December 17, 201213 yr For you they are just tools of your trade, Necessary part of life, I completely recognise that. So do I. But that mad kid had access to a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns that his mum had in the house legally because she thought Doomsday was coming... That's the thing I have trouble understanding. I sincerely hope that America finds a way forward to some form of non-blanket, sensible form of gun control that makes THAT particular scenario less likely to occur.

Criminals don't get to determine my rights. Any more so than people flying planes into buildings. We have a Second Amendment. Ill no more endorse limits on it or any other of the Bill of Rights. I have an absolute armory full of Semi Automatic rifles and hand guns. Not from fear of anything other than enjoyment and the odd wild life that decides I'm in the wrong spot. I carry them in my truck at all times and I'm also a CCL holder. This isn't the UK or Europe we have different beliefs and rights afforded through our constitution and I want it to stay that way. There are objects all around us that can be used as a weapon: knives, wood, metal objects, rope, wire, furniture, cars, toys, water(for drowning someone), pets(kill or bite on command), our hands/legs, etc. I gotta vote on Mental illness because I see more of that lately. There was a father in my city who stabbed his kids over 40 times due to mental illness, also a mother who drowned her kids, etc etc. the list goes on. "MONTREAL— Shock and anger greeted the news on Wednesday that former Quebec cardiologist Guy Turcotte, who killed his two children three years ago, would be released from a mental health facility. In July 2011, Turcotte was found not criminally responsible after he stabbed five-year-old Olivier and three-year-old Anne-Sophie nearly four dozen times as they slept in their beds in February 2009."
December 17, 201213 yr Commercial Member Just an aside, but if anyone develops a dislike for me based on political beliefs good riddance. There are some folks here that have a 180 degree view of things from me I quite like and hope to meet someday. Neither here nor there but yeah. I agree, I think it's just ridiculous how some folk judge other human beings based on their political opinions (of course some extremes like nazism and similar are another story though)... Opinions are just opinions, politics should not be taken personally. Anyway, I think conversation about what could be done in future to prevent this kind of tragedies from happening is a good thing, if nobody even thought about doing something to make world better everything would be even more messed up than it already is. Everybody should do their best to make society safer place and prevent this kind of things from happening, and I believe it's possible as some decades ago there were just as many guns but way less this kind of tragedies.
December 17, 201213 yr For you they are just tools of your trade, Necessary part of life, I completely recognise that. Exactly. Don't have a problem with that - not wanting to wade into this subject (UK vs US gun law in this case) as it's not something I really know about but I'm pretty sure that someone like a farmer in the UK (who uses their firearm for wildlife control etc) can have one under license.
December 17, 201213 yr I emailed my local police station about him 5mins ago, lets see what they say. I will post the reply when I get it. Sir, I have read your e-mail and if you want the police to help this young man, you will have to come to the police station to write an official statement, with the following information….. His full name and address + what you know of this young man ex.: gun catalog + that he already tried to commit suicide. We will then take a report and an investigator will look into this matter. You can be assured that your identity will remain confidential. Edit: Identity of Agent removed by moderator Spirit Flyer.
December 17, 201213 yr I have read your e-mail and if you want the police to help this young man, you will have to come to the police station to write an official statement, I recall an incident about 15 years ago where a known kid with similar issues committed a shooting, had talked about it before hand, people knew but didn't go to police or authorities. After the shooting the police were very critical that people allowed this to happen. I think Columbine had similar issues as some people may have known those two kids had problems but didn't act on it. Just making the police aware of this kid is the right thing to do. There maybe only so much the police can do but at least if something does happen, no one will point the finger at you for doing nothing. Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

Kind regards,
December 17, 201213 yr There were some comments mentioned here about the 2nd amendment as if they were facts. My understanding is that the wording of the 2nd amendment is ambiguous and open to interpretation, meaning different things to different people. The mother who owned these guns was a well-regulated militia of one.
December 17, 201213 yr Your argument is old. Sequentially, first comic books, then television and movies were blamed for peoples bad behavior. Now its video games turn. The arguments usually hinge on the greater immersiveness of the medium. Its been put forward that video games reward-for-violence based structure drives increased aggressiveness; and there is some scientific correlation of that effect. (immediate increases in real world aggressiveness have been noted, etc) But in science, correlation and causation aren't the same. For instance, on the other end of the scale its been pointed out that even as the use of violent video games has risen dramatically, the overall US crime-rate (including the juvenile crime rate) has continued to drop. (This has only recently begun to reverse from a decades-long fall) Cause and effect is muddy and has remained so, especially since there are no studies of long term exposure to video game violence, since its nearly impossible to screen out all the other violent influences in our society to keep track only those related to video games..... I would say that statistically, mental disease and socioeconomic status (among other factors) have proven much more likely predictors of violent behavior than video game use could ever hope to be. It's worth noting that one of the worst atrocities of modern times, 9/11, was inspired by God (via Bin Laden and his cronies). There are serial killers (Peter Sutcliffe was one) who claim to be doing God's work in bashing prostitutes' brains out. If mentally disturbed killers never saw a single example of violent media, they'd be influenced by religion, or politics (Anders Breivik), or just voices in their head (try censoring those). I'm not drawn to violent video games -- I got COD4 on a cheap offer out of curiosity, and uninstalled it after one playthrough. Beyond admiring the quality of the graphics, it really struck me as just tedious, gung-ho violence. But millions of people play games like that without confusing it with real life, just as millions of people read the Bible or Koran without realising any desire at all to go out and commit murder. As for guns and the USA, that's a matter for the American people to deal with and I'm not expressing any opinion, beyond saying that I think it's less a matter of quantity of firearms in that country than it is of the distinctly totemic value attached to guns and gun-ownership, which I imagine was established back in the dangerous, pioneering days of the Old West. That's something you don't see anywhere else, even in countries where gun-ownership is fairly common. That's how it looks to me, anyhow.
December 17, 201213 yr hello, Everytime I think about it, I have tears in my eyes. My gallery: http://s1075.photobucket.com/albums/w430/yankeegolf/

Kind regards, ok thanks by the way, I forgot to mention that my troubled young neighbour's mother works in the kitchen at a highschool near me, no joke. I will help this kid with the aid of the police. I don't want him to snap and kill people but I think it will happen because he tried to kill himself over an xbox which means he has a weak unstable state of mind. I offered money, gifts, girl dates, coffee dates with my friends, trips paid by me but he just wants to sit in his room and play xbox: HALO, CALL OF DUTY, etc. Just wait a few months or years and I will be on CNN telling Anderson Cooper all about it It's worth noting that one of the worst atrocities of modern times, 9/11, was inspired by God (via Bin Laden and his cronies). Too bad he wasn't rational enough to take you up on any of those offers. I'd say keep it up though - surely he will want to do something useful with his life eventually? That kind of lifestyle would drive me nuts.
