Orbx remarks about X-Plane

Featured Replies

I've been coding since age 16, my first published game/sim was back in 1985 ... Air Traffic Controller

Wait... 1985? I may have played that. What computer did it run on? Got a screen shot?

I remember coming home from work one weekend, getting an ATC game, and spending 40 hours playing it over the weekend from Friday evening to Monday morning. Talk about one engrossing game.

As for your video, someone needs to make a video of flying a pattern around Duluth in FSX and asking if XPlane can do THAT. :)

Just a word of warning to John V.

I have been through this all before, except it was about processors and not software. 8 bit, 16 bit, 32 bit, 64 bit. Do you know anyone out there who is building machines using 32 bit processors?

It's all about ram capacity and the people who move onto 64 bit platforms will be the winners. XPlane 10 and XP10-64 are really two different platforms and it's not fair to try to compare FSX to XP10-64. Fully implemented a 64 bit platforms will win every time just because they have the head space to pack in all of those goodies that will make their software the best. When was the last time a major sim package was released for FS9? 'nuff said.

Does anyone here remember flying FS2 on their XT's and if so, do you wan't to go back?

Making the jump to 64 bits is going to change FS into a totally different sim and those that don't jump on board are goling to go the way of Lotus and DB. Good programs that no one uses anymore.

John, you had better get on board or you will be left behind

For me Orbx-64 would be dream packages.

~~ Dale ~~

Never bought any Orbx packages.

I invested fairly moderately into 3rd party addons fs2004, but not at all for fsx. I've now come to uninstall those addons, and soon I'll come to removing the Microsoft Sims alltogether from my machine. I guess others there will do what I've done, but I can't imagine a the tide flowing the other way.

Then you didn't understand all of it. I didn't state anywhere, that there is no landclass data possible

Ah yes that will be the one. I've had a read through it now and understand a bit more, (Sorry I just skimmed through it last time). As you have also proved with your NZ Pro scenery, the engine is quite capable of great things, it just needs more people to come along and make them

@Dale, the issue I have here is that it's unlikely that when a P3D 64bit version comes out, addons will continue to work, and we are back to square one with a vanilla flight simulator. True, it will have Orbx scenery, but what about the other addon developers who aren't interested in P3D, i.e. PMDG, Flight1, etc. Also, I actually own alot of Orbx scenery, and I would be unwilling to buy them again for a 64-Bit platform, as I don't see them offering a free-upgrade (I could be wrong though). The difference with X-Plane is that I would be willing to repurchase my scenery addons if they had packages for X-Plane. I can understand that this is a completely different platform, and I'd happily support companies who wish to do so.

With this attitude and their future plans, Orbx have lost a good customer. I'll put my faith in some of the talented developers such as Truscenery, Aerosoft, etc to move X-Plane forward. If in 2 years time X-Plane doesn't cut it, then someone else will come along to fill in the gap (e.g. Icarus). I strongly believe they've shot theirselves in the foot by only getting into bed with Lockheed Martin

Well...I can't say I am surprised at John Venema's comment about X-plane. His thoughts on the subject are very well known. He's made it perfectly clear what he thinks about X-plane. It's not much different to the article he did for Aerosoft awhile back:

http://asn.aerosoft.com/?page_id=6320

John Venema: "X-Plane has no future. It’s not a good sim, nor does it have a large enough customer base to make it worth our while. It performs really poorly on hardware with settings maxxed out, unlike FSX which now screams along with new Intel and nVidia hardware."

I'd love to know what John's computer specs are. I'm building a new computer soon (that is if the wife gives in) and would like to know how I can get my copy of FSX to "scream" along like his does.

P3D 2.0 sounds interesting though.

LOL.... I just build the biggest baddest I could for FSX, and it is all but screamming along with everything maxed out...!

but then again..... I have always taking what JV said with a pinch of salt.. Seems that some love to hear their own voices just a little too much for my liking anyway, but when you have a flock of sheep following the herder then all's good... :Peace:

It's fine having 64-bit but LR need to put on hold the flight model for v10 and stop tweaking it ad infinitum.

Instead concentrate on getting all the stuff that people want (stuff that FSX has and XP hasn't).

That would have the double benefit of encouraging 3PDs to create more planes in a stable environment, and attracting FSX users over once those features are working to a satisfactory level (your ATC does NOT rock Austin!). ;)

I guess a lot of us are shouting ourselves hoarse here at AVSim, but LR needs to prioritise or XP will still be a minority sim in 5 years.

The problem X-Plane faces is that at the moment it has a very poor on ramp for new users to come over from FSX.

  • I haven't seen any freeware for it that approaches the levels of quality reached in the heyday of FS2004. Good freeware is the spring board to payware.

  • I find the forums at http://forums.x-plane.org/ to be less than friendly. I've been reprimanded and even suspended for asking good questions in the wrong area. No warning, just "poof" and a threatening letter advising me to ponder the gravity of my infraction for a while. Really? I mod for one of if not the most well known addon publisher for FS and find it much easier to move a post to the appropriate area and give a simple instruction on what they did wrong and how to avoid future mistakes followed up with a friendly "Thank you!" Seems http://forums.x-plane.org/ mods would rather tell people to "#$%^ off" and give them an excuse to stay away, I guess it makes their jobs easier. Well guess what, moderating forums is CUSTOMER SERVICE WORK that helps sustain and grow the customer base.

... and now that I have dredged up all my old hostilities, my resolve to not purchase or play X-Plane 10 has been reinforced.

@LawnDartLeo

I agree about the x-plane.org forum, and I avoid that place. It really does give x-plane a bad name and I think it does more damage than good for new users. AFAIK x-plane.org is not actually officially a Laminar Research forum, they just use the name.

But the good freeware is there, and that's where the connection between his two issues is. But x-pilot.com will catch up eventually.

It's also worth knowing that most FS2004 scenery can be converted to X-Plane quite easily using fs2xplane. Although, it does require some work on the user's part.

I've also been banned from x-plane.org, so I hate knowing that most of the scenery is hosted there. There are ways round it, e.g. Using a proxy, but tbh, I can't be bothered most of the time.

Very well said, hit the nail directly on the head. Is anyone listening?

Not to toot my own thread, but as long as I have this, I won't require Orbx's services for X-Plane anyway. B)
