May Lockheed Martin take over the virtual world (and more)

It is very apparent that the Microsoft Flight Simulation is now sold off to Lockheed Martin and now Microsoft is going in a very different direction....back in the 1990's there where a few other developers working on Flight Simulation. What is the future of Flight Simulation seeing as MS Flight is a big joke...I am going with FSX and Prepar3D for as long as that licence will let me

You must also remember that LM isn't a software company and it certainly isn't a gaming or simulation company... they are a high end defense contractor, so anything they do will be for the benefit of that alone. If it has any unintended benefits such as giving us a new sim, it's purely coincident and not intentional. And once something comes up that pays them more money to move in a different direction or wants P3D to be something else, P3D will be gone too...One only needs to read this press release to see we are not their target market....http://www.lockheedm...10Prepar3d.html

“The Prepar3D™ interface will enhance the ability of military services to provide realistic and integrated training experiences for warfighters before they deploy, so they can fight exactly as they've trained," said Chester Kennedy, vice president of Engineering at Lockheed Martin’s Simulation, Training & Support business unit. "One example would be an aircraft flying in the Prepar3D ™ environment which can now be joined to a system such as Warfighter’s Simulation, which simulates large-scale training exercises, for a richer training experience. We can quickly create custom training solutions based on a customer’s needs.”

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Till now Prepar3d is officially only available for professional and flight-student purposes.Nevertheles there are non-prof and non-students using it as well , there are just ways to get it.BUTWe have to keep in mind LM did not create Prepar3d to make real money with it , for a billion dollar industry such a thing like a simulator is more a service article than merchandise.I really think is not realistict LM will welcome many thousends of hobby-simmers on the Prepar3d forum , completely outnumbering their real customers.Probably LM will make a wall around Prepar3d only real professionals can climb.Leen de Jager

I'm not sure that supporting the arms industry with the money from enthusiats for civilian flight simulation is a perfect fit. :(

It is what it is and most likely not last very long...HOWEVER MS Flight so far is like.......It has already been said.

X plane 10 will be the future most likely as Prepar3d is no intended to be average simmers simulator.

I know. What I really would want is Fly!3 filled with the best of all sim worlds :D. Meanwhile I enjoy X-Plane (instead of FSX/P3D) and will add AeroflyFS for some fun flying (instead of Flight). The two "evils" - first, installing Windows on my Mac, and second supporting an arms company - are just not very much attractive to me.

Ok, a little bit of logic. If LM-Prepar3D is only for the professionals and not for the aviation enthusiasts then why they bothered to be interviewed by PC PILOT and not only once, but in 2 parts!

Hi,If that's the case then why is John Nicol posting in the Unofficial Prepar3D AVSIM forum?. If your speculation is correct, no one from LM and or Prepar3D would be participating here at AVSIM.

Probably LM will make a wall around Prepar3d only real professionals can climb.Leen de Jager

HelloI think some folk find it easier to argue "LM Prepar3D is not meant for us"Than it is to admit they find it too expensive..

LM like any other corporation is not adverse to get a revenue stream as long as the cost of doing so is not prohibitive.

I believe in many cases enthusiast and professionals are the same :(

The Unofficial Prepar3D AVSIM forum , is there because AVSIM welcomes all sim-users.Among our flightsimfriends are many professionals using Prepar3d , thats why.Nevertheless on that same forum you can read Prepar3d is absolutely not ment to be a consumer-product.Latest developments in simworld will probably open LM`s eyes and I expect them to start building the wall shortly.Alltough it might generate some revenues for LM ,its very unrealistic to expect them enter the gaming industry.Leen de Jager
