The New Front Page is Terrible.

Featured Replies

The new front page fails to offer what a front page has traditionally done. That is, a quick exposition of important information. You had this with the prior page. I could quickly see anything of interest and it was in Black and White! Now there is stuff that is poorly organized and forces me to scroll around to see "what is what". Also, the visually vague color scheme is bad. Imagine a newspaper printing in that childish attempt at visual art.

I have absolutely no idea why people like you feel compelled to change for the sake of change. This one is very bad.

When I came to the redesigned front page I thought I was in the forums! It took me a few minutes to realize that I was at avsim new front page.

When I came to the redesigned front page I thought I was in the forums! It took me a few minutes to realize that I was at avsim new front page.

As that was one of the main design aims, I'd say they succeeded then.

The old front page was a chronological list of items. All static text, no links to the stories concerned, no prioritisation, so freeware files were mixed in with news, reviews, payware releases, etc. Those who think that was better really ought to try the new layout for more than five minutes. Give it a couple of days at least before denouncing it. You might actually find you like it.

I am not going to comment on the redesign itself; rather, I find it troublesome that some of the early criticism has been harsh and disrespectful: "childish attempt," "people like you," comments in all caps .... Honestly, I'm dismayed.

Certainly, everyone has his or her own opinion, but why can't we express it in a civil way?

People like who? If your comment wasn't so full of emotion I might be able to stomach your feedback.

for the original OP, this was NOT "change for the sake of change", it was a redesign to bring the software into the 21st century, to make it easier and quicker to post, and more stable. It was also a change to bring it all under one software roof. There is NO WAY to please 100% of this community, 100% of the time.

As for those with NO constructive criticism other then one word replies, your response is coming. (putting Marine hat on)

I have to say that I like it much better than the first attempt that was made a little while ago. The colour scheme I find very easy to read and not overly poulated with adverts like the first attempt. Like anything it will take a little time to adjust having been a member of avsim for many many years but I like it. Thanks guys

I just bought two latest greatest internet tv's-hadn't kept up with any of the latest technology-spent a week cussing and cursing-but finally figured it all out and it is pretty cool. Even got my iphone to stream music to the whole sound system wirelessly-that took another day of cussing to figure out but is extremely cool.

So I look at my 80 year old parents that are so intimidated that they won't turn on their tv's-look at what they are missing out on cause they want to stay with the "old" and can't keep up with the new....except when I do it for them-then they are thrilled (watching netflix for example)..won't do it on their own though.

With that in mind -a lot of "new" is bad imho-but a lot of it is also good....

Is it just "different" or is it "new" or is it really "terrible"..... well my 80+ parents would say terrible tll I show them what I can do-give it more of a spin before pronouncing it "terribile" is it really a downturn for the past things or is a really an improvement and our rejection of such makes us old before our time .......

Me-hope to stay on he cusp for the future and people look at me and say what a Hi oldster that stays up with the times.....

One of the banners could be moved to the top between the avsim logo and the search box in order to free some screen real estate. Although, that wouldn't look too pretty.

Whenever an organisation radically changes the design of its website there is often a negative knee-jerk reaction by some because they're taken out of their comfort zone and struggle to find things that were easy before. I felt the same when the BBC recently changed theirs.

But after a few weeks you do get used to the change and I'm sure the same will apply here. The old AvSim website did look tired and I think the new one is a great improvement. :good:

I think it looks pretty good. It's just one extra mouseclick to see the new files for those that just come here to download stuff.

Maybe Tom could just throw some simicons at the top of page for quick navigation to make everyone feel at home. :P
