreader? Have you encountered any issues?
  5. Ok so I'm thinking of de-lidding. Currently I'm using AS5 between the CPU and HS. Everyone seems to be using the cooler lab pro stuff... Can I just use Artic Silver 5 as thats what I have sitting here on my desk. LOL. Thanks
  6. They screwed up so bad with 8 that they skipped 9 and call it 10. Then to really show they are trying to improve there image they send out all these updates that slow down your computer and render it useless. Way to go microsoft, what idiot is running this company. ( Fix a screw up by making a bigger screw up).
  7. Wow, looks like its time to try out x-plane again.
  8. Kevin, I would just sell the older ram and install a new matched set of 16GB. Use 2133 or 2400 ram, lower timings the better. If you choose to mix in the new ram with the old you would most likely have to run both sets at the lower value meaning even if you bought 2133 you would have to run it at 1600 to match the other ram. But 16GB is enough for most people, so just pull out the slower ram and enjoy the newer stuff.
  9. If you still have issue's or it happens again go to my computer, right click and select manage. Then select disk management and right click on the drive or partition in question and select change drive path. You can now change drive letters and partition size AFTER installing windows.
  10. I like the choice of plane here. Living up in Oregon I see it all the time.
  11. I'm just glad we are all getting along again... People are forgetting this is a speculation thread. If anyone actually had information they could share, it would be front page or on the P3D's website. I am exited to see what 3.0 brings also but there is no point in getting all mad about it. 3.0 will be here soon and we will all be able to enjoy!
  12. Nothing is overkill for flightsim... However your selected system is about as good as you can get. Just one thing about the ram, get as fast as you can afford, 3200mhz would be great. Good luck with the build. Ken
  13. Well enjoy building you're new computer. Keep us informed on the progress.
  14. You are better off leaving HT-OFF and raising your overclock. For example you may overclock to 4.6 but with HT- ON with the increased heat you may only get 4.3/4.4 stable. I had a 2600k that would be happy all day @ 4.8, so I left HT- Off as I saw no difference with any testing I tried. But if you already have an i-7 go ahead and try it, see what works for you.
  15. Rob, I work up here in Oregon and know a few engineers at intel (across the street from me), I will see if anyone can get some concrete info for you. No promises, but I can ask.
  16. I had a Q9550 @ 3.5 which worked nicely but I DID notice a big jump going to a sandy bridge @ 3.4 and again o/c to 4.8
  17. My devils canyon @ 4.3 runs frame for frame with my sandy @ 4.8 Unfortunately my devils canyon will only do 4.6 on water, but that equals 5.1 on my sandy bridge which it will do but not stable. Tested with fresh win7 installs and FSX Demo all the same settings, as apple to apple as you can get. With that said was it worth upgrading, probably not but, like Rob says building it is half the fun! I cant wait for Skylake-E, my next upgrade.
  18. These look good, where can you get these? I have not seen these in the states. Ohh, and bring on V3...
  19. First thing you have to ask is what kind of speakers are you using? If you are not listening to good quality speakers through your computer then I would not spend $100. on a sound card as you will probably not notice a difference. Most motherboards actually come with decent sound processors on them. By adding an aftermarket sound card you get some nice options for changing the sound but as for an increase in FPS I am sorry to say you will not gain 1 fps. I tested this with a core3d sound card and a saved flight in FSX. Ken
  20. 70c is OK for FSX just dont run IBT or Prime. If FSX plays well then that's the only real test that matters, don't worry about the heat anymore go enjoy flying! B)
  21. I would go with the 4690k and use the money you saved there and get a SSD deticated for Flight sim.
  22. I would like to see a 850 Watt P.S. but would go a 650 minimum. Also if you can add an SSD you will cut load times considerably especially if you use add on scenery. The video card will work fine you can always upgrade later.
  23. Go for it! This build will work great with FSX and Photoshop. As I use both programs and have basically the same setup.
