If everyone did like you, there would be no pirated movie for you to download because it's people like me that pay for stuff that gives companys money to make those movies.. <_<

Thank god there is honest people out there or no one would have any products at all to enjoy. -_-

So sorry you get no sympathy from me just because your issue with having to watch a short copyright infringment text on a movie you bought, can't really see why that ruins your expirience with a movie.

And about all this DRM stuff, why do we blame companys, If it hadn't been for pirates we wouldnt have it in the first place. So I blame the pirates instead of blaming the companys from trying to protect their products.

I would be just fine if there was noe more movies to watch or music to hear. There's always the classics to revisit. But that is unlikely to ever happen. The industry is pumping us full of white lies to make us feel bad because of piracy, but in reality their business is booming.

The record industry for instance had it's peak in 1978, and album sales never recovered to the status it had in the 1970s. They were on a downhill slope long before Internet piracy became a problem. Instead of embracing the Internet and it's efficient way of distributing their products they fought it, ###### of customers and managed to save some scraps because of Steve Jobs and iTunes.

SONY, owning one of the biggest record and movie companies in the world, has made billions selling devices and media tailored towards copying music and movies. But to them it doesn't really matter, because the fact of the matter is that revenue comes from other sources like product placement and branding of stars (that is a billion dollar industry selling fashion, magazines, TV-Shows etc).

Sure piracy is wrong, but as someone who has spent much of his life's earnings supporting the media industry I get ###### off when they ruin my experience. I am far from alone and made a large network of likeminded colelctors of movies and music back when I was active. Most of these people have now quit collecting because of all the crap the industry forces upon loyal customers. If the industry don't care for people buying 500-1000 titles a year, then so be it. There is plenty of other things to spend money on and have fun with in this life.

As for piracy it is not something the entire industry fights. There are plenty of musicians and movie people that have no problem with it. They are all for the exposure it gives them.

FSX addon makers are following suit and I have stopped buying most addons. It's a consumer choice. I want a piece of software that installs in a flash and don't rely on some online authentication that suddenly is gone when someone goes bust leaving my purchase worthless and unusable.

After posting that I don't mind about DRM I fired up SimCity... only to find out the servers are offline and I can't play the game at ALL...!!! There goes my sunday afternoon... DRM SUCKS!!! B)

EDIT

After a few minutes I was able to get online... and after two minutes I got a CTD... Shoot...

EDIT 2

This is getting annoying... After my CTD I restarted SimCity and I got a message the servers are busy and my next login attempt will be in... 55 minutes!!! #####!!!

Forget everything I said about the game being good: this of course is intolerable!!! I payed for the *#&%^$*@#^ game!!! What a crap system this is!!!

Wait for hack folks if you paid for it its yours so if somone cracks the drm and online BS then you shouldn't feel bad about using the hack since all it is is a mod.

If EA find out though, they will release patches and the hack/mod will be completely obliterated!

And it'll get hacked again its a never ending cycle I install a hack.and don't update my game unless it is seriously broke

DRM doesn't (attempt to) stop piracy. It encourages it. This is why I will never buy a downloadable game, except on Steam.

That's a bit like saying that banks are encouraging robberies by locking up the money and that it's their own fault when it happens. And you don't believe DRM helps? It does. It's a huge difference between having a game on torrent sites a week after release and having it there the day after release. Publishers do their research and if they had reason to believe that DRM hurts sales more than piracy they wouldn't have it.

The ratings for SimCity on Amazon are incredible. More than 1,500 1 star reviews for the game.

Just goes to show how utterly childish the gaming community is. No wonder gamers doesn't really get any respect from the publishers.

Assuming that EA are telling the whole truth, this could actually be very difficult to hack / crack.  They have made it public that the back end of the game is partially server based somewhat like an MMO.

I was a huge Sim City fan but for this one I might wait for it to hit the bargain bins. One day it will sell for $9.99 and that is when I will buy it.

That will be when they turn the servers off and you won't be allowed to play.

Do you think that if everyone on Amazon rated the game 5 * then wrote that it wouldn't work EA would listen? Look at the press for that game.. Just Google SimCity 5 and you'll see.

That will be when they turn the servers off and you won't be allowed to play.

Or, when they realize that DRM technology ruined a franchise and remove the always-online system.

I don't condone piracy, but I haven't purchased a DVD for years. Why should I be forced to watch "You wouldn't steal a car" and copyright information which I can't skip?. The sad truth is, it is 1000x more convenient to pirate stuff. I will happily give software developers and movie producers my money, but stop punishing me because I paid legally, when pirates get a better experience.

Especially in my country where everyone pirates everything, most TV serials don't have subtitles, but a guy speaking over the top of it to translate it, and I can't stand it. I openly admit that I download the torrents of my favorite TV shows. I don't have to watch 30 minutes of adverts after the show's opening credits, and more importantly I can watch it when I want (and not wait six months to a year for it to be shown here).

The only way companies like EA will learn, is to vote with your wallets. Simply don't buy it. It will serve them right when a cracked version appears in a few weeks on torrent sites. I've put money into that crowd-sourcing city builder instead (I'd rather give them $60, than fund that !#!@#@# company's deep pockets).

It's people that share the same way of thinking as you two that cause legit users to have to put up with DRM issues in the first place, so thanks so much! I hate being "inconvenienced" also, but it's because of people that think like you two and force the hand of those that produce items legit users want.

I came to this thread from being interested in SimCity, so thanks for the useful input, off to check it out.

Best, Michael

EA games have ruined this franchise. They also seem to have lied outright to people saying it had to be played online because it did processing for the glass engine on their servers. People are saying the game will continue to play 20 minutes or so without a connection (proving they are lying). They simply want to this be a another Sims 3. Forcing downloadable content down your neck, expensive upgrades, and constant reminders to Post To Facebook.

Wait till a flight simulator comes out that requires an always online connection and constant popups "Upgrade you Cessna's engine for only $49.99" or "You've just crashed, share with your friends and post to Facebook?".

Childish or not, people are angry that they bought the game and couldn't play it. Quite rightly they gave it 1 star.

A similar thing has just happened to me where I just bought a product for X-Plane, and was told on the website "After your purchase you will be given a download link immediately". What they failed to mention is that I have to email the company and ask for my serial for the software I just parted MY money for. So basically the product I bought to play with on a lazy Sunday, and I will now have to wait for someone to let me use the software I've just paid for. Again, punishing legitimate users. I could have just downloaded the software illegally, but I chose to support the developer, and got screwed over as usual.

Well it's a vicious circle, the more companies do this, the more people will be determined to crack it. It's nothing new, people used to pirate stuff before the Internet and will continue to do so. Plus, I didn't say I pirate games, I'd rather own a legitimate copy. I'll consider buying SimCity when the DRM and always online component has gone.

One of my favourite bands, Dream Theater, is a prime example of just going with the flow and accepting that the world is changing. Instead of going after bootleggers, they turn the material into an album and sell it themselves with a nice packaging. That is one clever way of turning a loss into a win-win situation for themselves and their fans. Other "corporate rockers" like KISS and Metallica choose to embarass themselves and their fans instead by going after them.

Downloading mp3s or movies from the Internet isn't much different than sharing cassette tapes back in the day. Software piracy has been there since the dawn of software. Sure there is revenue lost, but also gained, in other parts of the chain, and that is the core of the ongoing battle. Instead of criminalizing users the industry should take a long hard look at themselves. There is plenty of money being made from piracy by broadband providers, media and computer manufacturers, audio components and walkman manufactures, and the list goes on...

Not really. The choice is theirs, and some companies refrain from doing it. It seems that companies that are run by "MBA" type people love to hassle their customers. As long as people keep showeling money at them they will keep on doing it.

Yeah, but at some point you would get tired off the classics, then you would want new stuff to be made. But if no one was making profit, it would not get made. It would offcourse never happen as there are always honest people out there, but if everyone pirated it would happen. We don't live in a utopia where everyting is free, people have families to feed and can't just give their hard work away. And pirating things is stealing other peoples work no matter how we try to justify it. Offcourse all the DRM stuff and anti piracy measures irritates me sometimes too, but I just have to live with it.

E.g would you stop locking your doors so burglars just can walk right in to your house and steal stuff? People set up alarms in their house etc to protect themselfes, Is that wrong? Would you just invite the burglar into your home and say, hey man just take everything you want for free while I starve?. Offcourse all the locks and alarms wouldn't stop a dedicated burglar but it would give you a more sense of securety and help you sleep better at nights.

What are you talking about I paid for the game! But I don't want to have to be online all the time and deal with server issues or not beable to play when they shut the servers down in a few years dude chill out I buy my software but its ok to mod it its like buying a addon for fsx which I'm sure you use

Though it won't make much difference to some, read this news release:

Those of you that are on the near edge of advocating piracy take note; if it goes any further you will run up against our ToS' and if you read them, you will see that the response from us will be rather "direct".
