August 25, 201213 yr I listened to Neil Armstrong's touch down on the moon on AFVN radio in 1969, when I was with the Marines in Vietnam. It was one of the events that inspired me to carry on. Here are a few words that have always lifted me. They seem appropriate now: A Tribute High Flight Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . . Up, up the long, delirious burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or ever eagle flew — And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God. — John Gillespie Magee, Jr. Joe Brown
August 25, 201213 yr Just remember that his footprints will remain on the moon for millennia - long after all earthly trace of us has gone....
August 25, 201213 yr The Mercury, Gemini and Apollo era astronauts have always been my heroes. Their contribution to this country and the world has been well noted in the past. It is sad to hear of Neil Armstrong's passing. It is also sad to realize that he and the other astronauts never got to see man return to the Moon after the Apollo program. I was blessed to see those days of amazing adventure as a kid. RIP Neil.
