April 14, 201214 yr I still use default ATC. I am curious, who else still uses it? And if you do use it, what don't you like about it? RJ
April 14, 201214 yr Still using it here. Not a big fan of IVAO etc, since I want to have realistic AI traffic around me. I think the default MS ATC still has the best quality of sounds and voices. Listening to VoxATC and others just sounds sooo robo-like. What I don't like? Missing regional dialects (American English everywhere I go, even in the deepest part of Siberia they sound like the ones at JFK). Bad separation and traffic management - even with add-ons like AI smooth. No support for priority handling, emergencies etc. and no SID/STAR support. Also some weird approach routes from time to time and definitely the completely stupid way Go-arounds are handled. Instead of sending you in a holding pattern, or just bring you back to final approach, they send you some 100nm into the opposite direction and then bring you back those 100nm... I found a way to use MS ATC and recognize the situations in which it's better to ignore them...it's not perfect but it works for me.
April 14, 201214 yr I aint a psychoanalyst but knowing that you're not alone is somehow relieving eh? Lol.. I do sir, only when flying VFR.. I wouldn't say I didn't like it, but the apparent limitations are sid star and speed restriction feature :)
April 14, 201214 yr I still use and like FS ATC and was surprised it was not improved in FSX. The improvements I would like are regional accents and altitude constraints for SID's My FS Videos
April 14, 201214 yr I still use default ATC for the same reasons listed here. It's a shame MS didn't do more with it. FS2020 Alienware Aurora R11 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10700F - Windows 11 Home 32GB Ram NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super OC 16GB - Pimax Crystal Light VR
April 14, 201214 yr I still use it, and it meets my needs. I have Radar Contact in a box somewhere, and have been considering upgrading to V4, but default is pretty good for most situations. Someday I'll get off my duff and learn to write approaches in Notepad like Ed does! John G.
April 15, 201214 yr I use it, but I think it is idiotic the way you are passed back and forth to the same ATC center. My Radar Contact began acting up. I was scolded for not catching instructions that had not been given. I finally told the controller to F off!
April 15, 201214 yr I still use it also. In spite of its many weaknesses, I appreciate the quality of the voices and the ability to use it within the sim rather than having to set up some kind of canned flight and running another program. I have often wondered whether someone couldn't have tweaked the internal programming and improve it rather than making a seperate add on. At this point I know it's not going to happen but I find it hard to believe it couldn't have been accomplished. Now if someone could come up with something that has the quality of FS2Crew or MCE that combined ATC and flight crew interactions -- well, we can dream can't we? LOL
April 15, 201214 yr I still use default ATC. I am curious, who else still uses it? And if you do use it, what don't you like about it? That seems an odd question. I use it. I've tried the alternatives, which all have nice features in their favour, but the default system is the only one I find rugged and consistent enough to work in all situations, taxi you on the ground accurately, not vector you to land through mountains, give timely instructions and handle un-towered airports well. I'm sure I am not alone amongst non-US citizens irritated by the bias of voice accents but on balance I find the default system suits me the best. April 15, 201214 yr .....a big plus is one can edit FS ATC. I remember I downloaded a file where someone had gone to the trouble changing all the phrases into Russian!.....now that is one BIG job. :shok: But then of course the whole world was in Russian. My FS Videos
April 15, 201214 yr I, sometime, use it when I want to do a quick flight. I think it is better than what many users make it to be. However, I don't like how it forgets about you on approach. Also, as it has already been mentioned, the accents. I started using PFE Delux and the varieties in accents is much more immersing. Last night, I was flying from EKCH to EGCC and it sounded more realistic as I was entering London control and I heard all kinds of different accents. It offers SIDs and STARs options, taxi guidance, and many more. Of course it has it is own shortcomings, but I like it. Naif Almazroa My Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/Youmou0205
April 15, 201214 yr Author That seems an odd question. J LOL,, that was a odd question.. Looks like I forgot a word.... Should have read: And if you do use it, what do/don't you like about it? Interesting seeing the poll asking which ATC you use: http://forum.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=370439 I'll have to see if I can find that Russian mod, that would be rather funny.... :Peace: Thanks everyone for responding.. April 15, 201214 yr not vector you to land through mountains John, do you also mean approaches like Geneva, Innsbruck, Chambery or Antalya? I remember the default ATC trying to vector me via a mountain slope when approaching LSGG as well as LTAI. * * * All in all, I am one of those who tried different options: default, Radar Contact and on-line (VATSIM). Most of us here are so called hard-core simmers. But it depends on us which aspects of simming we want to make as real as it gets. In my opinion if you seriously want a proper, realistic and challenging ATC within a home environment, it must be VATSIM. VATSIM controllers are extremely well trained and some of them are professionals in their RL. It may be stressful but cannot be beaten. I also listen to real ATC a lot (liveatc plus scanners) and my impression is that the default ATC is very far from what it should be. In addition I too can't stand US English everywhere - it feels sooo boring and unrealistic! On the other hand I understand the default one is the easiest and most convenient to use. It is part of the game plus does not ever surprise you. To fly on VATSIM you need to educate yourself first, have more spare time and, last but not least, have proper circumstances around you. For these reasons (especially the last one) I don't fly on-line as much as I would like to. But I have no doubts what the ATC of my real choice is.
April 15, 201214 yr I still use it in both FS9 and FSX(yes, I use both, didnt have to make the hard choice). Default is fine, not awesome but serves the purpose. Sometimes, i dont use any at all.
April 16, 201214 yr Hi. Yes, I use it for VFR flights. Otherwise I use RC pretty well exclusively. The only other time I use the default (FS9) is when approaching uncontrolled airports at the end of an IFR flight. That's not strictly ATC though- just the local multicomm. I swap from RC to the default after cancelling IFR in the air in order to hear whether or not anyone else is around. Changing pilot voice is a bit odd, but not nearly as odd as being vectored 70 nm or more out of my way for the approach... Cheers, D
