  1. The short answer is no. 1-PMDG NGX is great for procedures and it models the day to day in a 737 very well. Its very limited because let's not kid ourselves here, we're dealing with a desktop sim. It doesn't matter how realistic or accurate a fsx aircraft development is, it will always fall short because it's a desktop. 2- Even a Level D simulator has what we call "simisms". Everybody that has flown both airliners and done training in be it a Level C or D certified simulator, know that the sim and the real thing fly different and feel different. The simulator is designed for procedure training. To get the muscle memory, emergency procedures, etc. At a lower cost . They are designed to be a bit more sensitive than the real aircraft. So most of the time flying the sim ok will result in flying the aircrat very good. 3- Unless you have the "seat of your pants" sense of things I do not believe it would be possible. Now, with all that said, The NGX is arguably the best 737 development in FSX. I absolutely love it. It's as realistic as FSX allows it to be and PMDG did a great job on her.
  2. All overnighting in various places in the Caribbean.
  3. First of all thank God nobody was hurt. Second of all it's important for us to wait until the NTSB finish their report. Third of all FAR 121 regulations require that a visual approach be backed up by a navigation aid, be it an ILS, LOC, VOR, something. I don't care how many times I have flown into a particular airport, I always back it up. Not only with the FMC but by toning the frequency and IDing it. It's the basics that keep you alive in this business. I'm not saying the crew was complacent but if they would've backed this visual with the ils this would've never happened. It makes me sad because now fellow pilots endangered the lives of innocent passengers by not following a very basic procedure.
  4. Same here, I don't get the rant. The OP did include "Quality" in the topic.
  5. Yes sir, I'll be happy to answer your question. It's Green when coupled with the VOR/ILS and White when coupled with the GPS. It depends on what nav source you have it coupled to. I hope this helps, if you have any other questions ask away.
  6. Hi, I have about a thousand hours in this beast also. It shouldn't be hard to slow down at all. We usually fly it at about 248kts 4 miles out before we start configuring. The RW technique is to bring the power levers to flight idle and props 1700 RPM. That will slow you down pretty quick. At 188kts flaps 17, at 180kts gear down and at 156 flaps 35. It's a beauty to fly in the RW. I'm looking forward to purchasing this one. As mentioned above it is a true work horse. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
  7. The RL B1900 is a very stable flying machine and handles heavy amounts of icing very well. It's a very basic airplane with no autopilot so for me seeing a FMS in it is pretty disappointing, a simple garmin would've sufficed. That being said it is a rocket ship! Each 1279HP PT6 propels this bad boy like there's no tomorrow and is more than enough, too much, LOL. The RL airplane is very forgiving. I've had it at 17,000ft 15 miles from the landing airport and landed with no issues. I've also routinely had it at 245kts 4 miles from the runway and fully configured by 500ft on nice VMC days. The Mighty Beech is like flying a sports car. By far the most fun airplane I have flown. Hopefully Carenado made it justice.
  8. I fully recommend the PMDG J41. It is older and as a RW prop pilot it gives me the feeling that I am flying the prop. People say that it's a system hog but any mid level system today can run it fine. You do have to watch your engine temps but you get better at it. It's a prop and you have to treat her as such, just like the real one. If you get sick and tired of the engine fires, especially on start up you can always disable this they've really. A big huge plus is that it's supported by FS2Crew. If you want to fly any commercial airplane as realistic as possible in FSX you'll need a First Officer and FS2Crew provides that. The Majestic Q400 has a lot of fans but as mentioned above it's in a total different category than the other props you mentioned. I do not own it, partly because it is not supported by FS2Crew (YET) but once it is supported I'll buy it. Carenado B1900 isn't out yet, correct? But knowing their product history I expect a lot of eye candy and limited system depth. I'm planning on buying it simply because it's a hell of fun airplane to fly and I have well over 1000 hours of real time in this little beast. Depending on what type of flying you'll do with it it's single pilot certified RAZBAM E120 is another airplane I will buy once it's out. I have a few 1000 hours on this one too and it's by far my favorite prop. Fast, complex and sexy is the best way to describe this beauty, just the way I like my women except the complex part, lol. Something about Embraer that does it for me, lol. Since you mentioned RAZBAM I'd like to recommend their newly released Metro Liner, by far the best prop sound I've heard in FSX, they really captured the way a propeller sounds from the cockpit and it's a lot of fun to fly. It has a good weight and balance app and you can actually see the passengers I wouldn't recommend the ATR because its basically a port over from fs9 and I haven't had any luck making it work properly in FSX. I wouldn't recommend the POAB neither because it subpar in the flight model, graphics and vc. Take care I believe Majestic is working on an updated version of the smaller Qs on par with the Q400 quality
  9. If you think about a propeller as a wing (essentially it is an airfoil) and said airfoil (Propeller) being placed into a negative pitch angle. Remember Lift/Weight, Thrust/Drag still apply to an airfoil, doesn't matter if it's rotating at 1700rpm. That's the reason it's so pronounced on a prop and still effective below 30 kts.
  10. It'll work just fine. I use all thre default atc, ngx and fs2crew.
  11. Why don't we all just wait until the NTSB does their final report and state their findings? Way to much speculation going on.
  12. I believe you. I have never been in a situation like that but a lot can be avoided by a good preflight brief. Good CRM and the correct use of automation is a very good thing, however if automation is used as a crutch it can be very dangerous. We carry charts for a reason so not knowing where the airplane is or following the flight progress on a chart is just plain lazy and poor airmanship. It all goes back to the basics. As private pilots we always knew where we were because we had no choice, we did our pilotage and dead reckoning, so why not continue with the basics. People make this job harder than what it is. The real problem is inexperienced crew. I don't care if a pilot has 10k hours in a A330/B777if he/she is second guessing himself and is afraid to turn off the AP and just stick to the basics I consider that inexperienced and it's a huge problem an needs to be corrected.
  13. I don't mean to be "Monday Night Quarterbacking" and I do understand that this investigation is far from over but let me point out some things; 1- Basic flying skills. You cannot just rely on an ILS, every single airline pilot needs to be able to shoot a visual. I don't care what airplane, how familiar or unfamiliar with the aircraft the pilot is. You need to be able to recognize when you're below glide path. 2- How many hours did this pilot have? He should have spoken sooner about his concerns. In the US it is instilled upon us to speak up. This is no time to be prideful, there are innocent people in the back that depend on you to do your job. Everybody has limits. If you exceed your limitations please speak up. 3- This light that he's talking about. Could it have been glare from flying over the water? What is the concern about using sunglasses? It's considered rude? That's plain ignorant. 4- The pitfalls of relying too much on automation. See 1. It should have never come to this point. I've seen so many pilots rely way too much on automation to the point of loosing touch with the airplane. Automation is an aid, not a crutch. 5-Preflight briefing/approach briefing. What happened to it? If he was the PIC or SIC, Pilot Flying or Pilot Monitoring, he should have been very clear that he could initiate a missed approach and not wait for the instructor to call it. If the article is correct I don't buy his story at all. 6- Why wasn't the FO more assertive? To the point of taking over the controls. It isn't all that uncommon here in the US to call out any deviation, especially during critical phases of flight. If the diviation isn't acknowledged and corrected then the Pilot Monitoring can take over the controls. I don't know of any captain that wouldn't thank the first officer for doing that. In this case it would've been an incident report instead of loss of life. I hope this never happens to me or to anybody else. It's sad that at this day in age flightdeck crews can still be intimidated by the fellow next to him just because he has an extra stripe.
  14. What were you flying and how many hours do you have?
  15. I understand exactly what you're saying however it's a good idea to inform atc because of the flow of traffic and conflict/separation. I do not fly heavies, (unless you consider the B1900 or the EMB145 heavy, LOL) maybe one day but I have a few friends that do fly for Atlas on the 747-400 and -800 and for them flying above 250kts below 10knts is extremely rare. However it can be done.
  16. Exactly, I should've been a bit more clear when I said "you better". I meant it in a way of no fuss later on. The way it was explained to me was that you can take the FAR literally and you'll be safe when it comes to the regs and the fellas. But sometimes the regs aren't very clear so that's when common sense comes into the equation, but if you go by the book and inform ATC, hey, we need to do this because of this you'll most likely be covered. Communication goes a very long way in this industry
  17. I agree and thanks for clearing that up, it's been so freaking long since I opened up the FAR/AIM that I completely forgot about part d Maybe this is a clear indication that I need to, lol. However let me suggest one thing. If you ever have to exceed the 250KTS below 10k you better make sure you let ATC know on every single freq. that you contact. It's a very easy way to get violated by the FAA or like I like to call them "Fellas Against Aviators " the same goes to dep or app airports underlying class B airspace. If you must go faster than 200kts because of min safe speed make sure you announce it. ATC will most likely make a note of it and you might get a call from the "fellas", but you are covered, or you can avoid all that mess and just comply with the speed restriction by climbing dirty. Your call. About an OpSpec it wouldn't even be an argument, the "fellas" approve those so...
  18. Can you please provide the FAR PART that you are referring to? Because that I know of acft are designed with the 250kts below 10K in mind. No matter how heavy. Only the Administrator can clear an acft to go faster than 250kts below 10K, ATC can't.
  19. FSGRW is a great little easy to use program. I get everything I need WX wise with it. It's accurate and includes turbulence in a realistic way. I will continue to support the developer and give it 2 thumbs up. Oh and I can't believe I almost forgot to mention no wind shifts and the local wx effects, idk but to me It's a winner! And the upgrade is gonna be free
  20. Good idea, it'll make you a safer and sharper pilot. Use FS to your advantage and practice your holds and all the basics.i would plan and fly my lessons on FS before my real lessons. Less time and money than in the real one. I did that back when I was getting my instrument and breezed through it. Have fun!
  21. Good luck and please continuento post on your progress. Are you planning on continuing on to your instrument rating?
  22. Every single taxi2gate scenery that I own has the same invisible object crash problem. They haven't issued any fixes. I like their sceneries visually and recently fps wise also, but to put them up in the same league as flyTampa, etc is dead wrong. I fly with crash detection off anyway so it doesn't bother me if there's invisible objects but this dev needs to fix the issues, expecially if it's payware.
  23. Isn't it FL600, anything above that is uncontrolled...I neednto get back in the regs, I think I've forgotten more than I...lol
