May 20, 201115 yr HiI have been simming with FS9 for 6 years.I have reached a point where I took the most out of FS9 and have a very stable and developed setup.I am going to buy a new computer this summer. The question is whether I should make the move to FSX at this point in time?Apart from enjoying the new PMDG 737NGX, will I get something better when it comes to visual appearance, landclass, clouds, fps, smoothness, etc...ThanksGhiom
May 20, 201115 yr You should do it only if you want to. No one is pressuring you. FS9 was/is a great sim, just a bit dated now. Like any good thing, something better comes out eventually. The main reason I moved was because I fly in rural areas and they looks sooooo much better in X than in 9. Plus the payware planes that have come out for X are much more advanced (more features, better textures etc) than the 9 ones were. You can always fly both! | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |

For VFR, FSX is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH better. Only times when I long for the FPS I had with FS9 are when lined up with the PMDG MD11 at KORD (FSDreamTeam) loaded with lots of traffic from UT2 and a beautiful cloudy REX2 sky. On my rig (see my signature) I get about ~10fps in some of those situations.Other than that; I love it! Regards, Frank van der Werff
May 20, 201115 yr Why should anyone want to 'convince' you ? Go with your feelings, think about the outlay and whether it is worth it. The choice is yours. I am sticking with FS9. Yes, FSX is better (albeit not without its problems) but I have always bought every other realease. I.E FS2000 and FS2004. I thought I would skip FSX, but at some stage Flight will be coming out and I will certainly be buying that. I personally would wait for Flight. But as I said the choice is yours. May 20, 201115 yr ThanksI am looking for someone to convince me!Regarding the possibility of flying both, certainly not, as I won't have time to develop and maintain two sims in //.GhiomHi Ghiom,Why not install both and see which one you fly the most and some of us end-up with both, others with FS9 or FSX...That's the beauty disk space isn't expensive anymore so you can see what you prefer after a few months :-)The only one that can decide is by your self and your own preference and that can be different per fellow simmers out there... So I would go for my preferred hardware install both (invest time) and that see where you end up with maybe both maybe one :-)Have fun,Cheers, André
May 20, 201115 yr I prefer the fact that FSX is having more stuff developed for it these days than FS9 (for example, the recent iFly 737 NG has a VSD in FSX and not in the FS9 version), but if you have plenty of stuff for FS9 and are happy with it, then there really is no desperate need to switch. Most of the decent external programs for FS work with both FSX and FS9 (Topcat, FS Build, Flight Keeper etc), so it is really only a few whistles and bells that make FSX a little bit better, and in most respects you can do everything in FS9 that you could do in FSX. Don't let peer pressure make you switch if you are happy with the older sim.So long as you can fly the PMDG 747 in FS9, it will always be worth having, and if you want to feel good about flying FS9, just say 'Supronov Yak-40' - you can't get that for FSX, and it is the mutts nuts of flight sim aeroplanes.Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
May 20, 201115 yr Author Thanks for your replies. The reason why I am looking for good reasons to be convinced, is because I cannot convince myself:Pros:- more developments in FSX: PMDG 737NGX, Level-d 757 (one day?), sceneries...- Something new, after 6 years with good-old FS9Cons:- FPS- missing "Active Camera" feature- having to rebuild everything again- no good AFCAD replacementThanksGhiom
May 20, 201115 yr Biggest advantage: FSX doesn't pause when rightclicking or accessing the menu!!!!! John doe
May 20, 201115 yr I made the switch pretty quickly after coming back to FS from quite a long break. It all came down to the fact that the FSX world looks so much more believable than the FS9 one, at the time both installations were pretty much default with FSGenesis base mesh. Now I have added UTX and GEX it looks even better.. .. .. although I did have to upgrade my machine (who would have thought it, choose a "looker" and you run into high maintenance) .. ..The only thing I miss from the earlier simulators is FSNav, although now I run Plan-G on a second machine I can live without that. You don't lose anything by just trying it though, if you are thinking of waiting for "Flight" then we still have no idea of when it is coming out, and even when it does give it a couple of years at least before the top-notch add-ons start coming out for it.G Gary Davies aka "Gazzareth" Simming since 747 on the Acorn Electron

Also visit scenic areas like Hawaiiand Switzerland..After a while, you'll know which simulator to start up on any given day :( Bert
May 20, 201115 yr Moderator Cons:- FPS- missing "Active Camera" feature- having to rebuild everything again- no good AFCAD replacementThanksGhiom- FPS - With todays hardware FPS isn't as much as an issue with FSX as it once was. Even I my POS computer I can fly the PMDG 747 or LDS 767 into FSDT's JFK with a good amount of traffic and maintain 25 - 30 FPS regularly.- missing "Active Camera" feature - EZdok is the "Active Camera" of FSX- no good AFCAD replacement - A few good fellows like Ray Smith and Jim Cook has put out MANY new AFCADS for FSX including some major HUBS and some smaller strips for various locations around the world. If your looking for opinions or suggestions on why or if you should switch, it really comes down to what your looking for, I was on FS9 from the time it came out until April '08. The main reason I switched was because I think it looks a lot better than FS9, namely the ground textures and the water. The clouds, while FSX will support higher res version than FS9, still look about the same in each sim, as does the sky colors. Aside from some other hidden features that FSX offers, the main thing for me was the looks. For the heck of it, I reinstalled FS9 about a year ago just to ahve a look at it again. I spend about 2 days reinstalling most of my addons, ground and sky textures, etc. Once it was done I fired up FS9 and took a flight from KSEA to the old Flightzone KPDX in the LDS 767. To be honest with you, between the water in and around KSEA and the low res GE Pro ground textures, I was pretty disappointed in the looks of FS9. Granted KPDX still looked pretty good considering how old that package, but the rest of the sim just looked horrible to me after being used to FSX for a while. I ended up uninstalling FS9 again a few days later and have stuck to FSX ever since. If you've got a computer with enought CPU power (over 3.6ghz at least), some fast ram, and the time to set it up properly, as well as the finances to rebuild your addon collection, then I would say give it a shot. If your running something under 3.0ghz and want to fly into dense 3rd party airports with complex a/c and lots of AI, you probably be disappointed frankly.Maybe you should just install FSX by itself and see how it goes? If you get really good performance with stock a/c then maybe you should proceed. If you struggle to run the stock set up at high settings then just uninstall it and stick to FS9 or wait for Flight to come out and see if thats a viable option for you. May 20, 201115 yr I have had every Flight Simulator from the early FS3 DOS days right through each upgrade and was like you a die-hard FS9 man, steadfastly refusing to move over to FSX. But having built a Quad Core-based machine and having spent a bit of money on the new system,I eventually migrated across, and have now begun to wonder why I had been so stuck with FS9. The graphics, the sceneries, the aircraft, specially the top-quality ones, are a heck of a difference, now,in FSX.Yes,I will admit to having my fair share of FSX-created hiccups, but through the marvellous guys and gals in this Forum,a solution was always forthcoming. In the end I got there, where I now have a very smooth, stable FS platform fully utilising the hardware I put together specifically for itI for one will not moving back to FS9. May 20, 201115 yr Cons:- FPS- missing "Active Camera" feature- having to rebuild everything again- no good AFCAD replacementThanksGhiom- Well the FPS isn't an issue anymore on current hardware, but don't expect to go full right either with all sliders- As for Active Camera check out EZDOK you will be in for a surprise goes far beyond our trusty Active Camera... (amazing piece of software) (http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum39.html)- Indeed but that holds for FS9 too... (most software is for both simulators anyway)- What do you mean by afcad replacement, can be different things?- UT2 great stuff and far better performance control over AIHope those answers are helpful ;-) André
May 20, 201115 yr I have been on FSX since the day it came out and still wonder to this day if I did the right thing or not. FS9 was pretty nice with the add-on stuff. I still think 70% of all users are on FS9.
