What's the big deal about wing flex?

Featured Replies

Every pre-release thread on developer forums have people asking if wing flex is modeled. Can someone explain what's so interesting about it? Aren't you too busy in the cockpit during takeoff and landing to even look at it?

Perhaps I'm not "getting it" and missing out on a realism aspect that provides authenticity and visual enjoyment. Please suggest some addons that model it well and tell me the best way to observe it. I would like to see what the fuss is about. Maybe I'll get hooked.

As long as wing flex looks normal it should be there. Aren't  there times when you want to look out the window?

People want the most realistic experience possible. Lots of stuff isn't strictly "necessary" but they enhance the experience.

I agree with the OP, however that's a personal thing. Like Oliver said every simmer is different, think about it this way, I spend 99% of my flying in the cockpit view, but I still prefer a well modeled exterior to a poorly modeled one, I shouldn't care but it does enhance your perception of the real world model into the sim, and this adds to realism even if you only notice it couple of times in all your simming hours.

Real world CPL holder.

I guess I'll have to check it out on some replays. I'm not dissing wing flex, just never really looked for it or thought about it and some folks get pretty adamant about it being there. I'm all for realism enhancements. Maybe an additional reason to buy EZDok. Yea...that's it. :P

For a free peak at the wing flex effect you might try a FSX compatible Project Airbus 380, 321, 320 or 319 and there is also the SkySpirit aka POSKY B747s and B767s, all have wing flex modeled. Find yourself some rough air and watch the show.

Eye candy, nothing more. Also, more than pointless on small aircraft.

And quite a beech to model.

In that case, paying for rides in a Level D simulator might just be the way to go.

OK, let's rephrase that........

No big deal, but if it's available I want it. It's a bit like asking why climb that mountain!

I don't care too much about it, but I understand if people want it! SOmetimes I enjoy the replay of a take-off or landing, and wingflex sure looks great then. But I don't understand the people asking for it the moment a new aircraft is announced in some forum, and on some planes it's simply unrealistc, and I guess it would look a bit strange. For example, I can't remember that I have noticed wing flex on the A32x, but I sure have on the 737.

In general, I think wingflex looks great on wide bodies, because they have huge wings and the effect is much more noticable.

If you want to see wingflex in action try flying the fsx stock glider and pulling up sharply from a dive.

Quite a lot of fsx YouTube vids have a window seat view with wing flex visible & back ground chatter , I personally really like it.
