FS9 Days are numbered

Featured Replies

I must admit I have yet to purchase the PMDG MD-11. While I would like to support companies that make products for FS9 the MD-11 does not touch my heart like the L-10,DC-10 and TU-154 but as a technical exercise it may be interesting. The MD-11 was a long time coming so I see no harm in waiting a little longer for the bugs to be fixed before purchase (I notice an update has just been released!)Carenado is a company that is impressing me at the moment, because it is said that FSX is the GA sim so maybe (I don't agree) there may be an argument for Carenado going FSX only.As it is I and I know a lot of other simmers are very grateful and I will buy every FS9 Carenado product from now on......he** I even bought the Cessna 172 .....me! LOL .It must be added their products are very nice!.But for PMDG to go FSX only....does not make sense to me but heyho. bon chance. :( Hello Eaglesoft Development Group, you really ought to consider making a Socata TBM 700/850 please. :(

am I missing a great addon not listed here?
You surely are, Pat! :( Ready For Pushback 747-200, Project Tupolev Tu-154M, FeelThere 737PIC, Dave Maltby's BAC 1-11 and my favourite: Digital Aviation Fokker 70/100 (a masterpiece!)...

FS9 days are all but numbered. The smoothness and graphics of my FS9+addon, is not nearly achiavable by FSX and its addons. And yes, I bought also some FSX addons. I am actually still much more satisfied by FS9. Not even PMDG right now would make me consider otherwise. And what I think about PMDG's sales, I think its a hoax. They say 75% to 25%. Still, they sell an all in one package, and HOW many people, including me bought the all in one package, knowing they will be using it for FS9 now, at least for some time to come and then possibly when the hardware catches up, switch to FSX. I believe almost everyone. So they can't possibly make the right estimate. So, they produce an aircraft for FSX, fine, I won't buy it. Make it FS9/FSX, sure, will buy the complete package - I see it as the future investment.

Oh I so agree to that.

Exactly! I bought the MD11 Combo (FS9+FSX) but I only use FS9. FSX has been deleted from my system, and will only ever get installed if I buy a new computer, which will not be during the current world-wide recession! All PMDG will succeed in doing by going FSX-only is losing customers. Good luck to them and goodbye from me.

What they should do is compare 747 sales, FS9 compared to FSX, for 747 there is no multipack AFAIK.
Numbered?I think my FS9 hangar is stocked with really nice addon aircraft and airports with environmental enhancements (AS, GE, UT, etc.)--should keep me busy and happy for many years to come. It was surprising to read that the MD-11 sales for FS9 was so low, considering all the postings and polls indicating otherwise. Too bad, really.1. "handful" bought FS9 MD-112. MD-11 sales = 75% FS10 + 25% FS93. MD-11 sales = 4 x "handful" :( Anyway, if PMDG choses to make the new 737NG for FS9, I'd buy it, if not, I can live without it, disappointing but no big deal. Between the Maddog MD80, F1 ATR72-500, Wilco CX, PMDG 744/MD11, LDS763, PSS772, F1 KAB200, and C9 F4, I have the coolest jets covered, and DF A36/Dakota, DA Do27, and RA SF260 give me some GA fun (am I missing a great addon not listed here?).I think going forward, I may pick up an aircraft or two and keep buying airports when funds become available (I should put my copy of FS10 on craig's list).Later,Pat
I'm not surprised that MD11 sales are poor. Any idiot could see that coming a mile away. Duh! It seems that PMDG dropped the economics 101 class in college!Airliners like 777, A320 , 767 and mainstream turboprops like EMB120, ERJ, CRJ, B1900, Dash 8 are all in high use with most airlines around the world therefore appeal to a vast simmer audience. But while there has never been a properly done 777 or 767-400 or 757, CRJ, B1900, etc...PMDG spends years on an MD11??? How large an audience is there for an airliner that has been phased out of service after a relatively short service life (except for a very small handful of carriers) and is being used primarily as a cargo variant with Fedex? Its not like the MD11 evokes nostalgia like the 707 or 727 or even the DC10. The MD11 was a very weird choice on which to spend years of development since it obviously would only appeal to a limited audience. I think that FS9 sales were low, because people decided that $90 for a discontinued aircraft that almost no one flies is insane. So what do they next? Next release...a Jetstream 41? :( Okay look, I understand that Robert Randazzo is nostalgic for this aircraft and his days flying for ASA. BUT, is this a wise business choice? No way! Do a poll of all the turboprops that simmers have been drooling for and maybe you'll find a few who have even seen a J41 in real life since very few airlines are still flying them (or even flew them in the first place). Who is the target market for this plane? Is PMDG assuming that just because THEY build it we should buy it? Or worse yet, are they assuming that we should support them with our wallets no matter what they do simply because they are PMDG? HELLO! Did they miss the global reccession part? Simmers would beg borrow or steal $90 for a new PMDG FS9/FSX B777 or B737 or B757 or CRJ but not for a MD11 or a J41. People are being very choosy with their money right now and I think that PMDG will also be disappointed with the J41 choice also. To make matters worse, the J41 is for FSX only! :( Lets see... raise yourhand if you are chomping at the bit to move to FSX just to run the PMDG J41? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? PMDG is releasing aircraft that THEY think is cool but have very limited market appeal. Why in heavens name would I pay $90 for an MD11 unless I am a Fedex fanatic? And why in heavens would I pay for a J41, of all things, unless my favorite local airline in West Dustville Australia uses it to ferry sheep and beer around the Outback? The other type of buyer is the type that would buy anything that is well modeled just out of curiosity, and there is nothing wrong with that...but this group is very small and quite frankly I'm just not that nice of a guy!At the end of the day, PMDG keeps releasing these non-mainstream aircraft, and raising their prices to stratospheric levels and then wonder why sales are poor? I didnt buy the MD11 and I'm not going to buy the J41. When they get their act together and release the B737v2 for FS9, I'll be first in line on release day. Times are tight and I'm very selective regarding whom has the honor of receiving my money.

I will say I agree with the much of the sentiment in here. I was really overjoyed when I heard that Mr. Grabowski had joined the PMDG team, I've been a fan of his since his ERJ panel was released for FS2000. It's remarkable that his panel is still the finest freeware RJ panel out there!!! Really shows how far ahead of the curve he was when he made that thing in the first place. And I will admit I was disappointed when they announced it was an MD11 they were developing, but only because it was not an aircraft I was interested in. By all accounts it is an outstanding piece of work!As other posters have said, this aircraft is one of the more obscure characters on the aviation landscape (despite it being a fine piece of equipment!) and that was one of the reasons I also decided not to purchase it.As for the J41, I think any person who flies in the real life understands the affinity that develops between man and machine so I can certainly understand their (or at the very least Robert's) desire to develop this aircraft. And PMDG has always done things their own way and that's perfectly fine. But, with neither the MD11 or the J41 being a particularly popular aircraft, especially in the US (which I am going to surmise is still their largest market) it's no shock that their sales would be far less than say

Well said! I wonder what the PMDG MD-11 sales would have been like if the FS9 version was released first? I bet you the FS9 sales would have been higher! remember that the FSX version has probably been out almost 3 times longer than the FS9 version so that makes sense...I am very dissapointed about them going FSX only...if they are not in it for the money (which has been claimed before) why not give their long standing FS9 customers continuing support? I have no problems paying something extra for the trouble of making it FS9 compatible either.

The future of FS has come to a stand still for the time being. IMO so should that of addons. What I mean is, if you developers have been developing for both sims, you SHOULD keep doing it. Why? The FS show is over. x and 9 are all that we've got left. It's like Window 98 and windows ME. A LOT of people never bothered with Windows ME and if that's to be the eternity of Windows, you'd end up with a huge crowd for one or the other. And the culprit of FSX is NOT the lack of raw computer power. Those developers who realize this a bit sooner than others will make a few more sales. You want the other half of the market? Develop for FS9. :) HINT I personally i'm waiting for the second generation eaglesoft Citation X (with functional FMS as promised) and CJ1+. If they were FSX only I would not purchase them at all. FSX is for missions and shared cockpit fun for me. Nothing more.

Hi guys, interesting discussion. Just wanted to throw one point into the ring that doesn't get mentioned a lot: what type of addon will be made and for what version of the sim is almost entirely driven by the lead developers, not the publishers. That's because high-quality add-ons are like fine furniture, hand crafted by individuals that have the knowledge and enthusiasm to complete the long process from concept to finished product. Marketability is a factor considered in the initial decision process but it's usually a minor factor since most developers won't ever get full financial compensation for their time spent anyway. I'm one of a few handful of devs who does FS addon work full time and I primarily pick my projects based on what I want to do and for which I can find or purchase data. My publishers may have other wishes and ideas but that's pretty much their problem :( IMO, that goes a long way to explain why companies like PMDG put out some "exotic" airplanes and why some of them are restricted to a specific version of the sim. In other words both publishers and customers may not always be the kings they'd like to be ;-)Cheers, Holger

FS9's days have been numbered for the 2 1/2 years since it's successor was released, and yet it's still hanging around! With no FSXI on the horizon, I would hope that aircraft developers will be smart enough to continue to develop for both platforms, but even if they choose not to, there is enough content already released out there to keep FS9 types busy for a long time to come. I see that PMDG are stopping future development for FS9, citing poor sales of their MD-11 for that platform and a high incidence of piracy for that version. I never bought it because I didn't want to have to change my operating system to run an $80 add-on, period. So, as long as new airports continue to be released for the old sim, and the odd new aircraft now and again from the likes of Carenado, Digital Aviation and Leonardo, I see no reason to ever buy FSX. Eye candy has its limits.
I have been saying this for a long time. FS9 is a stable platform that will continue to live for a long-time. I will never forget the naivety of Randazzo of PMDG almost two years ago mocking me on his forum for me telling everyone that PMDG's decision to make the MD-11 strictly for FSX was a mistake. Who's laughing now?I have FSX and it is alright, but I still use FS9 99.9 times out of 100 because of the incredible freeware that is out there.Bill Gates said that Vista will be the last "new" and "fresh" OS that MS will make. Also, for these developers that talk about piracy all of the time -- my Dad supported our family while I was growing up due to record sales and royalties in the music industry. So if there is even one developer that shares music with his/her buddies via e-mail or CD-sharing -- I do not want to hear them complaining about piracy!brando

Don't wait on Randazzo and his PMDG team to care about what they charge $$$. According to a resume' of his posted on avsim's main page, it sounds like all he does for a living is fly race planes or something to that effect in Nevada. The following is a direct quote from avsim: "No longer
