"Oh!! Well, that's easy... Bandwith costs money. So by giving people an incentive to backup their files, PMDG can spend less money on hosting, and more on development (for example.)"

so can every other developer that produces top notch software, but they dont and this is fact

Thomas only a PMDG rep can confirm or deny. Im sure or at least hopeful they will clear it up

Well this is not aimed at anyone in particular, but I am hearing some self-entitlement in play here.

I was honestly looking for him as I was scrolling down and reading the previous comments.

As for the OP....

I think it's already been stated quite clearly. A downloadable installer is like having a DVD. If you fail to put it in it's case and it get scratched (ugh, cats....), it would be ridiculous to think that the company would send you a new one for free.

Instead of paying for the DVD itself, you're paying for the server that the product is being hosted on, the place where the server is being stored, the people maintaining that server as well as the bandwidth it costs PMDG to send the file back to you.

Isn't it like between $5 and $15? Seems like quite a bit for only $15. Especially when the product originally costs ~ 3 times that amount.

**Had to edit to clarify. I posted without doing a bit of research. Don't wanna fall into that hole....

The OP states he had to do this multiple times. After the first time, why wouldn't you back it up? I learned my lesson. It wasn't because of the cost that I learned my lesson. It was because i have a lot of payware and having to track it all down, get new downloads ( yes some companies give them for free but you still have to contact them). In this case it is 4.95 to purchase a 1 year back up. So how many times have you done it and years apart?

Unless I'm imagining things, it appears the OP has met the business end of the forum ban hammer, given that his account no longer exists. Nothing to see here, folks. Move along, please. :P

I've been backing up my installers and serial codes ever since I started buying downloaded products for FSX. Takes minutes these days! Having an FSX only USB or SD Card is not a bad idea at all.

I always thought a "backup" was an extra pistol tucked into an ankle holster. :Clown:

Good records and information management practices pay off in the long run. Every downloaded software I've bought since day one is backed up on CDs or DVDs and that practice has served me well (original installers along with copies of all emails connected to the purchases which contain critical information such as 'key / proof of purchase'). Copies of all printable information such as emails and other documents are also kept in hard-copy form filed in separate file folders (one folder per addon) as part of my 'home' filing system.

This requires a disciplined approach which is time consuming but well worth the effort.

I have not read all the posts in this thread but.. What I do is a complete acronis backup of all my hard drives once a week. I also save every download I have purchased. This saves sooo much time in case of hard drive failure without having to reinstall everything.

It's not true.  It's not like owning a DVD.  When you buy a PMDG product you are really buying a license.  It's like a rental really.  If you really owned it you could do what you want with it.

PMDG sells a premium product at a premium price.  If feelthere.com can give you a free redownload, PMDG should be able to also.  Just my opinion that maybe reflects more my relationship to money than anything else.

Same here. I keep both the acronis backup and downloads on a external HD. I learned my lesson the hard way.

How do you do a backup anyway? Is it just downloading twice, putting one of the .exe files, unzipped on a USB harddrive? Some people don't know how to do it. Maybe that's why they don't.

When I had to pay again I felt like I was shaken down. I'm not saying it's dishonest but I DO know how it made me feel. I guess when you're the best you can nickle-and-dime.

Ok, so i'm reading this and want to backup my installation to a memory stick.

Which files do i need to copy and how do i do it?

be more specific mate, are you trying to back up the installers for your addons? or backup your whole complete system?

The installers should be located in the "downloads" folder if you are using windows 7 by default. If you changed the location, then possibly in your 'my documents" folder. I have all my addons organized by the type of addon and company.. Soo all my flytampa are in their own folder, aerosoft in their own and so on. then just copy the main folder to your flash drive.

If you want to create a image backup of your computer and each individual hard drive then I would strongly suggest Norton ghost or what I use Acronis true Image. Worth every penny.
