Sim City 5

One thing I've noticed on the various fora I've read is most of the people complaining don't have the game.

Yup

If there was a demo sure but $80 for a game with very poor reviews? No thanks.

Well if you look at the comments in this thread I get the impression that everyone who actually has the game rather enjoys it. The only valid complaint is the city size as the server issues are mostly taken care of.

All those bad reviews on Amazon are angry internet trolls who were upset (rightfully) that they couldn't play the game right away. That's pretty much resolved. I love the game and have found myself slacking on doing actual work lately because I have been playing it so much.

It is a shame that there's not a solution for people with poor internet connections, but since that's not me, I have no complaints.

Also...I paid $60 and got a 20 dollar rebate from Amazon - why are some people having to pay $80?

Then i learnt about the "pay to play" model

This isn't pay to play. You buy the game and play it. Maybe there will be expansions later or whatever, but only if you want to pay for them.

$60 at Amazon and $55 at Greenman, and as for the reviews the most negative ones are not really about the game at all but about EA's servers, which at release was obviously horribly underdimensioned. Wait a few days until the server issues have been resolved and then read reviews of the actual game.

If you buy it directly from Origin it's about $80.

I wasn't referring to Sim City with this, i was talking about the new command and conquer generals game being "Pay to Win".

Wonder why a boxed copy is already selling for $55 when digital download (the cheapest way to distribute) is firm at $80. They are good at maximizing profits from the ones willing to download out of convinience.

My situation is different as boxed copies haven't reached the South Pacific yet so my only choice at this time is digital download.

I would guess that it's the download is only from EA, whereas Amazon et-al buying in bulk pass some of the discount onto the customer.  It's a terrible model for the customer we are in an era (computer software wise) of manufactured scarcity.

Tried it and decided not to buy it because of the online issue - had several connection failures during play. Looked like a great game, but I don't spend money on companies striving to be overly clever and create obstacles for their customers.

At-least EA have accepted they messed up, and are offering a free EA game (digitally downloaded) as an apology for the server issues.

EA was warned over and over again from fans and gaming insiders that they were taking the wrong path... Too late now for excuses.

I agree, in an effort to prevent piracy, what is happening is they are inconveniencing their own customer base.

I just want to buy a DVD, install it and play it. Most months I go over my internet usage so am in a black-out for the last 5 days or so of the month, so won't be able to play in that time when game playing is essential due to not having Internet and looking for other things to do.....That is when I play Farm Simulator 2013 and FSX the most

It's the same with Steam. I recently bought Tomb Raider (stupid as I am). It's €45 on Steam but only about €32 for the boxed version at the swedish store I order from. Also a while back Steam decided for their own convenience that $ = € so all games on Steam cost more for us europeans. Not 100% sure that's still the case though. I never buy any full-price games directly from Steam.

Me too, and there are many occations when Internet is not available when I travel and have my laptop with me.

Looks like they still sell stuff in this industry, but I am one loyal customer that the media industry has now lost because of all their crap. I have accumulated a huge LP, CD and DVD collection over the years (7000+ titles) but with increasing use of copy protection they lost me. Spending 5 minutes getting a Blu-Ray movie to play, or not being able to rip a CD to my digital music library made me find another hobby.

It is in fact easier and more convenient to use the pirated version of most things these days, so why would I continue supporting these companies? Instead of spending their money on lawyers and clever copy protections they should concentrate on making better products that people are willing to pay for.

This is true, Can't play Sim City 5 at 35,000 feet when traveling and the cost of broadband at the Hilton is astronomical, so would be impossible to play when traveling. :(

I bought it for me and my wife today. Seems to be working ok. We play it together on the laptops while watching TV etc. I wish it wasn't always online but that doesn't bother me much anymore. All though I don't like being presumed a criminal before hand.

Oh sorry - I hadn't even heard of a new C&C game. Aside from the pay thing, does it look any good? The last few were horrible to me.

Farm Simulator 2013

I actually used to play Sim Farm... lol
