ORBX World is here!

Featured Replies

So, this product will enhance the whole world, but won't contain as much detail and accuracy compared to the other scenery packs, right?

Anyway, something better than vanilla FSX that covers the whole world is welcome.

Mighty expensive. But im sure there is a ton of work invovled.

Two questions: How will this affect upcoming Prepar3d releases? I would imagine that LM is working on updating scenery as well and who knows if P3D might be that price as well.

2nd: Does this mean that all airports/runways/taxiways aka AFCADS for the entire world will be done? Might be showing my ignorance hence the lack of programming terms and knowledge.

This is great news. Sure beats buying GEX regions the world over.

This is an almost purely graphical upgrade, like REX upgrades sky and water, ORBX World will upgrade the look of the landscape. It is a competitor to GEX by Flight1.

ORBX will in time start to cover some airports, but ORBX world is more like a service pack for FSX that upgrades it at its core and most other scenery will look better because of it.

As for Prepar3D I have no faith whatsoever that we will se any significant upgrade of the default scenery in terms of eyecandy. They have managed to release 4 upgrades so far with little to show for in that department.

Actually fellows, you can make a set of Orbx textures yourself right now if you know what your doing. Backing up everything in global folders, and replacing with the appropriate Orbx textures by season. It does require knowledge on how FSX calls up textures and it is a bunch of work but it can be done already.

Orbx will make an installer, config GUI so that its scripts will do what you would need to do manually.

The other parts of the proposal are interesting, ongoing updating of airports, POI etc but notice that they are still planning to make detailed regions, ie like northern california which include landclass updates. It does not say that the detailed regions will be free, but rather you will still have to pay for the detailed regions and over time you would benefit with improved textures throughout the global world.

I think this would only work as long as we dont have to switch between different areas before launch.

For example, if I want to fly in Australia, I need to ensure Australia is selected rather than Europe

Good luck! I'd rather watch paint dry, or pay someone ca $190 to have it done for me. :)

Almost looks too good to be true. But if we get even half of a normal OrbX product it'll be worth it.

I do have some concerns regarding compatibility with other scenery products like all the dozens of great airport addons we all have.

It looks like all you're getting is replacements for the default textures, autogen, 3d lights and some new trees. This should be compatible with any addon airport (unless there's as problem with the trees, of course).

:LMAO: :LMAO: ....I'd rather not watch paint dry either, but I sure can find other uses for $190. pssst ...nudge, nudge, wink, wink ...Don't tell anybody but I have done it already....lol....and also have another set buy Amie, the default and GEX are fully backed up and I have a *.bat file that can swap the different sets. Swapping takes a couple of minutes.

Yep, like Hook says, this is an addon that is compatible with almost every addon out there, except those few that replaces the same default FSX textures.

What matters for other addons to work as they should is the placement order in the scenery library....there would be no issues as long as your airport addons are above these new global textures (which are in the base FSX folders already located in the lower positions in your library).

Ha ha! The time something like that would take me is better spent in the office where those $190 should take me less than two hours overtime to earn :). I'm just lazy, and I haven't made a batch file since I had MS-DOS 6 installed on my 486 sometime in the early 1990s :).

It's about time! This should have been their 1st project.

TEXTURES, LANDCLASS, TREES, Coastlines, Roads, and the lights. It's what I've been waiting for.
