Nutty as I am about this whole flying thing even I get bored out of my mind as a passenger with a REAL wingview.Although wing views are not that big of a deal to me, I think your question is exactly like trying to explain to a non-flight simmer the thrill of flight simming: you either get it, or you don't. September 2, 201015 yr wingview is one of the very few things that I never get. What's in it? The fulfillment of the fantasy of being a...virtual passenger?I have explained it thouroughly from my point of view if you check some 16 posts up before your question. If it still doesn't hit the nail on the head for you, I guess Chuck is 100% right saying:your question is exactly like trying to explain to a non-flight simmer the thrill of flight simming: you either get it, or you don'tI believe we fulfill a lot of fantasies when flightsimming. Many more than in real flying, except for the core one, which is - flying. :(
September 2, 201015 yr I have explained it thouroughly from my point of view if you check some 16 posts up before your question.Ok, so in a nutshell it is about being a virtual passenger. Wouldn't a well-done virtual cabin be even better for that purpose? JasonFAA CPL SEL MEL IR CFI-I MEI AGI
September 2, 201015 yr Wouldn't a well-done virtual cabin be even better for that purpose? Not for me. Mainly for 2 reasons:1. I don't need extra memory eaten by virtual cabins/cockpits2. I stay in the cockpit as a captain and can get the wingview for a moment, whenever I wish, with a single click ** - Some people say it is unrtealistic since pilots can't see wingviews in flight. But: can pilots see their own aircraft from the outside when flying? And don't tell me you never ever watch it flying! :(
September 2, 201015 yr There is something "cool" about the sight of the wing in relation to the ruway at rotation, or cutting through the clouds while climbing or descending, or the approaching ground on final, as it changes from the surrounding landscape to the airport and tarmac, or even just during taxi, that increases the "immersion" factor and make you feel that you are not just "simming", but actually in a plane, flying. One moment you're the captain, the next, a passenger. Interest in the latter usually only lasts for a moment or two at a time, but it IS still cool. Why does one flight-sim? If you ask my 19 year old son he'll tell you that there is NO WAY he would ever "waste" his time because it's not "engaging" enough. I think to myself "are you nuts??" That's also why they make vanilla AND chocolate . . . Smooth Skies! -- Chuck B. September 2, 201015 yr Well I thought I would give this thing a more thorough run for its money. Heck I havent even got 10 minutes past a cold and dark cockpit and I have a bunch of bugs listed. This is going right off the real world procedures. I would like to see their list of bugs that they have right now to see if any of these are on the list.

September 2, 201015 yr Author To me, the wingviews let one enjoy all the scenery that they bought. Ultimate Terrain, GEPro, BEV, you name it. Buying all of the scenery addons, but never looking at it is like buying a complex aircraft only to start on the active with engines running and hitting F4. Matt L.
September 2, 201015 yr I don't really need a wingview, not with FSRecorder installed. You can very easily make new viewpoints and that way make your own wingviews. Plus, you have the added bonus of polygons not being wasted on a wing, but instead being used to make a pretty VC! September 2, 201015 yr Buying all of the scenery addons, but never looking at it is like buying a complex aircraft only to start on the active with engines running and hitting F4I couldn't have said it better! :( You can very easily make new viewpoints and that way make your own wingviewsAnd listen to engines deafening roar in the spot view... :(you have the added bonus of polygons not being wasted on a wing, but instead being used to make a pretty VCExactly why I mentioned FT and PMDG 737 being exemplary addons giving you a choice of the model YOU like.PS: To me the word 'waste' has always seemed veeeery relative. On the other hand, great to have some diversity in our friendly community.

As I said, with FSRecorder, I don't think one really needs built-in wingviews and thus no polygons are used for a wing; instead they are used to make the VC nicer. I agree however that the aircraft you mentioned are exemplary in that respect. They offer a wide range of possibilities so that everybody has what he wants. However, the problem with this approach is immediately apparent: Look at the included VCs. None of them have the high detail of the iFly VC. "And listen to engines deafening roar in the spot view!"Plus with a wing view one can create a cabin window view over the wing (cockpit view) .....and if one is really clever one could animate it..... all stuff that will never happen in FSX of course. :( My FS Videos
