February 9, 201115 yr Ok, so I guess it is best not to install FSX into the Program Files(x86) location. A few developers have mentioned this before. Now that I am doing a fresh install how do I choose where to install FSX. The FSX never asked me where to install it, it automatically puts it in the x86 location.Cheers! February 10, 201115 yr I have no idea why some say dont use the default install, I've been using FSX that way since day 1 without a problem.Primarily because of Win7's overly protective UAC. Even with UAC disabled one can have difficulty whentrying to work with files associated with the FSX installation.Plus the default path is ridiculously long. Something like "C:FSX" and "C:FSX SDK" are much easier todeal with. Users who are not techno-geeks WILL have issues with FSX installed to the default Win7 location. Paul

You may not have any problems with a vanilla install but if you use add-ons - sooner or later you will have an issue. Then, how do you know the problem is the install location or not? One less thing to worry about. Even with UAC disabled the potential for problems is still there. RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
October 18, 201114 yr Strangely enough, it doesnt seem to let me install it in the "normal" programm files folder". It only installs the fonts and the rest is in the x86 folder, any ideas? Regards,Claudio

I´ve heard of that problem before but I can´t recall what caused that. Do you install as admin? Best regards, Steffen Fight time: NGX 737-700: 37,0h; -800: 47,2h
October 19, 201114 yr Strangely enough, it doesnt seem to let me install it in the "normal" programm files folder". It only installs the fonts and the rest is in the x86 folder, any ideas? This sounds like normal behaviour when installing in a 64-bit version of Windows. There is a Program Files folder and a Program Files (x86) folder. Windows installs 64-bit applications into the Program Files folder and puts 32-bit applications (such as FSX) into the Program Files (x86) folder unless you change the default locations for the install as mentioned above. So, there is probably nothing unusual in this case. Windows 32-bit will have only a Program Files folder.

October 19, 201114 yr Commercial Member HelloI guess you do not use FScommander then ?No I don't...and I do think it's important that you be able to install where you like :)
October 19, 201114 yr No I don't...and I do think it's important that you be able to install where you like :) HelloYou can certainly install FSX under Program Files(X86) after all that is where MS puts it by default. You will however run into issues with programs that need access to certain files that FSX writes to the so called "virtual store"Programs that were written with XP as the target OS may have problems similar to FScommander. An explanation from the authors of FScommander and which may apply to similar utilitys. INSTALLATION OF FSXA similar problem occurs with respect to the installation of FSX itself. If you install FSX under C:\program files\ and choose "only for me" instead of "for all users", then FSX will write the scenery.cfg which the Database Manager needs also into the virtual store. Since external programs do not have access to the virtual store, the Database Manager cannot create the necessary databases. What needs to be done in case of problemsThe minimum you need to do is to install FSX "for all users". If you have installed it "only for me", there is not other way than to uninstall it and reinstall it.The best solution is to install FSX on a separate drive or, if you have only a C:\ drive, DO NOT install it under C:\program files.
